Entering
production in December 1941, the Marder III is an interesting note to German
wartime production. It consisted of a PzKpfw 38 tank chassis, mated to captured
Russian anti-tank guns. Some of these were re-chambered to allow the use
of standard German rounds. By the time the Ardennes Offensive began, the
Marder had been modified to serve primarily as a self-propelled artillery
gun.
While
the Marder III is technically not a tank, it makes an effective presentation
as one. The 7.5cm cannon will pierce the armor of most Allied tanks. The
two drawbacks to using the Marder III are its fixed turret and open rear.
Both of which make the Marder III very susceptible to ambushes.
