Created
as a cheaper alternative to a main battle tank, the M10 Wolverine served
as Americas core tank destroyer. Based on the Sherman tank design, the M10's
most obvious differences were thinner armor and modified turret. In an effort
to save on cost, a traditional turret was substituted for an open top class.
It was also flattened to present a lower battlefield profile. However, this
configuration afforded Wolverine crews little or no protection from indirect
fire, such as artillery and mortar rounds. In an interesting footnote to
the M10's history, a report at the end of WWII called for the dismantling
of all tank destroyer units. It was the evaluator's view that future war
efforts would be better served by a main battle tank that could engage and
destroy the best tanks the enemy might offer.
The
M10 in combat can be a formidable weapon, if used with some care. Facing
off against a Panther G is still an act of the foolhardy. However, with
discretion the Wolverine can destroy all but the heaviest German tanks.
Engaging them from the flanks or rear is most effective. Not only is the
side and rear armor of a tank thinner, but a positional advantage allows
your gunner an added margin for error. If his first shot doesn't kill, he
has a descent chance of getting off a second, and hopefully lethal, round.
In August of 2004, Zappi, Homba, Bambam887, RedScorpion and MOOXE all pitched
in to create this Close Combat site. I would to thank all the people who have visited
and found this site to thier liking. I hope you had time to check out some
of the great Close Combat mods and our forums. I'd also like to thank
all the members of our volunteer staff that have helped over
the years, and all our users that contributed to this site!
