PostForum: The Mess   Posted: Mon Apr 09, 2012 5:43 pm   Subject: Matrix games a disservice to the CC community
After almost two decades of playing CC, I am saddened to see what this game has become at the hands of Matrix Games.

Shoddy releases marred by poor choices in gameplay changes, bad modifications of AI behavior, buggy maps with LOS weirdness.

The principle behind the CC revival Matrix had planned was sound, but by doing it on the cheap they created the reverse of a revival, they lowered the quality of the overall CC family of games and made introducing new people to CC impossible.

Gameranger was a huge disappointment, I tried to hook up my friends to play these new CC games and it just wouldnt work, and I tried every patch and network trick etc.. what a waste of time. Poor implementation poor support and shoddy network code.

I now haven't played CC in a year, and I blame Matrix for it. I hope Slitherine does not make the same mistake and try to make CC sequels on the cheap by unqualified designers. Create new content, do not change the combat system or the AI from the originals. Dont be foolish enough to think you can improve upon CC V's AI and simulation level.

Thanks to those wonderful modders who made amazing stuff far better than what Matrix can produce, Berlin mod, Okinawa, Meuse, Stalingrad the Cauldron, Scheldt, Bloody Omaha, etc..

And thanks to Mooxe for keeping the CC torch burning bright.

I wish a real game company would come along and truly revive tactical gaming.

Rant off

Personally I dont like Matrix games, they are stuck in the past with all these turned based hex wargames that they churn out. Wargames are a niche because people like David (CEO of Matrix) are still stuck in this mentality. If you want to play a real wargame get a copy of Highway to the Reich or even better Conquest of the Aegean by Panther Games, trully something NEW and an excellent recreation of operational level WWII combat.

Destineer really dropped the ball with their "interpretation" of Close Combat, FTF. What a waste of time that was. To think I almost took a job there, dodged that bullet!
If Matrix wanted to trully own the strategy game genre, they should stop screwing around , lay our some cash and get a professional team to make a really new Close Combat game, not these mods that are passed off as full version games. DAVE IF YOU ARE READING THIS STOP SCREWING AROUND AND SPEND A GOOD AMOUNT ON A VIRTUAL TEAM AND MAKE A RELEASE WORTHY OF A FULL PRICED GAME! I know you work out of your house and the whole company is virtual, but seriously, get some balls and take a chance.

The modding community is putting you to shame, they create entirely new subjects and release it for free meanwhile you are just releasing the same game with a few extra features and some new graphics, and charge full price. Get serious.

I am glad that people are interested in developing professional level re-releases of CC. CCIV was picked probably because it was an SSI game and therefore an available license, meanwhile CC5 is still owned by microsoft so no one can touch the code for a commercial re-release. I am a die hard fan of CC and a HUGE fan of the modding community which has done more for my enjoyment of this game for free than all the professional releases put together. Its an incredible thing to be still playing a game that is over 10 years old, but thats the strength of PC games for you.

I did not buy WaR because, I have already played that game. Sure its got lots of enhancements, very good ones, BUT its still a CCIV mod. For a full priced game I expect something completely new as a setting. If you had put it in any other setting (Borneo, Solomons, Abyssian Campaign, Italy, Crimea, there are hundreds of operations in WWII that are far more interesting and deserving than the Bulge). I realize this means lots more money and greater risk, but thats how you make money in this industry, and I know because I work in this industry.

I see WaR as a missed opportunity to really add a new CC game to the mix and re-invigorate the genre.

I think you may be right, I dont see how the russians are going to have any troops left after another 10 days. I am a little dissapointed, I was hoping to get the "desperate hopeless defense" feeling from this mod, the AI just has no clue to how to build an attack. I am sure its even worse in defense.

I noticed that the KV-II could be destroyed by a 42 cm cannon from the rear. I dont think this would have been possible in real life.

Lots of the mods are great for their historical accuracy, but there are some cases where tank armour penetration data is a little fuzzy.

Thanks Smile To be fair, the ai is pretty stupid, mass waves rushing into machinegunfire, tanks blundering through towns, but this might be realistic Wink

I have been playing Circle for months now, I am just starting the second half of the 18th, and already the russians are showing signs of running out of men. One battle group has been completely destroyed in the north, except for 2 snipers, and a second in stalingrad proper is down mostly machinegun teams. I have killed nearly 10 000 russians with same amount WIA, with another 200 tanks destroyed. I have lost 5000 men in total, half killed. Have I broken the mod?

This is pretty sad Pzt, i used to be a member of Pzt and though you guys were ok. This thread, and your dishonorable behaviour in that Clan war, is changing my view about you.

I played in that war, and as far as I could see it Pzt was more and more awol as the game turned against them. I know Bjorn and he is always active, always hanging out on Gamespy and is not hard to find. The way I see it pzt just started fading away as things turned sour.

I am looking forward to this mod very much, it sounds like its going to be very good. I would make a small suggestion though.

Please dont follow the trend that was set by GJS and then replicated by Stalingrad: leave the fighting tactical AI intact from the original games. Recent mods have disabled or reduced the behaviour that made the game realistic, that is teams engaging on their own initiative when presented with a target in their fire arc while on defensive mode. I am not sure what they did to change this but it amounts to situations like tanks/infantry not firing at targets right in front of them in the open. The game was not designed to play like a RTS, you shouldnt be running around clicking on fire orders for everyone, you should be losing men and equipment because you didnt pay attention enough to give a fire order, you shouldnt be swept off the map because someone is faster with the mouse, so I urge you to avoid the same mistake that GJS and Stalingrad modders made.

Walking Dead: The high ranking squad leader in your command squad, usually a leutenant or captain, that always gets killed instantly the minute the squad encounters any fire.

Sole Survivor Deathmarch: The practice of sending a squad that has only 1 or 2 survivors straight towards an objective. These survivors are usually suddenly immune to all the fire you can pour on them, and the soak up a ton of fire before finally dying (if at all), by then you have exposed all of your hidden positions.

Promotion Fishing: The practice of choosing their teams from the manpower pool and throwing back any team that has a low ranking leader, then reselecting the same team type over and over until they get a higher ranking squad. The idea is to maximize the ranks of all squads, while wasting your opponents time.

Thats not correct, the operation in crete was a disaster for the german airborne from a casualty perspective, and Hitler was appalled, but he didnt forbid airborne operations. There were several german jump operations after 1940, but not on the same scale and unsupported. The germans never performed a divisional jump after 1940, but there were several battalion level jumps in Russia, and even one during the battle of the buldge.

Which mod would you like to use?

I would suggest Meuse mod to start with. The latest version seems to have fixed a few problems.

What do you think? Suggestions are of course welcome.

I look forward to the pleasure of fighting PZT some day in a clan war. However I would not choose GJS as the mod.

I must congratulate the Mod team for the Berlin mod. This is an absolutely superb modification and brilliant depiction of this fascinating battle. When I first saw the discussions from the development team I thought this was going to be totally mismodelled, and was actually doing research to create my own Berlin mod. After playing this I stand corrected, the research, modelling accuracy and map making is supeb, if it wasnt for the multiplayer problems and the turret art bug, this would be a professional quality product.

I just wanted to offer my sincerest thanks and appreciation to the development team. Take a bow.
