Been a long time since I've been to this website or even played Close Combat. I've been playing World of Tanks for the past year and really enjoy the game, however I do miss playing Close Combat. Is this game still active?
Are there any former AA members still around?

MMCCIIIMultiplayer.cc3 is for the MMCCIII program for muti-player. Which means you do have a plugins folder to access, which also means you don't have any other plugin available in that folder.
Skip step 5 as this may not be working properly for you.
- Make sure that you have extracted the mod plugin file from the zip file into the plugin folder.
- You can manual check the plugin folder to ensure that the file extracted properly by using Windows Explorer and going to the plugins location.
If you see you mod located in the plugins folder then with ModSwap open, click file File>Install and then the mod you want installed.
Hopefully this will work for you. If not LMK. |

Just purchased the Close Combat Cross of Iron game (Repackaged CCIII) and would like to know how to install the various mods...specifically the Grossdeutschland mod. The download page says there are directions in a read me file but hell if I can see it in any of the downloads. Thanks much in advance.
|
STEP 1) Download the mod you wish to install to your computer
- Almost 99% of mods come in a zipfile. with in each zip file is the plugin file.
STEP 2) Extract (unzip) the plugin file to this directory: C:\Program Files\Close Combat\plugins
STEP 3) If a mod requires maps (which most do) then you must download the map files or the map pack which contains all the maps required. Extract the map pack or map zip files to: C:\Program Files\Close Combat\Close Combat III\Maps
STEP 4) Once the plugin and all necessary map files are extracted to the proper folder locations then open up the MOD SWAP utility: C:\Program Files\Close Combat\CCModSwap.EXE
STEP 5) With ModSwap open, click on CC3. All mods you have available will be displayed in the white box. Highlight the mod you wish to install. The click File>Install The mod will then install. Close ModSwap and launch game.
Presto. |

I really like the concept. I dont think the concept is delivered all that well though graphically and in the interface. Myself and Cavscout just played a game somewhere in Russia. We really could of used a chat option within MMCC3. We used Gamespy to find each other and actually set the game up. One other annoying thing was his IP was displayed in an area where it cannot be copy and pasted. Annoying, but simple to work through.
From my 5 or so games vs AI and 1 vs Cavscout there are a few changes I'd like to see one day to really get me hooked...
- Hosters IP sent to clipboard (Like CC2 at BHQ) or MMCC3 launches game automatically
- Ability to see what server your on
- Chat interface
- Updated map of the area
- Resizable viewing window
- Ability to see whos online (not just amounts)
- Player stats
- Option to switch servers quickly
- Option to see which server is busiest
- Option to query server from a website to get stats and info
Currently theres no ownership in a campaign. If you lose a key map, who cares, nobody will know, nobody will see stats about it. If these type of stats were shown to the community it would definetly increase the interest and ownership a player has in the overall picture.
For us CC5 guys MMCC3 is a good time spender while we sit in GameSpy and wait for opponents.

So how do we go about getting this stuff all done Mooxe? I am all for it!
And when do we have our next match! |

This discussion is senseless and really uncalled for.
For one, there have been several other cases of someone modding someone else's mod for the betterment of the game or just to make it more fun (BlackCats rank mods for example). And I have yet to see anyone blast them for it.
I understand you put years of hardwork into this mod, and to that we salute you. It is the modders that continue to keep this game and community alive. Let's just not be quick to cut down other modders (whether it is their own or someone else's) work as it adds to the viability and continuation of a great game.
@ Salhexe,
I see no harm or foul in what you did, as their were others who have done the same before you. However, asking for permission could have avoided some of the flak you are receiving.
Let this stuff rest, and get back into the game! |

Forum: Close Combat 5: Invasion Normandy Posted: Sun Dec 03, 2006 5:11 pm Subject: HOW TO GUIDE: Playing CC5 online at GameSpy Arcade |
Here is a simple "how to" for those of you who are new to multi-player and wish to play CC5 online agaisnt another opponent.
STEP 1. Download the plan that fits your needs and budget. Remember, if you choose the basic (free) plan then you will have to deal with advertisements from time to time.
NOTE: What you are downloading is software that installs onto your computer. Most anti-virus/spyware programs will detect this as a form of adware or spyware. Do not delete any registry files or other files that come up during the scan that pertain to GameSpy arcade - otherwise you will experience problems later.
STEP 2. Read through the entire "Arcade walkthrough."
This will teach you everything you need to know about GameSpy arcade and setting it up.
If you still are having problems with GameSpy, here is a good FAQ section that answers the most common issues.
Step 3. Join the Close Combat 5 mutiplayer lobby.
This is explained in the walkthrough.
Step 4. Test your new installation of GameSpy Arcade with another player. (Make sure to have the same type of game/mod version as the other player you are connecting with)
Many players often find that they cannot join or host games because of firewall, router or security problems.
If you discover during your test run that you can't join or host a game, then refer to the FAQ section list above. In most cases you just need to turn on some ports on your router.
Step 5. Play!
If your test run was a success, you can now play for fun. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Things to remember while in CC5 GameSpy lobby.
1) Just because you see a players name, it doesn't mean they are in the lobby. Many players will leave GameSpy up on they're computers while they are away. The best thing is to send them a private message and wait for a reply.
2) ADVERTISE! If you want a game with someone, then open up a room and advertise for what type of game you would like. A lot of players will jump onto GameSpy for a quick peek to see if there are any rooms up, and if not they leave. Just because you have a room up doesn't mean you have to host. All that can be decided after you find an opponent.
3) Be helpful to new players. Send them here to CCS if they need a lot of help or information.
If you still need help or have a question, feel free to post a reply or send me a private message.

1. Yup. It does indeed say "download GameSpy and play online". But it does'nt say that you need one of the original disks to do this.
2. How is a newbie to know that you can't play CC on the CCS site? The process of needing the original disks and playing via GameSpy is not clearly explained anywhere. As for "of course you need the original disks" well, today a lot of games can be downloaded from their sites, usually but not invariably in exchange for a fee.
3. If the site was set up to attract new users I don't think it's succeeding very well. This view is supported by the apparent lack of new CC players using the site. If you want to attract new players I suggest you need to explain more clearly what CC is,and "holding a person's hand to get the game running" is precisely what the site should be doing.
Also there is no need to be rude. I have the basic skills of installing (and uninstalling) games and navigating websites and have been doing this for many years. My browser works well, thank you. And I can spell "rudimentary"
You seem very complacent about the site. It really does'nt work very well for newcomers, which may explain why it's not achieving it's objective.

Wavell,
Have you not been online enough to understand the concept of a fansite, and the difference between a fansite and a player-matching site like GameSpy? CCS is a fansite, which means fans of the Close Combat series of games can come and chat about the game, learn about new (and past) developments of the game (like modding), find other information, stories, news as well as download patches, mods, tools and other things directly realted to the game. GameSpy on the other hand, is a player-matching site which allows you to connect with other players through the use of their software to play an online multi-player game. Every PC game out there has fansites, official websites, and tools and tips sites. And for every game that has multi-player capability, there is a site/place to go to hook up for a game. MSN Zone and GameSpy Arcade are examples of large player-matching sites.

I played CC3 and CC5 many years ago, when the games were new. I'd be quite interested in playing CC again, but the CCS site does not make it clear, to me at any rate, how to do this.
|
Did you purchase these games in the original box? If so, they came with a manual and explained how to connect with other players online. There is a manual available to download from this site if you did not purchase it in the original box. This is an old game so things have changed a bit from its origial release. The manual directs users to MSN Zone which no longer supports any of the Close Combat games. GameSpy is basically the only player-matching site that supports CC, aside from Battle HQ.

Do I need to have the original disks to play others on the CCS site?
|
You only need the original disk if you plan to play the game in it's original form (unmodded). If you have the game still installed on your hard drive, you can download any of the mods and be able to play without the disk.

How do I manage to find opponents on the CCS site? None of this is clear to me, although I've played many other games over the net without these difficulties.
|
As I stated above, this is a fansite. You cannot play anyone directly from this site. You need to do this on a player-matching site, in which most of us use GameSpy to hook up to play. So if your are interested in player multi-player, I would suggest going to GameSpy and downloading their software that will allow you to meet up with fellow CC gamers. Otherwise make a post stating you want to play someone, what times are good for you, and leave your MSN, AIM or other instant messanger address so they can contact you for a game.

Overall I don't think the CCS site is friendly to new users.

I have been a CC player/veteran for many years, and this has been by far one of the best sites to come along for a game this old. I feel that this site is a very newbie-friendly site and is well maintained for a fansite ran by a couple of CC players who do this in their spare time and from money out of their own pocket. The amount of information and resources available here for Close Combat is just astonishing. And if you can't find what you are looking for, there are more than enough members who can point you in the right direction - you just have to ask the questions in the right manner.
Hopefully I've made this make more sense to you, and you can go from being a register user to being a member of the Close Combat community. |

It all depends on the circumstance.
Do you have problems conecting to GameSpy?
Can you connect to GameSpy, but just can't host or join Close Combat games?
What kind of connection do you have? Modem, Cable, DSL?
What exactly isn't working for you with GameSpy?
And yes GameSpy is the best place to find other players to play Stalingrad and other CC5 games. |
