Topic: Replace Zeppo Config Manager with JSGME or OvGME

PostForum: Modding Workshop   Posted: Wed Aug 28, 2019 11:44 am   Subject: Replace Zeppo Config Manager with JSGME or OvGME
After the release on GOG I've bought CC2 and played it again after 20 years. I've started playing the mods hosted in CCS, most of them worked without issues except the ones that had a modified .exe that asked for a CD that you don't have with the GOG version, so I've hex edited the exe to work with the GOG versions.
Another issue was the Zeppo Config Manager, that worked but even in this case the CD was required to restore the original files of most plugins installed so I have to constantly backup manually the installation folder. I was thinking about creating something to manage mods and I've discovered JSGME and I've converted all the CC2 Mods on the download section to work with JSGME and patching the exes when required. Then I've discovered another Mod Manager called OvGME and is even better than JSGME and repacked all the mods to work for OvGME.

So to summarize:

Zeppo Config Manager:
- issues with some GOG versions
- needs CD to restore original files
- plugins are packed in a way that requires time to convert them

JSGME:
- mods are packed in a way that even without JSGME you could use them without issues
- you can enable multiple mods at once and the software reminds you of any conflicts
- the game folder is backed up and when you disable a mod the files are restored
- you can save and recall group of mods enabled

OvGME
- has all the advantages of JSGME
- loads mods from zip files, so allows you to save space
- allows modders to host repositories to download mods from and keep them updated

I've done all this to enjoy the old mods but I would like to share my work with all the community, I'm looking for a free web host to upload all the files but I'm having issues because OvGME requires you to upload all the files on HTTP links, doesn't support HTTPS otherwise I would have used one of the various cloud services, if mooxe agrees I would be happy to upload the files here.

If anyone is interested I think that converting the mods could give you more fuel to the CC community, particularly by making it easier for new players coming from GOG to enjoy mods in the game that they have bought and to make them usable in the future even if OvGME or JSGME become obsolete.

I've checked the registry path used by zeppo:
http://www.closecombatseries.net/CCS/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=81

Mine is exactly where expected, and in fact Zeppo is working. What is your issue with CC2 registry entries?

Regarding using daemon tools is fine if you have bought the games when they were sold in CD format, but for someone that buys a GOG version is asking to buy a used copy of the game to play some mods or to look around for ISOs of the game, I think having the mod that works directly without CD check is definitely easier and better

Being as CC2 through CC5 are available on GOG now, and run perfectfly fine on the new operating systems, might be a good idea to edit the .exe for the mods that are using an older .exe. It would make those mods compatible with the GOG, and part of the reason why I didn't play some of them when I picked up CC5 on GOG.

EDIT: Thought we were talking about CC5. Musta forgot it was in the CC2 section.

Actually..  You would be wrong.. the problem why the GOG versions have issues with installing mods has nothng to do with the GOG modded exe but has everything to do with the registry entry the gog version writes and the value that zeppo's config manager looks at..

I don't know for the other CC versions, but for CC2 I've used Zeppo's Config manager on two mods without particular issues, I was at a dead end with all the mods that modified the .exe because they asked for a CD that you don't own...

You’ll have to grab a copy of your own. It’d be illegal to give you a copy of the GOG exe.

I was talking about the exe of the game, not the installer, only with the exe and without the other files you can't do anything, otherwise even the exe inside the mods would be illegal, but if is not a legit thing nevermind

I don't have CC5 but I can try to convert them if you give me the exe, I'll convert the CC2 mods with modified exe and ask to mooxe to upload them in the downloads section.

I need the GOG exe and the original exe of the game so I can patch the mod

Problem solved! I've missed one byte before these values, now it works like a charm!

PostForum: Close Combat 2: A Bridge Too Far   Posted: Tue Aug 06, 2019 5:16 pm   Subject: Running mods with modified exe such as Afrika mod
I was trying to play mods such as Afrika and Krete, but I can't start them because I get an error regarding a missing CD.

I've tried an Hex comparison between the GOG and the originale CC2 exes, found only little differences in adjacent bytes and I guessed that this was the no CD part changed by GOG, I've copied these bytes from the GOG exe to the Afrika one but nothing changed, always an error regarding CD... Someone has an idea about how getting it to work?

Hello, I've created a better WSI file for PortingKit, I've included some files to avoid manual tweaking of the registry and to set a custom resolution to run the game that is forced at game start without having to change it manually in the registry every time that you adjust the game speed:
Close Combat 2.wsi

Added even a Trailer video for the game and an in depth description to make it work.

Could you test it and let me know if it works?

If I remember right I've used an easier solution:

after the installation if you select the Close Combat 2.app and press Cmd + Down it will open a menù, go in the Tools Tab > Registry Editor and find this path:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft Games\Close Combat\2.00

Here find the option PlayVideos and set it to 0 and everything should work.

P.S.: If you want to adapt the screen resolution change ScreenX and ScreenY to the resolution that you wish, remember that if you change even the speed in the F8 menu ScreenX and ScreenY must be changed before the next start.

I don't remember exactly the settings because I've done it a while ago, but I've exported the wsi2 file for the porting kit to recreate it on your systemClose Combat 2 Porting Kit file
Let me know if it works

Hello, I have an account on GameRanger, but often aren't any servers available, so about a year ago I've created a Discord Server to easily organise online matches even from the phone by having available a list of interested people, right now there are more than 30 users subscribed and I think it could be a more useful way than GameRanger to organise online games, if you are interested this is the link Discord Server for Close Combat Players

Commonly I use Google Slides, it can be used instead of PowerPoint even for this task? The military simbols are included or you have a website where I can found them

Can I suggest to EagleEye to go in "preferences", "elements terrain table", and check if there is selected the CC2 terrain elements file? He can also search it (with "search" button) inside the tool folder named "TerrainElementsTable" to confirm that it's loaded correctly.
It seems to me to remember that once I didn't see the trees because terrain file and terrain elements file were not selected for the same CC version (or maybe terrain elements file was not selected/loaded at all).

Thank you very much! It worked! I've already went inside the preferences and the file inside the archive was selected, had to point to the path manually and now the trees are there, thanks to everyone for the help!

Hi EagleEye,

AFAIR the 5CC will remember the last used Terrain file. Perhaps this is gone in your case and you will see no trees therefore? So select a new Terrain file via: Menubar: Edit > Select tree image overlay > Button "Load file "Terrain". You wrote you did it this way, what is okay.

Now check your selection: below this button there also a line labeled "file path". There you will find the path of the actually loaded Terrain file. Just stay with the mouse over the text of this path and a tooltip will appear, showing the full path of Terrain file. So you can control which file you have really loaded.

If this file is missing on next start of 5CC, 5CC should ask for "a sprite file to load". In this dialog you can also select the disked Terrain file.

Next problem what might appear: you are using an unusual or empty terrain elements file (or perhaps no terrain elements file at all?) with no trees defined inside? In this case you will see also no trees.

I hope this helps a little bit, otherwise I must dug out my own old manual first.

Just made a test with old 5CC v1.17 on MacOS-X 10.14 and it works.

Cheers
Mafi

Thanks for the answer, I am loading the Terrain file inside the Graphics folder inside CC2, in game I see the trees so I suppose that the trees should be inside the file. I've checked multiple times insied the "edit tree image overlay" screen and the path is right and there is written the number of sprites loaded, but still the same issue, no trees. I can't try to open other CC maps because I don't have other games installed and so I can't have the Terrain file. Which CC version have you tested on Mac? It could be useful to try all this with the terrain file that you have used to test?

Tried other maps from the mod section and the issue is always the same... No trees shown, even with user maps, the layer stays empty even if the terrain file is loaded correctly. On 3 different computers the issue is the same, so or I am doing something really stupid or the issue is the god version

I have used the terrain file inside the CC folder there are two files named in the same way, I've tried both of them but the result is the same, today I will try to download some maps of CC2 to see if I have the same issue
