I agree wholeheartedly on Close Combat being the best purchase ever. In fact, I have not played other games much at all since 2000.

Thank you, Southern_land, for all the maps that you created. You created a monumental body of work. You are a true artist.

So, you leaving means that you won't be teaching your grandkids how to play this game?

Best,

Pete

Release Notes:

The Dieppe Raid - a mod for Close Combat Gateway to Caen. Version 1.0.

Little known to the general public who, particularly in this day and age, do not tend to dwell on events of times long past, is Operation Jubilee, the Allied raid on the small French seaport of Dieppe. "Jubilee" took place on 19th August 1942 and was designed as a divisional raid on a fortified enemy coastal town. It proved to be a dreadful failure as it was poorly designed with insufficient understanding of the German defenses, the nature of the terrain and the capabilities of own troops. The result was a huge loss of manpower for only a few tasks accomplished. Because of this monumental failure, the raid has been the subject of many post-war studies.
Creating a mod is a kind of study in itself. To reconstruct the event, we used original aerial photographs to model the terrain and defenses, original reports from both Allies and Germans and some of the post-war literature.

We found some of the differences in strengths remarkable. Blue Beach, at Puits, was defended by only a platoon of infantry and assaulted by a Canadian force of battallion strength. Green Beach was similarly defended only by platoons and attacked by two battallions. Twenty-nine heavy tanks landed in front of Dieppe and they could not make the difference. Tenacious German defense contributed significantly to the Canadian defeat.
We hope to have succeeded in giving the player an impression of what difficulties the Allies, particularly the Canadians, encountered during the beach landings.

Enjoy!

It's been a while but I am finally ready to release version 1.0 of The Dieppe Raid, a mod for Gateway to Caen.

Download link: The Dieppe Raid download

The Dieppe Raid mod is provided as a manual install only. The download is comprised of the full mod folder that must be copied in its entirety into the main directory of your Close Combat Gateway to Caen install.

C:\Matrix Games\Close Combat Gateway to Caen\Mod_Dieppe_Raid

GUI.txt

The GUI.txt file that is provided must be copied into the BASE folder of the stock game. It will not work if you leave it in the BASE folder of the mod directory.
C:\Matrix Games\Close Combat Gateway to Caen\DATA\BASE
Make sure to back up the stock GUI.txt first! You must revert to it when playing the stock game.
The GUI.txt file determines the coordinates of various interface graphs. Since we used the PiTF interface it is significantly different from the stock game. Mods without changes to the interface do not require switching between different files.

CCE.exe - Dieppe Mod.
This file is a shortcut to the mod. Place it where it suits you.

Known bugs:

The day selector in the editor screen is not working properly, especially from day '6' onwards. If the left bracket is not placed accurately it will result in a CTD. Best to leave it alone.

One test player experienced crashes on the White Beach map. I have not been able to replicate it.

The AI might not always fill its forcepool slots. This will cause a CTD. Make sure the AI forcepool slots are filled in before moving on to the battle.

July update:
I have coded the maps and have been playing test battles. Next up is to complete the stratmap, that SchnelleMeyer has been working on. Remaining graphics work like icons is on me.

Issues so far: nothing major in terms of maps or data. I may want to recode some maps here and there. In terms of forcepools: the small battle groups on the PiTF/GtC platform can be an issue. I am looking for ways to increase the number of used unit slots without creating unrealistically large battle groups (several German BG's are company size or smaller).

No ETA!

-Charisma: in one of the workbooks this is described as "Commander's Charisma.  -5 takes morale away from troops, +5 gives morale to troops.  Range = -5 to 5" .

I find your observations very useful. For the Dieppe mod that I am currently working on I need extremely defensive , "static" , German battle groups as well as aggressive battle groups and this info has helped me understand better what settings to use.

Thanks Freeking for your research and observations. I have used the registry modification myself but never bothered to save the instructions on how to do it. Thanks for the reminder.
Have you found out what difference the various battle group aggression / caution settings make?

Wow, over a year since my last post in this thread and so much progress has been made. As a reminder, please check our facebook page for regular updates.
Meanwhile, 12 maps have been completed and we are now working on the map coding and the strategic map.
A preview of the strategic map, created in 3D you will find here: Dieppe Stratmap

Not mentioned in that article, but on a Dutch news site, is that just 50K is to be paid to the German state. The remainder is to be paid to charity, like an animal shelter and a hospice.
The man was not prosecuted for the (presumably) illegal nazi parafernalia that in Germany are often associated with the glorification of nazism.
Bottom line: he was not just a wealthy excentric but possibly a nazi adept as well.

I have been wondering also what you think you can add compared to the classic CC games. Gateway to Caen allows for guns to be towed and infantry to be carried on vehicles.
I believe you should seek your improvements in AI behaviour: unit tactics, vehicle movement, combined vehicle/infantry tactics, surrender/ truce conditions. If you plan on a strategic map I'd like to see an AI that knows where to move, when to move and when to retreat.

ohh  COME ON NOW......................

What..? all of ya talk about modding and editing.. guess its easier when it requires ZERO thought and all the columns are predetermined..  what im doing is much like the early days of CC editing when it was alot of educated guess work

thought id ask around though.. i see i wasted my time doing so. perhaps someone might chime in. hell, i at least expected an educated guess .. i also realize alot dont have this version..why use it for a mod no one has the game too..  ONLY CC that will work with this idea and have the best results

been real sick but slowly getting better.. i think.. dunno yet but im not good at all..  in any case,.. i plan to finish one project before the last nail is driven in my coffin.

CCMAT has never been very popular I believe and not owning a copy myself I have never looked into modding this game myself.

It's okay to point out your modding pioneering achievements although the potential may not be fully appreciated by everyone else. The golden rule is to mod for yourself so as to not be disappointed by the lack of recognition from community members.

So Atomic was far ahead of its time. Outlined soldiers are finally becoming a reality on the battle field. Next will be a redesign of US military doctrine to get sergeants shot first and armour move zigzagging on good roads.

Awesome Jatke, thank you for taking the time for this tutorial.
Before I take the time to read all of it: will it explain how I can adjust the standard deployment zone permanently or do you think that that will not be possible to mod?

And please remember that you won't be able to play multiplayer unless your opponent is using the same files.
