Any feedback for changes?
|
Hi, We have been playing this H2H and have so far got through 60 odd battles. Its a tough job getting off those beaches as it should be,.. almost there at the end of the first day.
I would suggest that maybe a separate H2H GC be included with the following change :-
The 3 'Ranger' beaches be made encounter battles instead of the US attack, which they are at present. We found that by having them as attacks they just weren't worth playing, as the defence is so strong in TLD that they just don't have the strength to move forwards against a human opponent. Its also not possible for the Germans to throw the rangers off for the same reason, so the 3 maps just become stalemates. While not strictly accurate this will at least get around this problem, and maybe allow some action on those beaches.
The only other difficulties were:- The strength of the support which appeared to be weak compared to other games, the only one to have any (limited) effect was the Naval barrage, but even that wasn't great, the airstrike and mortar barrage had little effect, this was so for both sides, in fact I actually ran a couple of squads through a German mortar barrage at one point with little problem.
The regular mortars seemed to suffer from this too, and by the time we had played a few games we had generally stopped using them. As attacker they were only useful for providing smoke.
Overall a nice mod, and one that makes you think a bit when attacking, as the MGs and snipers are a great problem, however with the big Bgs of the US providing you time your attacks these can be overcome at a cost (lots of Germans medals around ! )

Hi mate:),
Sounds good that you are still working on this Mod and updating it as it was one of the best under CC5.

Based on the feedback above and the fact that I raised both artillery and mortar for the French I will lower French artillery on the first couple turns.
|
I think this will make a huge difference, although as you do say the French never really used their potential artillery support, partly due to their doctrine of using land lines rather than radio to communicate, and the complex procedure they had for calling for support fire. I guess in the end it comes down to the question of where to draw the line of reality v gameplay.
One thing that is striking is the behaviour of the troops in the later or new games as opposed to the old style CC5 troops, of which lots of post have been made already. This is noticeable when playing the TLD Meuse as against the CC5 Meuse in this way...... Under CC5 you could attack and lose 5 -10 teams, but you would take your objective 80% of the time, with the 'new' troops of TLD etc. its more than likely that you will attack and still lose 5-10 teams but due to the troops constantly going to ground you will NOT attain your objective.
Thanks for taking the time to update this I look forwards to trying it out in H2H when you release it.

A great new way to play and it means that all the new mods for TLD etc. can be played easily, in fact once you get used to the site its probably as easy to play on Tunngle as it is via TCP. Plus it has a chat room so you can met new players and there's no hassle with firewalls etc.
Well done to Pzt_Crackwise for this brilliant find. so simple even I could manage it

Hello all, I just recently played the TLD version of this in single player, and can highly recommend it. I would imagine this would be a brilliant game to play H2H, but as there's very few people around on game ranger now I decided I'd give it a try in Single. To start with I tried playing as French, but that wasn't too successful so I switched after a couple of day to German and played the full game, which was one of the best I've had in SP mode ( I usually give up after a few days as it gets a bit boring ). However this mod was different, the AI actually fought back at times and with a little tweaking could put up a stout defence.
I suggest to anyone considering this to try it using these tweaks:-
Play as German side, as the AI defends better than it attacks. Use a setting so that the French have an advantage in number. After the first line of maps (the German supply depots are cleared) limit the number of changes you make to your BGs to one or two units, this will make it harder to overrun the French guns with your armour. When the French opposition BG contains artillery observers, make sure that one present, these can compensate for the sporadic use the AI makes of its barrages and Air Strikes, as it seems somehow to recognise and use these units often to good effect. If things seem to be moving too fast, accept truces when the AI offers them.
While these will indeed slow down your rapid advance they do make for a far more enjoyable game and one that will give you the occasional headache :)
Thank you very much for this mod and for the wonderful maps within it, I look forwards to the 64 map version with pleasant anticipation.

I think it needs more HE shells. Its currently a very weak unit because of its impotence against infantry and the very slow turret speed.
|
To throw some light on this I attach the HE Ammunition scales from early 1944 for British AT units, out of interest I've also included the 6 and 17 pdr info too:- 6-pdr up to 25% 1st line 96 rpg, all types 17-pdr up to 5% 1st line 90 rpg, all types 3-in M10 up to 30% 1st line 90 rpg, all types
1st line scale includes the rounds actually with the guns (the F group of the troop) and those available for close supply within the unit (the T group of the troop), in the case of an M10 the rounds carried by the vehicle would be approx 50, with another 40 being with the trucks of the T group.
I hope this of help to you. Cheers Ronson |

'Heroic Voices of the Spanish civil war'........memories from the International Brigades, by Peter Darman
Quite an interesting book, and I would say a must for anyone interested in this period, Ebro and like mods concerned with this war.
The titles a bit misleading as this mainly deals with the 15th Brigade, mostly the British battalion and the US battalion, all the English speakers in short.
That said its really a superb first hand account of this war, seen through the eyes of the men that fought it on the ground, who contrary to common belief were not all middle class committed 'party' members, consisting mainly of working class men with a 'leftist' viewpoint. All the major battles the IBs were involved in are covered from Madrid to the Ebro, with chapters on the trianing and equipment too.
The final chapter 'Reflections' is very interesting as it traces the survivors in later life.
If you're interested in this period or simply have never read much on Spain before its well worth a look.

Following up on the original post...... Within India the educational legacy of the Raj is till felt today. The country has the 2nd largest English speaking population in the world. Although reviled by nationalists this is by no means a universal view. The 'untouchables' Dalits seem to regard English as a force of liberation, so strong is this view that they have personified English as a Goddess, English Devi, and worship it.

Hello nikin,
Follow this link to the download of patch on Matrix site......... http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=3060832
As you will see its located in the private members club so you will need to join (which is free) and your game serial number to download and instal it.
Not sure where the updated Meuse file is now, it used to be on RD clansite, but I'm not sure which patch that one is for now. It used to be a stand-alone mod...not a mod swap one, I don't know if this has changed either.
Hope this is of some help to you mate.

I wonder if there are any Battleships left in Europe? The Royal Navy maybe has one left?
|
The only remaining RN ship of this time is HMS Belfast, a town class light cruiser. this is fully restored and moored between London bridge and Tower bridge on the south bank of the Thames in London. As far as I know its open to visitors every day of the year, apart from Christmas period, but check with the Imperial War Museum before visiting just to be sure.
All the battleships of the period were scrapped, the majority before 1950, with only the KGV class living on until the end of the 50's, when they too were broken up.

I agree with Dima,
13/18 Hussars were part of 27 A.Bde which landed 2 sqns with DD Shermans in the intial assault on D Day, 'A' sqn assisted with capture of Hillman supporting the Suffolks, the other ('B' sqn) assisted No4 Cdo. in capture of Ouistreham.
Although 22 A.Bde of 7th A. Div did land in Gold area, they didn't start to arrive until evening of 6th, and were not fully landed until evening of 7th.
Any 'breaking out' of Gold beach would have been done by the tanks of the assault A. Bde which was the 8th. ( Sherwood Rangers or 4/7th R. Dragoon Guards.)
22 A. Bde, with the exception of one Firefly per troop, were fully equipped with Cromwells in the fighting(sabre) sqns.

If I am not mistaken some units if in supply, with or without being connected to XXX corps are provided tanks after a certain date.
|
Rightly so, the 101st AB took under command the 15/19 Hussars the armoured recce regt. of 11th Armoured Div from at least the 19th September. Around the 22nd Sept. 44RTR was also attached from 4th Armoured Brigade. Both these formations came from the flanking VIII Corps.
The 82nd AB took under command the Nottinghamshire Yeo. (Sherwood Foresters) from the 8th Armoured Brigade from around 22nd Sept. They had , after the arrival of Guards armoured, up to this point been supported by one of the Guards armoured Regts. who took part in the fighting around Mook with them. (I believe it was the Coldstream, but I could be wrong).
I think however that you do have a point in so far as these attachments came about AFTER the link up by the main forces of XXX Corps, this should be the governing factor of recieving this support, rather than the question of supply or not.
