PostForum: Close Combat The Longest Day   Posted: Sun Jan 20, 2019 10:15 am   Subject: Newbie questions about TLD problems
Hello, after years not playing the game I've recently bought TLD and have been really enjoying playing CC again. However, I've had quite a few problems and if anyone could answer them, I'd be very grateful:

1) despite searching forums online (including this one) I've never found an easy fix for the Windows 10 full-screen issue. I can never see the bottom of the screen, so I can't see any info about enemy teams, can't see the clock etc. Is there a way to fix this on Windows 10?

2) I've played the Grand Campaign a couple of times now and both times, after a week or so of playing, the screen freezes ("not responding") and when I close the game and reopen it, the campaign I've been playing has disappeared from Saved Games. This is irritating to say the least. Any solutions?

3) This is not an issue as such but is there any reason why the game now lasts two/three days rather than a possible thirty? I'm guessing for memory reasons but is there any way to play TLD over a 30-day period like on the original CC5?

Many thanks in advance to any help with any of these.

PostForum: CC5 Battle of Berlin   Posted: Sun Jun 22, 2014 10:36 pm   Subject: Re: Crash
I have the same issue - I started playing the Berlin mod for the first time this week (I love it) but a few games into the campaign I start getting regular crashes, usually 5 mins or so into a game.

The error message "Battle of Berlin 1.0 has stopped working" comes up.

Can anyone help? It's a real pity, I'd like to be able to finish the campaign.

Yes, many thanks Mooxe and Dima -
I still have some weird minor issues but I can live with them for now - at least I can play GJS again

Just for the record, the glitches are:
1) If I pause a game and go and open something else (e.g. Firefox, Itunes - anything else) when I come back to the game it's ruined - all the men have become luminous purple blotches. If I knew how to show a screenprint I would.
2) the campaign map doesn't work - by this I mean the various sectors' boundaries are all muddled up so it's impossiblle to see which unit is where. It's also almost impossible to move a unit on the campaign map at the beginning of a turn, so I can only fight statically (and will thus eventually lose the campaign). Assigning air/artillery support is also extremely difficult - only sometimes is it possible to "drop" the support onto the required unit
3) some very minor things - the piat now makes a huge "BANG BANG BANG" noise which I think should correctly belong to some massive German infantry cannon or something. And some of the unit images from the team selection page are wrong/muddled up e.g.  bazooka's image is a tank, an infantry unit's image an anti-aircraft gun and so on.

I'm still enjoying the mod (it's been years) but if anyone has any ideas what's happening....

I blame Windows 8 - eveything used to work in the good old days!

Dima, thank you so much, that was it and now it works!
I can't believe I forgot to reinstall the patch - huge thanks again, I've really missed playing GJS

PostForum: Tech Support   Posted: Sun Jun 15, 2014 6:23 pm   Subject: "Unable to read one or more registry entries"
I have horrible Windows 8 on my laptop and although I can play the original CC5 Normandy I am now trying to install mods.
I have succeeded as getting as far as installing GSJ (the icon changes to the British pic) but when I try to open the exe I now get the message "Unable to read one or more registry entries. Please reinstall Close Combat."

I have tried right-clicking on the icon, running as administrator and checking compatability with Windows 95 and all the other options on that drop-down menu.

Does anyone have any other ideas? I saw a fix for this error for Wacht am Rein, adding a registry in Regedit, but don't know what I should add for CC5

Many thanks as always for any assistance!

Thanks guys - yes I have made some progress. The problem was that the install was automatically going to Program Files (x86) and not just Program Files. I have now reinstalled as you suggested and - JOY! - I now get the GJS icon on my desktop so the mod install seems to have worked fine.

However (!) - I now have the error when I click on the icon of "Unable to read one or more registries. Please reinstall Close Combat"

Is there a simple fix for this?

Googling for a solution I found this thread http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=2108221&mpage=1&key=&#2108846 which suggests a fix of creating your own missing registry but the one it gives is for Wacht am Rein. Does anyone know what the equivalent registry entry should be for Normandy?

Many thanks again in advance for any help

Yes.. look for index.mpi. The search will bring a hit back for your CC5 folder, and should also for where ever the GJS one is.

Hi Mooxe thanks for your valiant efforts!
I tried searching for index.mpi in Regedit and, among many others,  it brought up C:\Config Manager\CfgV13.exe
and C:\Program Files (x86)\SSI\Close Combat Invasion Normandy\CC5.exe

Is this right? Should the Config Manager be IN Program Files too? Maybe this is where it's going wrong.

Has anyone managed to install mods with Windows 8?
I can play the original game fine, and COnfig manager seems to work fine, but Mods will not work - I just get the same original game. I suspect it's because of Windows 8's TWO Program Files folders. Any help extremely gratefully received!

I just wondered if anyone has managed to install the GJS mod on Windows 8?

I have followed all the steps in the guide and GJS is shown as installed in Config Manager. But when I run the game only the original 5.01 game comes up.

If anyone can solve this mystery for me I'd be EXTREMELY grateful!

PostForum: Tech Support   Posted: Sat Jun 07, 2014 4:27 pm   Subject: Windows 8 incompatible with CC5 mods
So, I could never get this fixed back in February 2014 and since then I've just been playing the original game with no mods.
I now thought I'd try again - the problem must be because my new laptop is Windows 8 and the two folders (Program Files and Program Files (x86)) causes issues.

So, this time I uninstalled everything then followed the instructions for GSJ mod installation. This time, at the first step (the Full install), I changed the destination to "Program Files/SSI/Close Combat Invasion Normandy" (or whatever it is), because the default folder that came up was "Program Files (x86)/SSI/Close Combat Invasion Normandy

But now I get the error message "Can't find the directory: LocalFx\."

So I guess this is not the way to go either.

Can anybody help with using CC5 on Windows 8?  I really miss it and would love to play it but it just seems impossible for someone with zero computing skills (like me) to work it out.

Thanks again in advance - I'm not giving up!

Mmstangl did you have any luck in the end? I've been thinking about buying TLD but have been having such a nightmare trying to just install CC5 mods thanks to the horror of Windows 8 on my new laptop that your post made me pause.

PostForum: Tech Support   Posted: Mon Feb 24, 2014 7:40 pm   Subject: Re: Mods not working
I think it must all boil down to the infuriating two program files folders with Windows 8 (I'm sure there's a good reason for them, they can't just be there to ruin any chances of my playing CC5 mods). The logical explanation is that the original install/config manager etc are looking in one folder but the files have been downloaded in the other.
Is there a "How to use CC5 with Windows 8" guide anywhere? I've looked around the forums but can't find any easy fixes.
Alternatively, Mooxe you said try and find where the Config manager files are being put - do you know the names of any of these files so I can try and search for them?

Many thanks all for your help. Please keep any suggestions coming! I'm having fun playing the original for the first time in years but would love to return to GSJ!

I ran regedit and searched for "Normandy" as you said - it brings up a whole heap of stuff - most of which seems to have no connection to Normandy (Windows Media Player?  Skype?) but whatever - the Close Combat download is listed as in the (86) folder.

Any more ideas?

Thanks again

Hi Mooxe, its 64
Yes, I did a full install. Years ago I had everything set up fine on my previous laptop (but that wasn't horrible Windows Cool
The original install is saved in C: Program Files (x86)/SSI/Close Combat Invasion Normandy

Huge thanks again for your time

Many thanks. I followed your instructions and did that but nothing changes - in Config Manager it says GSJ is installed (I've uninstalled it and reinstalled it just to make sure) but it's still the old US infantryman icon and when I click on it it's the original version - not GSJ

Many thanks for your reply. Sorry, but I'm not sure what the compatability mod is or how to run as administrator. If you could tell me what to do I'd be extremely grateful!

Thanks again

Hi, I have recently returned to CC and installed Normandy and the 5.1 patch. I have gone through the GSJ steps and everything seems fine. I go to Config Manager and click install and it says it has installed, no problem.

But when I open the game it's just the same original CC5 - no mod

I have Windows 8.0 - any ideas where I might be going wrong very gratefully received!

Does CC Starter come with any instructions? I've been trying to play CC5 on Windows 7 for the past week and spending about 2 hours a day trying to fix mods - averaging about 7 different error messages a day - all without any success,  so any help would be great!

Maps missing - error 5 - "blah.btd does not exist" "disk full"  "cannot open blah blah blah" .txt file does not exist"  etc etc etc etc ad nauseam. What fun!

Hi, I'm looking for anyone who'd like to play on Gameranger sometime. I'm a complete noob in terms of H2H although I've had CC5 since it came out. So you might have to be patient with me to begin with!

I'm London time so maybe someone out there would like a game - I'd be particularly interested in playing long campaigns but don't know if this is possible with H2H?

Many thanks

I'm having the same problem I think - utterly computer illiterate but I've been struggling to install mods for CC5 for three days now. I've clicked done all the "Administrator" changes as recommended but nothing works.  I have Windows 7 and this is the problem I'm sure as everything used to work fine on my old laptop (XP).

The latest stage I've got to is - when I go to Config Manager and try to install GJS mod -  "Failed to copy C:\program files\SSI\Close Combat Invasion Normandy\Data Campaign\Grand Campaign to System\Original\Grand Campaign (Error code =5)

Can anyone suggest anything?  Many thanks in advance.
