PostPosted: Wed Jul 26, 2006 6:15 pm Post subject: Questions about Russian Airborne Reply with quote

Hello,

What is the translation of the name "parachutist" or "Airborne" (what is the correct appellation ?) in russian, and, if possible, what is the abreviation ?

In the mod battle of Kursk, there is the 26th Guards Airborne Regiment, of the 9th Guards Airborne Division. Also, I search documentation of the russians parachutists during the world war II (notably pics and weapons), can you think a site on this subject ?

Thank you for your help !

Here is what I have found;
Воздушно-десантные войска = ВДВ, "airborne troops"
ВДВ = VDV
VDV = Vozdushno-Desantnye Vojska

Hope that helps Very Happy
Can't wait for this mod Smile

I found this article for Russian paratroops on Lone Sentry;
http://www.lonesentry.com/articles/geronimo/index.html

Quote:
ORGANIZATION

Within the Guards Airborne Brigades (Red Army short designation—VDV") the battalion is the tactical unit. The battalion consists of three rifle companies of 115 men each, one machine gun company of 89 men, one trench mortar battery of 92 men, one antitank rifle company of 112 men, and one platoon each of engineers, signal communications, and reconnaissance troops. Total battalion strength is 699 men.

Each VDV rifle company has four platoons of three squads each. Three platoons are rifle platoons and the fourth is a machine gun or mortar platoon. The mortar company is equipped with six 82-millimeter mortars.

The VDV brigade consists of four battalions of the organization detailed above, with a headquarters containing a gas platoon, medical section, and band. VDV brigade strength is between 3,500 and 4,200 men.

Officers, noncommissioned officers, and certain designated men are armed with submachine guns. Officers also are equipped with a pistol. Other men, with the exception of special "sharpshooters who are armed with special sharpshooter rifles, are armed with rifles or carbines. Hand grenades are handed out in unlimited number.

Each rifle company is equipped with nine light machine guns and three 50-millimeter mortars.

u can call them "Desantniki" if u mean Rifle Team. But VDV abbreviation like "VDV Mortar" or "VDV MG" sounds ok as well.

AFAIK 9th GD wasn't airborne, neither it was founded on base of AB unit.
Even more, i can't recall any AB unit in Kursk area.

i have TOE of AB regiment circa 04.1941, but iam almost sure that it was chnged during first monthes of GPW.

iam not mooxe Wink
but yes, it was 73rd Rifle Division that was renamed to 9th Guards Rifle Division in Nov.1941.

Had to check it more closely Smile,
and yes, there was 9th Airborne Guards Division formed in Dec.1942 on base of 3 AB Brigades that's why it had AB name. But it had standard Guard Rifle Division organisation. Commander during Kursk Operation was Guard Colonel Sazanov A.M.

i have copy of official Guards Rifle Division TOE circa March 1942 with description of everything it should had have. Guess it won't be much diferent from the TOE 9ABGRD had during Kursk Operation.
if u need it, send me email on dimafedorov [at] msn [dot] com .
