I am currently playing a couple Utah GCs. One as Yanks, one as Germans. The 1st one is very challenging. June 6th puts your very lightly armed AB units up against hugely superior FJ units. your AB have BARs, tanks, virtually no field or ATG and not many HMGs. Mostly every AAR I have read about the 1st couple days of Utah paint a bleak picture for those AB units. The FJ in Vierville are cut off from day one, and without supply by the afternoon so it is a welcome relief. However, they can still mount a devastating attack. The 12cms of the FJ units are the prize to destroy, usually by dropping an A26 on them. They pretty much cripple any attack you try to make. The hardest part about the 1st two days is holding maps with your AB. In the right position they can cut off two or three German BGs. Hold long enough and your armour can come up from the beach and take the pressure of your AB units just trying to stay alive.

As with alot of GCs as Allies, you can get easily frustrated in the beginning days as losses can be high, and some units have to fight to defend very small areas on a map to survive.

As Germans I believe you have to pull back and establish a formal line of defence. Vierville should be given up on the afternoon of the 6th. The FJ should be setup with two units in battle with supply, and one unit behind them to take over. Mederet and Azeville will only waste your troops which are. Uncle Red can actually turn into a loss for Allies. Its to hard to retreat from Uncle Red back to safety so that unit can fight to its death making shermans is #1 target. The most important task for the Germans however is not to obstruct the landings as long as possible, but to manage where the flow of reinforcements go.

All good points MOOXE, and very true.

I also might add that the Allied AB Bazooka teams, though only two man teams, can put up an excellent AT defense. On the first day of a GC I had an AB zook team take out three German Panzers, even if they were only the 35-S kind Smile
