PostPosted: Tue Jul 17, 2012 3:08 pm Post subject: elements and location of photo? Reply with quote

Hi,
bumped into this photo while doing some Operation Perch research.

One caption claims it's

"Tanks of the 13th/18th Royal Hussars advance with No. 4 Commando on D-Day"

another caption describes it as being

"Elements of the 7th Armoured Division breaking out from "Gold" beach."

I don't have enough historical knowledge to even make a good guess but, what's your opinion ... and why

thanks

13/18th is a better candidate as 7AD didn't have DD Shermans Wink.

I agree with Dima,

13/18 Hussars were part of 27 A.Bde which landed 2 sqns with DD Shermans in the intial assault on D Day, 'A' sqn assisted with capture of Hillman supporting the Suffolks, the other ('B' sqn) assisted No4 Cdo. in capture of Ouistreham.

Although 22 A.Bde of 7th A. Div did land in Gold area, they didn't start to arrive until evening of 6th, and were not fully landed until evening of 7th.

Any 'breaking out' of Gold beach would have been done by the tanks of the assault A. Bde which was the 8th. ( Sherwood Rangers or 4/7th R. Dragoon Guards.)

22 A. Bde, with the exception of one Firefly per troop, were fully equipped with Cromwells in the fighting(sabre) sqns.

Cheers
Ronson
