A few months ago, I realized the need for a new desktop system. I started thinking about alien ware, and stuff like that. In preparation, I started pruning my game collection and at the time CCMT did not make the cut. But, when I did actually acquire the system, I came away with a low end Dell system and Win 7 Pro pre-installed.

This new system has a 2.4 GHz CPU (better than my old system), but I completely inverted my gaming list. I ditched the 3d games, retained a few  strategy games, and recalled CCMT.

So, I have been messing with it, and decided on a small campaign (ala CCMT). A CC4 campaign, the Ardennes, Battle of the Bulge, and more specifically, the Northern shoulder.

I have always enjoyed the Battle of the Bulge, or CC4, and especially the maps. And thanks to CCS, I have a goodly collection of CC4 maps. This includes those from CC4, Yuma's woodsie versions, and then there were a half dozen remakes from WAR. Actually I used all of the WAR maps that had a place name in common with the CC4 maps, plus a few others. About 20 maps in all.

Here is a Battle Guide for creating the battles. Some battles have several maps available, and most of the time I set up one battle for each available map.

I like small to medium sized maps. So, I use column rules to make everything a infantry battles. You can have 5 support teams, but only 2 of those can be vehicles. And sometimes it is fun to use messed up (weak) groups that might be vulnerable to Sherman tanks or 57mm anti-tank guns.

Many of the CCWAR maps use closed forest areas. IMHO, this makes for a sub-standard map. You might need to use the overview map to perform movement. And, as a general rule, I like to see the infantry when they are firing their weapons.

You have a lot of options for deployment areas with CCMT.

So, I thought I was finally to an end with CC, but its works on my new Win 7 system, and I read where Pete had something working in Win 10. So it is conceivable that CC will live longer than myself.

I have enjoyed CCMT, which allows you to add custom maps until you puke. And for several years, that is what I did. But for all the effort (and fun), I came to the realization, that unless the map was made by Atomic, chances are it is substandard in may ways.

Of course, there are exceptions, like the Bloody Omaha beach maps. So I decided to ditch most of my sub standard maps which reduced my collection considerably.

The easiest criteria for identifying a sub standard map is:  Arrow

1. If the map is made post 2004.

2. If the map is not made by Atomic.

I have my own rules (or guidelines) for determining what in my mind constitutes a sub-standard map. These are listed below.

1. If a map's coding is not complete (like doors and windows).

2. If a WW2 map has less than 144 or more than 400 deployment tiles in area (they break the SP game system).

3. If a map restricts the anticipated visibility or function of the game forces (like trees in WaR, TLD, or LSA maps).

4. If colors are too saturated (like all CC2 maps).

5. If a map has unrealistic or out-of-scale features (like octagonal roads and railroads).

Now that the Matrix era of CC is over, I would recommend COI or CCMT to new users. But, there are probably not a lot of new users now days.

I suppose there is a percentage chance that Matrix will release a 3d game. But that will not support multiplayer and add-on material.

So we are lucky these games keep working with the new iterations of Windows. Since COI and CCMT anticipate that you might add new maps, it is imperative that one has a solid mapping tool. I highly recommend Mafi's 5CC for this purpose. Mafi is a first rate programmer by most standards.
