Recently, I played the great Stalingrad mod for CC5, and I was defending as the Russians. I killed 5 of the 6 soldiers of a German squad, who were sneaking towards me at point blank range. This one soldier killed two of mine with a knife and killed the rest of the squad with an Mp40, while my guys just shoot from 1m away - not murdering him.
A command squad of 4 was about 50m away and also shooting away at this one German. The Russian squad was wiped out with 4 shots. So, how is this possible? I know that the AI pathing is bad, but how can this happen?
I have some screenshots. Sorry, but you'd have to click on the picture to see what I mean.

I took me a while to study what you did..
My opinion
I have played this mod as the Soviets. I noticed troops wouldn't line up well with building edges. Anyways it looks to me that he was hiding I have this happen often in the concrete bunkers a lot when I assault them. Even after 5 minutes I would still take fire from a hiding enemy that wouldn't surrender. He was probably in ambush mode (with an mg) which makes him hide, and can see and calculate everything your troops were doing, he then can plan and attack. Also the reason your command squad was killed was because they left the cover of the rubble and wall, this also goes for you non command troops are not in good cover as they were mowed down crossing the wide open factory floor.
Some things to consider:
0. AI can hide on map things where cover is great like that overturned metal scrap piece. (Or whatever kind of garbage dumpster the thing is) The ambushing man has an mg, which was worse.
1. Before you played did you set all conditions for the campaign or battle in options to even?
2. Did you make sure you updated the game to the latest cc5 version? (I can't even keep up with the updates)
3. AI can do that if they are vets or elite even with 1 guy and you have a team of rookies.

0: What I'm saying is, is that this guy was being shot from 6 different people and didn't die. He even got to the point of killing two with a knife, then mowing down the rest of the squad, while being fired at the whole time.
1: By accident, I left 'See enemies' for me on. Other than that, it's 100% realism
2: Yep
3: I think my rifle squad was orange (combat training), the command squad was green (experienced) and the 'garbage shooter' was green as well.
Another thing is that at one point, about 9 soldiers were shooting at this guy and about 5 at extremely close range. Well, I guess that's why it's called CC.

Looks like the one man army is on an element type with more cover . Could be a military equipment element type but that is just a guess based on the image of that thingy he is lying on.

I often have trouble finishing off single remaining soldiers in close quarters using a full squad because they get the "No clear shot" thingy when their squadmates are close to the target, while the single enemy soldier is free to fire as he pleases. I guess it's just one of those odd things that happen in Close Combat.
