A lot of the custom maps that I have downloaded (30 to 50%) seem to crash the game when I try to use them.

A crash window comes up but there is no text telling me why. Confused

Any ideas?

Thanx

that is not normal.

can you give more details, under what conditions does the crashes occur? Can you narrow crashes down a specific map?

I am on a win xp computer.  All the files are in the correct folder.

It is a lot of maps.  Here is a few of them:  ficnorm, enl420, cagny2, formigny, frosin, garrison, map112, ramelle, jville, lausitz, lbnraum, periers.

Anyway, I didn't see a pattern of why some will work but others didn't.

Thanx

Also, it crashes when I press "NEXT" to enter the game from the requisition screen.

It just gives me a "close combat error" and a red circle with a white X and an "Okay" button.

I ran the patch last night to see if maybe that would fix it but no luck.

I have also tried reinstalling.

Some maps will give you an error like that if the resolution your using causes a conflict.

If you get a map crash, first try changing your screen resolution.

I'm not the best person for tech advise. Some of those maps may need WF mod to work?

I tend to find less problems with maps found in map packs. They have been recently tested.

In a perfect world for us CC3 fans we would......

...have every close combat III map that exists at CCS for download.

...have every map with issues segragated into a problematic section so they can be fixed or at least warn those who want to use them.

...have a constant release of new close combat III maps being made from other CC games & mods of the series.

...have all the CC3 mods that exist at CCS for Download.

...have all the C3 GC's organized with Map Packs.

Lots of work for a sleepy game I know...

I am pretty sure it is just my computer and not the maps themselves.  Dagnabbit!

Rings a bell

No sure but try selecting all your maps in the maps folder, click properties, make sure they're no read only

also go to your maps folder and map sure the custom maps have been unzipped into the folder, not into sub folders

Yeah, some were "read only" but changing it didn't seem to make a difference.

I've made sure all the files are in the maps folder.

I've tried changing the resolution.

I'm pretty much stumped.

Also, the crash seems to happen when the "loading sprites" message is up.

It doesn't get to the second message of "initializing AI".

Ok select one of the maps thats causing issues and see how many files map it up... there should be six ~   .rfm .mmm .ovm .bgm  txt and .LOS  You need all but .rfm

Yeah, they have all six of them.

I have another computer I am going to try it on later.  A Windows 7 one.

Maybe I can get the CCStarter to work on that.

Well, I installed it on my Win 7 computer and those same maps crash.

Is there some "tool" that I am supposed to run with the custom maps?

This is something of a necropost but I've been having the same problem.

Might be a little more information that could help?

I'm running CC3 on Win7 and while I've been able to run some custom maps there are others where I've encountered the same crash as OP. There's no error text, just a prompt to press ok.

I thought it might have something to do with the map dimensions but I've been able to run "Demansk" with the 22 x 24 squares measurement, Bastogne 19 x 21 and Carentan 17 x 14. Some original maps and some conversions. None of these have given the rectangle size crash relating to display resolution.

It is maps like Hill112, Chemin, Gosse and Dog Red Easy Green that are crashing.

I checked the files and none of them are set to read only. I looked in the [map name].txt files to see if there were a pattern with the max "X" and "Y" measures but there isn't a consistency there either. Casino Max X/Y 72 works while Dog Red Max X/Y 72 doesn't.

Bit strange. If I can get CoI working then I'll try the maps on that to test.

[EDIT]
Just tried them out on CoI and they work.

[EDIT 2]
A bit more poking and prodding. I think it has to do with the elements.txt file in CoI working in concert with the game's .exe. I've been able to swap out the other BASE files from CC3 into CoI (all aside from elements) and for it to load successfully.

Going to need a little testing but I think this should make it possible to play with CC3's units, settings etc in CoI improved compatibility and with custom maps.

The .Exe uses some elements directly and their index numbers need to stay the same.
