Well I bought it on gog and did not know it wouldn't work on windows xp. Assumed since it came out in 1999....well I get the "unable to read one or more registry errors" tried various fixes here. but i just thought of an idea, what if it works in compatability mode for windows xp? I tried running as administrator with a password and it did not work.

So will it work with compatability mode for windows XP?

Do you know?

I refunded it off gog, but afterwards thought of the compatability mode thing. If someone here can confirm, that'd be nice.

If it does work I'd like to buy it again.

Shocked

I'll give it a try on my XP machine and let you know after I have slept.

Same error message when using the compatibility modes to try and run the game's executable. I also tried swapping the gog executable with the original Microsoft release, but no luck.

Try installing the 5.01 patch or a mod. Some mods and other exe's bypass the copyright check. I could not get 5.00 running on my Win10 system until the patch was in.

Thanks a bunch Hicks for helping me out, and thanks mooxe, maybe the 5.1 patch will work if I decide to roll the dice and get it again. maybe I should just upgrade to windows 7!

Since when does CC3 not work in Windows XP? Well, it does give an error message at exit, and the scenario editor can crash, but the game itself works fine. There is nothing special about the GoG release of this game: It is just the classic v3.0b with the usual No-CD patch applied, nothing else.

Yeah something weird here. It should work without any special actions on Windows XP.

The only further advice I can give you is ensure you are using the administrator account to install it, and use all the default folder it asks you to install to.

I ended up getting Cross of Iron when using XP as the original release was prone to crashing for me. Some weren't affected, seems to be luck of the draw.

With the gog version the only other thing that comes to mind is creating a set of registry entries based on the original release and using its executable - but after installing the gog release. I can have a poke around - install the original on XP and see if I can get a list of those entries if you would like to try this?

There are a lengthy list of registry entries and tweaks added by the gog release so trying to replicate them in XP would I suspect be a non-starter. They would I think be based on their nature to improve compatibility with post XP operating systems.

For what it is worth though Ive been able to run the gog and original release of CC3 on Win7. If we can get it working for you on XP then it's worth a shot though Smile
