Hard to believe it has only been 30 years.  I remember when it happened.  Then the Soviet Union collapsed just a couple years later.  Happy anniversary Germany.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-50361173

... "liberal democracy is being challenged and questioned", while foreign minister Heiko Maas said: "Power is shifting away from Europe, authoritarian models are on the rise, the United States is increasingly looking inwards".

U.S. is the oldest remaining Constitutional Republic left in the World.  Time will tell if Democracy will survive in both Europe and the U.S. or if more walls will be built.

Sorry my friend but that's like comparing apples to oranges.   Like how the Romans built Hadrians Wall or the Chinese built the Great Wall to keep people out and for defensive purposes to defend sovereign lands.  US did the same with Mexico to deter people from arriving illegally.  And US is the only wealthy nation in world that shares border with Third World nation? Yes Trump attempted to create policy to shoot at migrants trying to cross border but even his own staff re-buffed him and refused order as it is illegal according to our laws.

Whereas life under USSR military occupation was the opposite.  Walls and military border zones were created to keep people in.  Like a Jail.  Same thing in Communist China.  Slave labour camps to this day are designed to force workers to stay with barbed wire.  How many people wanted to migrate to Eastern Germany vs Western Germany?  The stats speak for themselves.  Can't figure-out why Russia went through all the blood sweat and tears of Revolution & Soviet Regime attacking bourgeois imperialism of west.  Only to become an imperialist dictatorship just a few short years after the fall of USSR.

China, Russia & fundamentalist muslim dictatorships (Saudi's / Iran , etc)  all hate liberal democracy and will everything they can to sabotage us.  Because we pose a threat to their tyrannical ideologies.

People flowed not only east to west, but west to east too, over 400 was captured after construction of wall. Many of them was CIA spies, saboteurs, several DDR guards was killed in clashes. USSR also was forced to entrench the borderlines due same troubles. Only in 50s soviet border was illegally crossed over 1500  times, including recon planes, ships, high-speed boats and even organized armed groups of now-called 'freedom fighters'. Invaders often used force against border guards and army units. So purpose of defense was in place.

Yes, walls was also built since that times by Israel, Egypt, India, so US is in good company, keep going.

Defectors were regularly shot dead at border long before Trump, officially. Not to mention irregular 'self-defense' kills by locals, not glad looking their lands become passageways for migration&narcotrade.

You a watched too many BBC shows. In US currently more people in jails that was in Stalin`s GULAG at once - and they often forced to work by private jails administrations. BTW, for many years BBC claims about over 1200 killed on Berlin wall. But only 131 cases wan opened during investigations after DDR collapse. Now BBC tells only about 125 killed. May be with slave labor camps they 'slightly 'overestimated too?

Once again, current Russia have no ideology beyond from classical imperialism&nationalism. Putin and his 'friends' wants independence, money and zones of influence and control. Russia wants to become alternate US in means of military power and economic ties of 'allies', not to watch closely on regimes and rules it support (US also likes to pretend blind when it profitable - Saudies,Israel,Ukraine and long history before) . Undermining democracy is interested only in degree of help to reach their targets. Inside Russia they are greatly committed to the allegations of their democratic rule and condemnation of the communist regime.

Read a great book about a East German guy whose parents defected to East Germany in the 1960's. However he was a neo-nazi and wanted to escape to the West. Caught once and locked in Prison. His second attempt was successful but only to find the next day the Berlin Wall was down. True story - https://www.amazon.com/F%C3%BChrer-Ex-Memoirs-Neo-Nazi-Ingo-Hasselbach/dp/0679438254

Over a 19 year period over 7,000 people died trying to cross from Mexico to the USA 1998 - 2017 . That said, their deaths varied from shootings, vehicle accidents, exposure and drownings etc. - Center for Immigration Research
