How about those referendums?

A fair election in a war zone where hundreds of thousands people became refugees.

Sounds legit.

It's as legal as the Kosovo precedent, isn't it? But I would not be worried about the legality of the referendums, but about the fact that infrastructure in Europe has begun to blow up. I think it is obvious to everyone who the beneficiary of this).

How about those referendums?

Referendums are OK, when they are result of national-freedom movement. East Timor. Even Kosovo in some value. Such a movement was possible in 2014, but that chance was loused for Russia that time. But, international acceptance of any referendums is clearly a political question. Here is elections on Ukraine-controlled part of Donbass in 2019: https://youtu.be/ryNXQz2EmbE - people goes to poll bypassing armored vehicles, riflemens and uncleared munitions. That was OK, you find nothing about this in OSCE Reports. BTW, that was the LAST elections held on that territories - Zelensky, dissatisfied with relatively high results of opposition parties in the east, canceled next elections there:
https://www.ukrinform.net/rubric-elections/3123919-g7-ambassadors-hope-canceled-elections-in-18-donbas-communities-to-take-place-as-soon-as-possible.html
https://osn.com.ua/news/news/ukrainian-authorities-cancelled-local-elections-in-part-of-donbass-opinions.htm
http://www.engl.pravua.info/in-2020-donbass-will-remain-without-elections-why-did-it-happen/

So, even friendly to Russia countries like Serbia and China, will not accept referendums results, having own territorial issues. At same time US and EU will accept any Ukrainian-organized votes, even if people will be literally forced to vote at gunpoint.

So Russia is now annexing the four areas.

What was the war about 7 months ago?

Russia will accept into its composition 4 regions that voted for it in a referendum in accordance with Clause 2 of Article 1 of the UN. And I'm more worried about what kind of war will be in 7 months .... or earlier (((.

Of course, better was not to waste resources and time for referendums. Great shining lights example: Golan Heights. Just grab and tightly hold what you think is yours, and wait for Trump (or Gorbachev), using UN resolutions as toilet paper meantime. But Putin still need some legitimacy for domestic public, so we have show of numbers. Remember, doesn`t matter how YOU vote, does matter how THEY count- applicable to any modern democracy.

Meanwhile, i`m personally surprised, that Biden do not proclaim US victory over Nord Stream's. Likely withhold closer to elections, its useful to have some aces in sleeves to bump the rating, like Bin Ladden was suddenly found in territory of close US ally in region to boost Obama`s campaign.

Is there any good news in Russia about the war?

News about the Ukrainians encircling Russians at Lyman is making the rounds here.

Extremely unhinged desperate speech today by the Supreme Leader, looking quite Fascist.  Boasting about his illegal annexations.  The West is Enemy and America is Satan he said.  Sounds like a speech from Iranian Revolution.

Here's summary of intercepted cell phone calls by Russian soldiers calling home.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cxjyGVnAsdg

"Half of our Regiment is gone"

"We were given an order to kill everyone we see"

"When I come home, I'm quitting the Fukin Army"

"Putin is a fool.  He wants us to take Kyiv, but there's not way we can do it"

Just allow Ukrainian 'talking head' show to spread from one Internet dumpstock to another for several months, then it become a serious news from a trusted source.

No more need for daring about some western leaders sensitive ears. Especially, in light of they already drew Putin as Satan for tens of years.

Maybe not complete encirclement. Have seen many different reports. Main story is Lyman liberated from Russia.

The senior officers in Russia's military must have known they could not wage a conventional war no?

Estimated 5,000 Russian soldiers encircled and cut off.  Again, unencrypted cell phone communications intercepted because Russian soldiers were desperate and wanted to say their final goodbyes back home.  They knew their calls would be intercepted but didn't care because about to be captured or killed.

Russia attempted to encircle Ukrainian forces many times but they wouldn't let it happen and retreat.  Ukraine however has been able to encircle Russian forces twice now due to dysfunctional command.

Russian sources said hitting Ukrainian 30 man squads with machine gun fire and they still continue to advance anyways.  Guessing these are special forces with body armor no other way to keep walking after taking MG hits assuming this is true.

I agree such an important object as Lymon had to be defended like Stalingrad. Senior officers apparently just do not know this. A la ger com a la ger. Wait and see).
