Have you heard of combat mission ww2 games? If so then great! If not you have to try them! So I went to GOG and downloaded Combat Mission 1 for $10 and liked it so much that I bought Combat Mission 2 & 3 off ebay, for a total of around $20 all together spent. The series is very well done and pretty much historically accurate featuring all the areas troops and tanks from Africa, Italy, East Front and West. The controls are easy to learn after about a week. The game has the tanks to when the year they came out and the quick mission battles are amazing. You can set the year to whatever troop experience type of fight and many other options. If you guys like close combat high chance of you liking the combat mission stuff. I have not got into combat mission 2 because of the price alone ($50-$90 a game!) but maybe when it drops A LOT! I'm liking the CM1 stuff just fine! I would compare this to the same level as close combat stuff right now. Good stuff! I highly recommend!

Here I are some videos.

Hey Vobbnobb,

I loaded all 3 early cd and dvd's had bought years ago of CM back onto my pc also this past week.. MUCH easier controls than CM-BN IMHO and have been having a blast with CMBB and CMAK.

Just in case you have not found yet? Can get oogles of mods and scenarios for both at a few places, easy to add also, no mod managers or anything required. Most cases just add to the already built in scenario folder:

Thanks for the feedback johnsilver, It's funny I never heard of this game until a couple weeks ago even though it was released some time ago. I will certainly take a look at the scenarios and mods. Thanks again.

Hey vobbnobb, I tried out the demo for this on this site. I think the game isn't compatible with Windows 8 though. I also attempted to play Squad Assault, but that isn't compatible with Wodnwos 8 either. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Hi Rodmorg,

Guess you are referring to CM-BN? Took a little lok over at Battlefront's forums and found a few topics on that, hope one helps:

demo won't start

demo froze after 30 min

I was using Win7 64 earlier while playing it, same with CMBB and CMAK. Think KG_Jag is also using Win 7 as well. Finally back to playing against an opponent after all these years..

The 3 CM classic games, is what I was referring to.
The demos are the first 3. Try them out.

On another note,
I never heard squad assault, so I tried the demo from here and graphics are very poor but play ability is ok. I played the newer BN demo but not on windows 8. Sorry.

I have compared this to cmx2 which doesn't have as many vehicles and controls are not as good. The quick missions are 10x more fun the in the older ones games as well. For example you can play as Hungarian, Finnish, German or Romanian In the Barbarossa game. Cmx2 will probably charge you to do that in modules it releases. I really can't say enough good about the 3 cmx1 games. 10/10.

I agree Combat mission is very hardcore.

I know this may sound stupid or uninformed but I really dislike the playmobile look of the infantry and that you only see three men per squad. Is there a mod that fixes this?

I wish there was, but the game only shows the leaders of that squad, I got use to it as it still reduces the number each time the squad gets hit. Play ability way over graphics.

Battle for Normandy is quite good, but I hate Battlefront's business model. The game with the expansions is just too expensive.

^^ Although a super superb game, that's why no one has really ever heard of it, charging for patches is not good.

Correct. You can patch CMBB and CMAK up to 1.03, even on Battlefront's own site for free. Have -0- clue what the issue they are talking about in that paid 1.04 patch where they send a disk out..

I am running both CMBB and CMAK with Win7/64. Have played MULTIPLE games, including some PBEM battles with opponents and we are having -0- problems without that paid patch.

Maybe it fixes some minuscule glitches we have not noticed? Possible, but it hasn't affected the operation of the games 1 tiny bit by not having it.

johnsilver, I turned the first campaign mission (D-Day Russia) of  CCIII / COI into a playable 3D version for combat mission Barbarossa to Berlin. Let me know I will send the file. Each side has almost identical forces to the cc3 missions.

Here ya go, it's kind of a slow battle. Right click and save link as. Place it in your CM scenarios directory for Barbarossa. I don't plan on doing the entire cc3 campaign although it could be done easily with the editor. Just something I was messing with. Compare it to the CC3 one and let me know.

Nice and more brutal than in CC3! I liked it Vobbnobb. Russians held most of the map, Maxim MG was a thron in side, even though blew up the building!

One thing would suggest? Use of Section leaders, like for the Hvy support. In the case of that scenario? The HMG34 and 8cm mortar. You've probably found out that leaders play a huge part in this series, troops lose any morale and they are in trouble. It was hard to keep morale up with the HMG and 8cm, providing cover, along with some of the infantry advancing along Pavlov's house. The HMG broke from the center trench line early on and became 'routed". It takes.. Think it's 5 full turns, once a leader is nearby to get morale back once that happens.

On an Assault style scenario, my 2c need some leadership around if it's going to require all the units not in same area.

That light AT gun was a thorn! Thought had it KO'd early on, then moved the Stug to destroy the Maxim's hiding bldg, and it started taking side shots on it again.. Had to waste area shots and precious HE shells to finally take it out.

Lots of fun and Oh so much longer joy than the initial CC3 opening scenario! 10 check plusses for this work effort!!

I left a section leader in corner of map accidentally, if you are playing the soviets he is over there. Thanks for the feedback and improvements. I forgot to mention that the Germans are suppose to be advancing while soviets try to hold the ground. If you can advance against the Germans to grab flags that works as well.

When I played I had to rely on the PTRD team near the river to get close to the stug to even attempt to penetrate the sides. The super low profile tank blends in well while going through the tall wheat fields.
