wow

Two people claim to have found the armoured train in district of Walbrzych
Local tales say the train was packed with gems and guns by Nazis in 1945
Nazis are said to have sent it south-west to hide loot from the Red Army
But it was never seen again - with legend saying it got caught in a tunnel

[quote="Bungarra";p="81866"]Polish media is abuzz over the rumoured discovery of an armoured train car, which has revived old lore of trains full of gold and jewels stolen by the Nazis that vanished after World War II.

Great story. It will be good to see the outcome of this one. If they can strike a deal and whether others can lay claim to the loot also - original owners families ( traceable art, jewellery  etc).

If I'm not mistaken any Gold that is Marked with a Country's symbol/name is Always their Gold.
Regardless of the time it was lost.

I wonder where the Gold the US sent to Russia went when a German U-Boat sank the ship full of Gold?

There probably is still a lot of gold, paintings, art, etc. still hidden away somewhere from World War 2. In Swiss bank vaults etc.

100% certainty people are still hoarding loot from WW2 from both sides.   Amber Room jewels are the biggest mystery.  I'm guessing the Swiss have a lot in their bank vaults.  Plus they speak German.

Assuming it took at least a team of 20 Germans to bury a loot train, odds are highly likely at least 1 survived the war.  He would have certainly travelled east to Poland to reclaim the loot.  Although the Cold War and long-time Soviet occupation would have made that kind of difficult.  And maybe too old to travel back after the Cold War ended.

My guess is that the vast majority of loot and war treasures were picked through clean by Red Army and in the West by US.  As I recall US forces in Southern Germany did re-capture large stockpiles.  You know there must be quite a few Russian and American families secretly hoarding treasure troves.

Thanks for that link. Axis History forum is a treasure trove in itself.

I have been following this story to. I am guessing there is nothing there. There just hasn't been any evidence pointing towards a tunnel ever being there, I haven't read any atleast. If there was a tunnel, wouldn't they be digging into rock/steel/wood that kept the ceiling from collapsing?

They gave up on hole 3 was last post I seen at the forum.

What about the Swiss hoarding it? You always hear about Swiss for chocolate and GOLD. The Soviets were certainly down that way and into Austria and the wars end. How far down did the US army go?

Its all over for a while.....

I can say being a driller that they must be terribly short of funding.... 20 X 22 metre holes I would eat up in a day

Mobilisation to & from site say $5000.00 US... One day drilling $10,000.00

Being so far into this saga, you would wonder why they would stop without spending this small amount of money in the scheme of things..

You would think there would be too much to gain... They have everyone together on site...

Maybe they were clutching at straws all along...

I read the BBC articles from last year.  It appears the sources of information are not that reliable in my opinion.  The tunnels near the castle in Breslau were never actually completed.  The other train "found" appears to only have evidence of defensive guns.  Interesting the Polish government allegedly did its own investigation in the 90's.  Right after the Cold War ended.  Maybe they were afraid the Soviets were going to intervene or claim the loot as reparations.

Interesting article I found off wiki

Portugal

During the war, Portugal, with neutral status, was one of the centres of tungsten production and sold to both Allied and Axis powers. Tungsten is a critical metal for armaments, especially for armour-piercing bullets and shells. Much of the Axis tungsten was purchased with Nazi gold bullion, which was looted from the countries they had invaded as well as their dead victims. It is estimated that nearly 100 tons of Nazi gold were laundered through Swiss banks, with only four tons being returned at the end of the war.[18]

During the war, Portugal was the second largest recipient of Nazi gold, after Switzerland; this came through the sale of tungsten, with the German armaments industry nearly entirely dependent on the supplies from Portugal.[19] Initially the Nazi trade with Portugal was in hard currency, but in 1941 the central Bank of Portugal established that much of this was counterfeit and Portuguese leader António de Oliveira Salazar demanded all further payments in gold.[20] Presumably the counterfeit currency were the infamous banknotes produced by Sachsenhausen concentration camp victims in Operation Bernhard.

So what happened to the remaining 96 tons of Gold loot?  Only 4 tons were returned, sounds suspicious.  Assuming that the Gold was melted down and sold many decades ago.  But there has got to be several tons at least remaining out there hiding.
