What do you think of this? what could be added to that empty space? I was thinking actual number of soldiers in unit like a counter since in pitf/gtc units are depleted most of the time or is the nato symbol ok? maybe an abbreviated type of the unit type? like HQ, Inf, AT, Tnk, H.Tnk etc

This looks quite nice. I would at a nato symbol to it. You might add a shadow behind the soldiers.
