#384: Re: New and up coming War / Conflict genre Movies Author: mooxe, Posted: Sat Jun 20, 2020 5:16 am I haven't seen anything good lately. During this covid situation I have been rewatching older war movies.
I am looking forward to Greyhound. The wiki page states Apple TV bought distribution rights and is releasing it 10 July. The trailer has me a little worried.... in particular the scene where the the Germans appear to be speaking to the Americans on the radio. How did they get their frequency... was this based on anything historical? I don't need it to be historical, I just don't like made up stuff thrown in without pretense.
If anyone is looking for a lot of time to kill, War and Remembrance is a 12 part mini series from 1988. About 25 hours long. Its pretty good, mostly drama with some action. I watched it back in 2009, and I'm currently on the fence about watching it again.

#388: Re: New and up coming War / Conflict genre Movies Author: JFFulcrum, Posted: Tue Jun 27, 2023 4:27 pm Watched chinese movie 'Born to Fly'. Trailer: [ US, Russian. Movie is like 'China's Top Gun', its interesting comparison with 'Maverik', watched by me just a month ago. China movie is more about defense, furthermore, the main enemy is more technical troubles (exposed in relatively shocking amount of truth) and nature itself, than 'foreign invaders'. While both movies sponsored by each country's military, and there will be enough red flags or messages about China's military might - but this one contain considerably less cheap patriotic tropes, that was in 'Maverick', and more accurate and complex story used to deliver remains. The effects level on par, although much lesser sci-fi/superhero elements (while not totally absent). Some trouble of movie is that too many scenes was replicated from original prototype, up to level where you watch exactly Hollywood movie, but with chinese actors only, strangely. Really strong lines with test pilots mass grave and real communication records in the end.
In result, 'Maverick' looks more like some strange spin-off of Marvell's 'Avengers' franchise, that a sequel of original 'Top Gun' - literally 'Top Gum'. 'Born to Fly' is somehow deeper and complex, while not without shortcomings, like love story be more 'stealth' that chinese J-20 fighter or not best main young actors roleplay.
