Is anyone interested in updating cc5 winterwar to tLD?  I can help with new or revamped maps (yup I'm thinking about starting again)

Very temping Southern_land....

I would like to retire my CC5 install and many full mods have already been converted;
- Battle Of Berlin
- Bloody Omaha
- Ebro
- GJSv44 converted with updates for  LSA
- GJS TRSM converted/updated to Battle for Caen for TLD
- Meuse
- Stalingrad
- Stalingrad Der Kessel

But Winter War along with a few others still are out there;
- Africa4041
- Battle Of The Scheldt
- Karelia_v2.2
- Khalkhin-Gol
- Ortona
- Stalingrad Operation Circle

If I missed any, sorry this what I have for CC5 and TLD/LSA on my PC today....

If you port it (I really like it), I'm enough sure that this mod suffers the random wreck selection bug. Teams shoud be a bit reworked to avoid it (and create battles).

There is also CC5 El Alamein: it's an excellent mod. Its tanks/vehicles are too big and they should be resized. And of course it suffers of sleeping IA caused by huge minefields (should be removed in a great part.)

I have a version of Utah mod that I have adapted better for TLD (it was for WAR, so already converted even if not for TLD specifically).

About Afrika 40/41 it's a mod with big potential and beatiful maps, but it needs a work about Bgs (the best italian Bgs you see there are out of the timeline of the mod; it's also unbalanced; and there is the problem about huge minefields).

I'm in....

I have the data files converted and can start TLD with them.

I'll have to fix some data errors;
- AlsTeams ammo count
- AxsTeams  ammo count
- Soldiers ammo count
- vehicles best kill and best mount

Anyone want to do some research Nov. 30/1939 to  Mar. 13/1940 for every 4 days?  Example Nov. 30 - Dec.3, Dec. 4 - 7, Dec. 8 - 11, etc.
- what was the prevailing historical weather?
- air support sorties per side?

My favourite CC5 mod, as it shows a crushing defeat to such an outnumbered side, and just typically the gameplay. Would really like to see it for TLD. Good luck

Hi Tejszd,

Weekly based historical weather can be found here:
http://www.winterwar.com/other/weather.htm

It's not every 4 days, but the info can be very useful because there is specified when it has snowed.

Thanks Drizzt. That is a good site and I haven't been there in years!

Too bad CC really doesn't take into account the temperature as the weather in CC really on tends to affect if you get air support or not. I guess the exception is CC3/COI where maps can be marked winter and non winterized equipment may fail.

What do you think about to "convert in snow" some or many Karelia 2 maps? (historically speaking, I don't know which/how many maps the two mods share.)

Sorry to change the subject but- Khalkhin-Gol was so awesome in my opinion. Its a mod that needs fixing and a few extra maps. Just a few... and it would be a great. Nice and small quick campaign for those who are in a rush.

Looking like hard infantry fighting for the new Winter war.

I have a couple of questions on map making SL:
- How do you make your own ground textures ?  - In earlier posts you said some were used from Google Earth . - In that case how do you make them good enough or detailed enough for CC?

The ground texture on Hill 121 map - Was that made with layer mask and brushes ?

#31: Re: winter war Author: southern_land PostPosted: Fri Mar 25, 2016 12:08 pm
    —
there are some areas in Google earth that are good enough for textures but you have to pick and choose.  I've found several in the States and Australia, lots from Germany and several from here in New Zealand.  Hunt near major urban areas.

Hill 121 is a paint over of one of the Stalingrad maps (hill 120  Very Happy )  I sampled the ploughed areas of the original with the magic wand tool set very close 15/255, added a new layer added effects, then repeated that three times with different selections and effects

Turning them out high speed SL! -Very inspiring previews.

Thanks for the tips SL. Im not trying to highjack the WW thread but..
I tried the selection method, but must be doing it wrong cause I cant get anything like the effect you got. ( Might be because you know mapmaking a lot better than me:D )
When I used the magic wand with 15px tolerance on those fields - just a few pixels would be selected.. Did of course find another way but not getting exactly what I want...

#39: Re: winter war Author: southern_land PostPosted: Sat Mar 26, 2016 10:47 am

No problem.  happy to help

When the magic wand is selected there is a tick box available "contiguous"  Untick that and it'll select everything within those parameters on the map

southern_land, the map updates are looking good! Remember as you change maps sizes that my monitor resolution is 1920x1200 so nothing smaller! Very Happy

The CC5 Winter War data files have been converted along with graphic files (pics attached).

Still need to do uniforms.txt, campaign.txt and stratmap.txt along with recreating the battles, operations and campaigns. Then add the updated maps and any changes/fixes wanted....

Re: Afrika 40-41 - Definitely up in my top 3 favs.  I'd love to see that one ported to CC TLD.  Is JimRM2 still in the community??

@ Antony - Good to hear someone still likes my little mod. I will port it to CC TLD and finish it someday.  I've been selecting maps from Afrika, Ebro, and El-Alamein to edit and ultimately include in my Nomonhan / Khalkhin-Gol mod.

Very nice. Still remember playing the grand campaign of WW, took about as long as the real war itself.  :)

Not sure if it can be implemented but it would be nice if it would be a bit easier to destroy tanks with infantry. That was one of the things Finnish infantry was very good at, destroying the tanks with Molotov Coctails etc. The last time I played WW the Soviet tanks were just a little too effective against my infantry, especially the immobilised tanks.

not exactly sure but I've dropped these to about regular cc3 size, and tested in COI.  I'm not sure how aggressive the IA is compared to tLD.  At least this size the finns (The player side to my mind) are forced to confront the heavier Russian weapons right off.

Good work so far!  My only gripe is that the trees look a little 'bright'.  Like Pitf, lots of bright colors tend to give it a fantasy feel. Like happy-happy land where the Hobbits lived.

Finn Mount?

For some reason this map ;looks very familiar to me.

Question:
Is the Ice codded as being passable?

In CC5 certain ground elements can be either mud or dry ground based on weather. Can the same be done with ice?

Yeah, one of the cc4 maps reworked

and again yeah at the moment all ice is passable - killzones without cover

Not sure but I had an idea that ice instead of turning to a crater becomes deep water with the associated graphic so goes from passable to impassable

I see many water areas in maps (lakes, etc.). Bel's A Sau Valley mod had nice water vehicles, like gunboats, which could move on water. Any plans implementing something like that?

There is a nice photo of water crossing in winter war.

Yeah, sorry.

unfrozen water does not make sense, either...:D

ok, so any change with ski troops? I remember bersaglieri motorcycle teams were implemented in Afrika 1941. I think Ski could work as a vehicle with one driver. A top view of skiing soldier with long skis could be used as image. Handarms of soldier could be implemented as vehicle weapons.

Btw, ski troops already have a bonus for mobility, IIRC.

Very nice work, SL!

If you aren't busy with any projects following WW, would you be interested in doing some maps for one of my mod projects?

I'd love to see all of the maps have the same high standards that you display in your work (inc road sizes, colors, textures, water placement, bridges, etc).
Terrain would be as diverse as Mongolia (KG/Nomonhan mod in process of completion) and variations on a semi-arid mountainous/desert, arctic tundra, snowy/muddy in southern Russia, and/or thick jungle with patches of flat land and rocky hills, sub-tropical Pacific islands, etc....

I've got about a half a dozen ideas for both obscure and popular mods that I'm planning for TLD and LSA!

PM me if interested and I can give more details

Anyone run into a problem with Stratmunger or RtBTool where the map data pulled from the CC5.ICD is wrong?

No matter what mod file I point to it shows the following values for the 1st map;

Center
X Y
139 97

StrMap Data
X Y W H
21 30 251 143

I have converted CC5 WinterWar to TLD and it works fine for single battles but crashes when I try to run a campaign on loading due to incorrect StratMap.txt values for the map locations.

Think I got it now!

With RtBTool you can read from the CC5.exe instead of the CC5.ICD and selecting "Maps on Strategic1 big screen" is giving me better looking values.

Note: using "Maps on Strategic2 big screen" gives the other incorrect values.

But is it possible to have more varying trees with slightly different colors and different types etc.? The current color looks somehow a bit plastic.

Really beautifull maps and awasome that they make an opponent out of the AI.

Just a little feedback on the Viipuri map (last one posted) - I think the open water should be a lot darker, - a very dark blue - or almost black in colour.
Otherwise the buildings and boats look great.

btw did you make up the boats from scratch or is there some borrowing involved?

Took them off of Google earth, same as most of the buildings.

the problem with the GE images translated to CC is soft detail.  With a little work "hardening" up the eves and chimneys and so forth they become quite usable.  The boats and buildings are pulled from the Rhine cities and London

My honest criticism regarding the last map:

The rocks on the river bank, the road on the bridge, the roads, sidewalks all have repeating (copy-pasted) patterns which give the map a very dull appearance.

PitF also has such map elements which don't blend in with the surrounding stuff - which I find a pity, since its maps are actually beautiful...

(Please don't get me wrong southern land, I really like your artwork normally!)

A quick update on progress.  I have a dozen maps fully coded and all of the others with preliminary coding.  Tested a bunch in CC3.   Working on the strat map, thats a mindfuck!  So still progressing but its become a trudge through the menial stuff now.

Thanks again Southern Land! - I knew the straight line trick in PS, but more generally I am not a very talented artist.

That Dresden building is a beauty - Must be one of the few large old buildings left in the center after the allies firebombing in -45..
Took a look at the .psd file and it gives a really clear picture of the techniques used. - Thanks a lot!

Issues/To Do:
Battles/Ops/Campaign need to recreated
Strat arrows not working properly
uniforms color need to be checked/redone

Haven't been able to put in as much time as I would have liked this summer but it is close....

Quick update...
-25/64 maps fully coded and given a quick preliminary test
-New strat map completed but not installed
-New tank azp started

Winter War port to TLD:
- Added RUvox.sfx to install in case someone runs the mod on WAR instead of TLD which doesn't include a Russian voice file
- Changed soldier graphic file to get smaller soldiers (closer to the map and vehicle scale)
- Converted mod data/graphics from CC5 to TLD
- Created a Winter War icon file
- Fixed ammo count (AlsTeams, AxsTeams & Soldiers)
- Fixed best kill and best mount (Vehicles)
- Fixed single battle random crash which was due to random wreck selection (Vehicles)
- Recreated Battles/Operations/Campaigns in TLD editor

Need to fix/port the;
- strat arrows
- Uniform colors

Then make any fixes/suggestions that are requested/seem reasonable;
- fix: German cross and US star used in battle for info icon(s)
- fix: US star used on stratmap for Russian BG info icon
- suggestion: increase molotov power
- suggestion: decrease tank MG accuracy/range

I do not think I'll use night battles as the winter conditions probably kept both sides in their shelters at night.

Progress is now painfully slow.  I'm struggling to find much enthusiasm.  I have coded a few more maps and started making new vehicles.  I'm not using an accurate px to meter ratio of the vehicles, just trying to make them look right in comparison

The BT 42 is what you mean I think, was only available after the winterwar 42-44

My plan is to add captured tanks via reinforcement (not quite sure if its possible as I imagine) but if you hold out from reinforcing some units until a certain time, after that you will start receiving penny packets of captured armour

Thanks for the update.

I will give my opinion on the vehicles - the ones I like best have the details visible and they are Vickers 6t, t40, t28-39, KVII, BT-5, BT2.

Those with very hight contrast or near 100% black shadows I personally dont like.

Keep up the good work.

Nice Work Southernland. I especially liked komintern. I think, this is a tracked truck. Too bad, we won't be able to mount men on it or tow artillery with that version.  Smile

Currently

5/64 maps remain semi-coded, the others are done and have some testing done
New tank made but not tested or finalized
strat - done all the graphics

Tejszd has ported the mod over to tLD with only a few minor glitches

So essentially it needs
-map testing (plus completion of 5)
-strat map working
-tanks converted to tgas and put into the tanks.azp
-xtra BGs added or current BGs broken down to fit the 64 map environment

Unfortunately I run out of mojo.  I was labouring a bit anyway but fell sick 7 weeks ago and still not better - coughinmg for 7 weeks with no end in sight.  Embarassed

I'm pretty much on the verge of pulling the plug

Thats great news! -So much work has been done on this conversion. SL you have to go see the doc and get well - 7 weeks coughing - Thats too long man.

Will Tejzd complete the work if you resign? - I really hope this one wont end up on the scrap yard...

If you want help or support for work or testing I am willing to lay down my projects to help out with this mod.

That will work as LSA can add units based the date/turn. The player will not have to reinforce if you do not want them to....

The stratmap is currently working well in TLD, but need some polishing and touching up.

southern_land/ScnelleMeyer things are looking good!

I have converted the data and graphic files to TLD.

Issues/Outstanding;
Strat arrows (CC5 original Strat map not req'd any longer)
Uniform coding
TLD new features not setup
- air supply drops (Russians did this for surrounded troops)
- variable support by difficulty
- etc.

Edit: is the CCS FTP login our site ID/PWD as I can not connect to upload the TLD Winter War files?

No, I've run out of omfph on the whole CC front.  Haven't played a game since well before xmas.  Going to try and get organised to upload the files, particularly the 64 maps and turn them loose so they can be either used or someone else can complete the mod.  I'll try this week and announce it here if I succeed

64 maps uploaded

58 stage one coded with ccIII elements, 6 still needing extra coding and LOS files (all could do with a final run through before final release)
A few tank and wreak images.

So we might as well do this right.  Anyone want to put their hands up to double check all the maps and finish coding the 6 ( names Muolaa, Sainio, Paamini Kelja laakso and Metsa) before general release so all maps will have identical coding?

Plus any new re-release features that someone wants to add....

Stratmap is in a state i would consider finished for first release. It was a lot more work than I originally anticipated since the base graphics files had to be re-sized.
Now gadgets line up nicely without (too visible) glitches and the Stratmap graphics looks OK imo.
Polishing of the graphics is still possible ofc.
Scenario editor screen is also 95% done.

De-brief map gadgets need more work, they are about 80% done.
I added connections in Stratmap.txt according to the graphical representation on the strat.

Next task will be making the 128 stratmap connection arrows.

Thanks guys. - The graphical work is Southern Lands doing and credits go to him. I have just polished some parts to make it work as a game stratmap.

Now work continues on stratmap arrows, converting SLs beautiful maps from CC3 to TLD coding, give them VLs and connect them correctly to the stratmap with .btd files.

After that I believe its time to check how the maps play, make any necessary coding changes and start making battles/OPS/Campaigns.

Was snooping around my CC Mods folders and found the Winter War TLD data and graphics that were converted to TLD to go to with the new maps (Southernland) and new strat layer (Southernland and ScnelleMeyer) that were being workied on.

I'll put in some time to finish the conversion so that the original CC5 mod can be played on TLD.

Issues/Outstanding;
Strat arrows (CC5 original Strat map not req'd any longer)
Uniform coding

TLD new features not setup;
- air supply drops (Russians did this for surrounded troops)
- variable support by difficulty
- etc.

Winter War CC5 Conversion to TLD

Issues/Outstanding;
Strat arrows - Fixed
Strat Debrief map layout - Fixed
Uniform coding
map connections; 6 to 0, 6 to 11 and 6 to 9 - investigating as CC states they are not adjacent but connections are defined in the BTD (50 point VL's) and Stratmap.txt files???
T38 shadow bigger than the tank
Map 08 Vuoksi house in middle map has no interior

TLD new features not setup;
- air supply drops (Russians did this for surrounded troops)
- variable support by difficulty - Started reading up on Air/Artillery support in the Winter War but will probably just use what CC5 had +/- to speed things up
- etc.

Just converting the CC5 Winter War mod to TLD so there will not be a new strat layer. I did send Southernland a PM asking if he still has any of the new Winter War maps he was working on and if they are close to existing locations to freshen things up a bit.

No Tejszd, the Winter war maps are not gone. He uploaded everything on Mediafire remember? - Well 9 maps is missing but 55 of them are there. They just need TLD coding, BTDs and testing.
The maps missing can be substituted by some of the originals.

Thanks for the reminder about them being uploaded ScnelleMeyer!

I found the information about where we were sharing files and downloaded 49 maps (there were some duplicates so its a few less than it looks like at first glance).

Update:
map connections; 6 to 0, 6 to 11 and 6 to 9 - investigating as CC states they are not adjacent but connections are defined in the BTD (50 point VL's) and Stratmap.txt files??? - Fixed
Map coding of building walls are not solid - in progress

I'm really looking forward to this - thanks for all of your hard work Tejszd. The maps look fantastic - such as the heavily wooded areas and large frozen lakes.
