Allied Airborne drop behind enemy lines during the darkness of night and Battle Groups crash the beaches at daylight!

Steiner commands German defenders as Allies enter France from the Normandy beaches. Allies/Line - Germans/Veteran, 20 mins battles with Morale Off.

1. Merville June 6, 00:20 - 3rd/6th Airborne launch a determined but somewhat cautious attack. AB succeed in their main objective of capturing VL to Bavent and secure all but one VL. They fail to knock static BG off map though ... due to a hard fighting enemy defense.

2. Pegasus June 6, 00:20 - 5th/6th AB take big losses attacking across mostly open terrain, but eventually capture Pegasus and destroy static units who are outnumbered and low ammo.

Strategic map June 6, 07:00
AB attack into Ranville and Bavent. Allied BG's begin beach landings.
German BG's are shown on maps they arrive at, and their movement is Allied player guess work until they engage Allied BG's on front line maps.

3. Gold June 6, 07:00 -
69th/50th comes under fire from position 1 (p1) as infantry teams move inland. Sherman Crab moves into hedge at p2 and exchanges fire with 5cm ATG's in p3 and p4 bunkers. Another Crab moves to p5 as mortar smoke is placed and infantry attempt advance west over open ground. Crab gets knocked out by p3 ATG, and infantry stall due to German fire from numerous locations. Artillery sent to p3, but ATG survived. Airstrike hit p4, but again ATG kept firing.

Crab eventually captured p7 VL to Cruelly, Allied infantry hit hard by German teams ... some which remain for next Allied wave.

4. Juno June 6, 07:00 - 7th/3rd Cdn.
Through mines and under fire, three tanks and most infantry get off the beach at area 1.
Tank supported infantry take p2, p3 and then together work towards p4 ... clearing concealed units in crops and tough fighting at p4 building and hedge. Allies make a three pronged attack on p8 where enemy units retreated to, along with a 5cm Gun. Hidden German sniper caused a lot of trouble for teams remaining on beach.
Allied infantry stalled at p5 and p6 taking big losses. An Artillery strike sent to p8, which weakened enemy teams and most of Gun crew. Allies continued pressure gained control of map.

5. Courseulles June 6, 07:00 - 8th/3rd Cdn.
Allied infantry staged at area 1 launched their attack, with a Sherman and covering mortar smoke, through p2 and onto p4. A second tank moved south from p3 with two infantry teams. The large group of Allied infantry faced fierce fighting around p4. Artillery was sent to buildings north of p7, which helped soften resistance. An MG42 cut down infantry crossing from p3 and an Airstrike called to p5 ... hitting with damaging effect.
A Sherman caught the p6 MG fleeing a building, while Allied infantry at p7 were under threat from a house to house counter-attack, but an Allied Support Tank was near area and got in a damaging shot. Shortly after the German defense collapsed.
Allied infantry took extreme losses ... less than eleven were left fighting at battle's end.

6. Sword June 6, 07:00 - 8th/3rd Br.
Allies plan infantry to get off beach and enter buildings at p1 and p2. Mortar smoke put down and two Crab tanks and a Support tank roll onto road at p2, p3. Infantry gets pinned and cover of smoke is lost as they struggle to get past sea wall. P4 and p6 are captured, but infantry gets torn by MG42's and enemy infantry teams. Germans counter- attack p4 and regain control. Allied tanks move to support infantry but two knocked out East of p7 bunker where German 5cm is firing from.
Crab at p3 swings around back of p7 in an attempt to gain the vital inland p8 VL. 5cm Gun is able to rotate backwards and target Crab ... exchanging shots. Artillery sent to p7, but Gun keeps firing. Crab nears cover at p9, but is knocked out.
German team enters building at p6, but single Bren gunner takes them out of action. MG and small arms fire kill two single soldiers in buildings. Two mins left in battle ... all is quiet. Allies have only a Mortar team left on the beach, as time runs out.
Allies suffer severe loss and fail to capture any off map VL's

Allied Debriefing:
Allied Commanding Officer should have sent Artillery earlier to either p4 or p5. Also, initial plan was good ... but Commander failed to revise plan as battle deteriorated. For example: infantry could have helped tank clear Northern areas. Commander may have suffered from loss aversion, and should have stopped attack and established defensive positions as battle broke down.

Also note: this may be one of Steiner's pet maps ... lol. He owns it

7. Ouistreham June 6, 07:00 - 1st Special Service Brig.
Main body of infantry push from p2 towards p4, while Centaur support tank moves along road at p1. Sherman tank takes alternate route, but is terrain tracked at p3. Heavy enemy fire in and around p4 slows attack, so Artillery called for ... opening way for renewed movement.
German infantry display solid tactics by moving back before being overrun, then taking new defensive positions. Allies consolidate their efforts to capture p6, p5 ... but meet tough fighting. Centaur's 95mm provides excellent support, persuading enemy infantry backwards.
Infantry assault is depleted at p8, but Centaur moves past missed shots from p7 bunker 5cm Gun, gets cover behind hedge ...  but can't gain the exit VL before time runs out.

8. Bavent June 6, 07:00 - 3rd/6th AB
Airborne met little initial resistance, therefore a main group was assembled to attack central map area, while two scouting groups were sent north and south to find enemy contact points.
German MG Half Track stalled central attack, but a Vickers brought up to suppress, while other teams fought their way to get close enough and forced its crew to abandon.
Extremely tough battles as AB cleared various fortified positions leading to last German strong point which remained in enemy control.

note: AB left Merville still in German control, in order to arrive at Bavent before a full German BG arrives next turn. A following Allied BG needs to clear Merville to establish supply.

Airborne again attack hard against Static units, trying to gain strategic locations before full German BG's arrive.
Enemy infantry found in main Manor building North West corner, supporting by a MG HT and MG infantry in buildings across the southern field at village edge. Several assaults were made before Manor was cleared.

10. Hamel June 6, 07:00 - 231st/50th
Two Crab Shermans simultaneously roll off beach drawing fire from a 5cm ATG in hedge ... a tank crew spots it, and knocks it out first shot. Tank supported infantry groups capture all VL's, but furthest West VL regained by few remaining German teams ... with time running out. Allies fail to regain control, but only seconds were needed.
Game freezes at zero seconds ... so similar battle results were recreated quickly by Allies destroying enemy units on beach. Allied player will hold movement of newly arriving BG one turn ... to simulate having to recapture the map.

note: no Artillery or Air Support used during battle, but was available.

Tough fights against this determined allied player. germans got lucky on a couple of maps but this may not have much of an effect on the allied onslaught inland. germans will have a hard time getting BG's into position to form a defensive line.

12. Gold June 6, 15:00 - 151st/50th
Second wave Battle Group tasked with clearing area, while first arriving BG moves inland. M-10 rolls into hedge at p1, exchanging fire with 5cm Guns in p2,p3 bunkers. Vickers MG and Bren teams help suppress.
Smoke sent to cover scout car and infantry advance along road and from p5 to p6. Scout knocked out at p7 as infantry struggle to move past p6.

Artillery sent to p3, but Gun keeps firing. Infantry move from p1 towards p2 bunker catching the sights of MG in p8 bunker. Second M-10 gets suppression fire to p8 with turret swinging around corner of hedge at p4.
M-10 is destroyed at p1 after taking numerous 5cm rounds, while third M-10 advances along road targeting p3 Gun.
Infantry converge on p2 bunker from p7, p1, and p4.
P3 5cm is blown up from M-10's 3in. Gun fire. Bunker Gun at p2 is finally destroyed as infantry enter throwing grenades and fight hand to hand.
Similar tactics are required to take out MG at p8, and last infantry engaged at p9

Tough fight to gain this ground with 5cm Guns in p2, p3 bunkers and MG in p8, supporting infantry ... and an experienced German commander

Got one at Juno too. It's tough to knock the 5cm Gun out when in a bunker or large hedge ... and sometimes the best way seems to be sending infantry to over-run the position.
Interesting also, that Shermans can take the 5cm at medium range frontal ... but are knocked out easy if you get in too close. So if it can't be done from distance or surprise/distraction ... then it's up to the guys on foot.

ATGs certainly run the gamut in CC mods... just in the few I have been playing recently...

CC5 Utah - Sustained small arms fire will kill them.
CC5 Stalingrad - Infantry assault or heavy calibre only. Mortars and small arms are ineffective.
TLD - Mortars will take them out.

13. Sword June 6, 15:00 - 8th/3rd Br.
Active Roster depleted due to heavy losses last battle here ... therefore, some infantry slots emptied to get one Sherman into duty. Was thinking of putting the new arrived BG into service and resting first BG, but unsure if gained ground would be lost cause of the swap.

Main attack force at p1, scouted West finding little opposition ... ushering other units forward. Smoke placed in front of p4 as three teams go over sea wall at p2. Germans concentrated deployment was in Northern area. Allied teams move into p4, p7 ... but get stopped and cut down by MG and sniper at p4,p5 and 5cm, along with infantry at p6.

Artillery sent to p6, but amazingly Gun keeps firing and most infantry survive. MG42 at p8 hunts infantry in top level buildings and other open LOS areas. Sherman moves from p3 to p7, at hedge corner and knocks out p6 5cm first shot while 5cm fired at Allied infantry at p4.
Several attempts made to destroy all German infantry in Northern area with Tank and infantry ... but lone sniper held out in p5 building . Tank and single soldier of rifle team capture p8 exit, but German team hiding in bunker partially regain with few seconds left.
Allied commander realized after battle that his knowledge of the map was lacking, and therefore had priority to capture p8 ... but was supposed to capture North West exit VL to Bieville. P8 VL exits to exposed entry VL at Bennouville.

Agonizing outcome for the Allies, but well fought by German commander ... intense battle

Less rare in solo play. All you have to do to capture a gun or vehicle is kill its crew with small arms and control that location at the end of the battle. What is truly rare is capturing any seriously wounded enemy soldiers laying about. Those buggers are have become immortals. No weapon is capable of killing them Smile

14. Ouistreham June 6, 15:00 - 1st Special Service Brig.
Second battle to clear this map ... German force reduced significantly during initial attack, but continues hard fighting.
Enemy units in bunkers are extremely difficult to defeat, and require infantry assault to overrun these positions. 5cm Gun and infantry in bunker p1 gets hit with Artillery, then smoke cover along with 95mm Centaur suppression. Two assaults were required to gain control, with a total of five infantry teams.
MG42 in p2 bunker taken with Sherman support, and two infantry teams at p3 hedges.
No Allied tanks lost in either battles here, important for movement into next map.

15. Creully June 6, 15:00 - 69th/50th vs. KG Meyer 352
New for version 8.0 ... Static BG removed at Creully, therefore Meyer arrives at same time as Allied BG ... resulting in a meeting engagement. In my opinion, this better represents Meyer's situation. His Battle Group first being sent to Omaha region from behind Bayeux, and then his force divided ... sending some units to defend against landings at Gold beach. And after marching all day arriving near Creully, troops tired and his force strung out over distance.

As seen in the screenshot the opposing BG's are side by side, kind of bumping into each other as they drive towards each other from opposite directions ... probably similar to history.

note: if Germans stop Allies first battle at Gold, then Allies would attack into a German controlled map next turn.

15. Creully June 6, 15:00 - 69th/50th vs. KG Meyer 352
Allied units hustle to gain control of strategic locations. M-10 17pdr rolls towards p6 from p5. StuG moves through stone wall at p2 from p1, and is first to arrive on road at p3. StuG knocks out M-10 first shot as it rounds the corner.

P8 Allied infantry teams assault across road targeting 7.5cm ATG at  p7.  MG at P9 (red) cuts infantry down on road ... Sherman moves up road to support at p10, gets in a couple of shots, but knocked out by Shreck in P9 (red) building.
Second Sherman rolls alongside destroyed M-10 and behind stone wall at p9 (blue) and trades shots with StuG. Sherman gets him with second shot.

Simultaneously, Allied infantry capture Northern most VL to Bayeux ... but retreat back from MG 42 team just arriving in house other side of road.

Allies fight hard to diminish German AT capability. Meyer left with only an Inf. Gun and Shrecks until StuG and ATG reinforce on turn 4.
Meyer can stay put and defend the Thaon VL, or move back to Thaon and hold out as long as possible until full German BG's arrive. Or move back further and merge.
Since an extra reinforce was removed from Meyer BG  in ver. 8.0 ... its fate is more similar to history ... holding the line for a short time before being destroyed.

16. Tailleville June 6, 15:00 - 7th/3rd Cdn
Allies enter at p1 and break into three groups. Center group infantry gets pinned advancing towards p2,p3 ... two tanks provide support, but buildings not clear until near end of battle.
Group heading North finds enemy in p5 building, and Southern group gets stopped at p4 ... calling Sherman for support.
Support tank sent directly to p8 rolls past missed shot from 5cm ATG in hedge at p6. Tank anchors control of the important main objective exit VL, as Allied infantry fight two enemy teams North of p6 ATG. Sherman drives to p9 VL but unable to gain VL other side of large hedgerow, and infantry unable to advance that far ... having to fight numerous times and exhausted from moving fast across distance.
Germans succeed to stall next arriving Allied BG ...

not sure why Meyer gets a meeting engagement at Cruelly. Meyer spawns there at cruelly, on a german controlled map, before the moves are actually made. Meyer should control the map and the allies should be attacking on.

like GR says ...a tough fight ensued. we will see how the rest of the front unfolds and consult Rommel on next german deployments.

17. Basly June 6, 15:00 - 153rd/51st
British Battle Groups get delayed at Sword beach, therefore 8th/3rd Cdn improvises by attacking Bieville ... leaving 153rd/51st to shoulder the duties at Basly.
Group at p1 advances under fire from p4, two Daimier Armored Cars assist and a third moves with infantry at p3.
Two teams fight to p6 while simultaneously center group pushes to p7. German teams take up fall back positions and continue defense with other teams further back. Group starting at p3 fight hard across open field with essential suppression fire from Vickers MG in building North of p5.
88mm fire erupts into p10 buildings from unseen Gun estimated to be near p11 ... a lucky 3in Mortar round takes out a few of its crew, but still operational.
Similarly, infantry gaining VL at p9 get hit hard and retreat back as 88 opens up from p12.
Two Daimier AC's sight the 88 from either side of a building at p10 and send 2pdr rounds and MG fire. One AC gets knocked out, but the other succeeds at destroying the big Gun ... and then captures the Southern VL while repelling infantry attacks.
Northern infantry can't advanced past p8, meeting strong enemy resistance.

i understand your logic, but after thinking about it more ... maybe the game calculates the arrival by what turn it is, not necessarily what order things appear to happen on the Strategic map. Therefore, since the map is without a Static BG and both BG's arrive during the same turn ... the map goes neutral except for arrival deployment VL's.
The unique deployment areas did create an interesting battle, and perhaps the best possible way to represent historical events.

18. Bieville June 6, 15:00 - 8th/3rd Cdn
Canadians deployment is confined. Infantry team gets cut down by MG42 at p2, as they go West across field  ... support tank assists.
Main assault moves down road to p3, infantry clear buildings ahead of Sherman. Elusive German infantry efficiently move throughout buildings and hedges ... keeping attacking soldiers under fire, and tanks busy tracking them.
Support tank in Northern field reaches p4 VL, but is knocked out by 5cm ATG at p5, after several shots. Small group with Sherman move down through fields towards p4.
Fierce skirmishes continue until Allies overpower isolated pockets and gather towards p6, where Sherman bounces round from p5 ATG. Allied infantry help suppress Gun as shots are exchanged, but Sherman prevails with knock out hit.
Approximately same time, other Sherman takes Southern road and captures important p7 VL behind 5cm Gun.

19. Bavent June 6, 15:00 - 3rd/6th AB vs I./125/21 Div
Airborne now put to the test, as full German Battle Group attacks with Armor support.
Para units prepare a defense at areas 1,2,3,4, ... and plan fall back positions.
Germans first regain p5 with SPG 10.5cm shells exploding into buildings ... followed by infantry.
Next the two Assault Guns and MG42's test probable areas of concern, but for most part AB units were placed outside of these lines of fire.
German infantry then advanced from p6 and p7, but got hit hard. SPG's followed close with explosions erupting ... knocking out a 6pdr. at p3, and sending AB units back to next line of defense.
Piat team had position for shot, but was spotted and destroyed. German infantry poured across hedgerows at several locations, causing concern of break through. One Assault Gun reached p8 with infantry in buildings behind.
Airborne gets pushed back ...

20. Ranville June 6, 15:00 - 5th/6th AB
Airborne tasked with clearing remnants of Static Battle Group, hemmed in at South West area.
Infantry attacking from p1,p2 take heavy fire moving through exposed lanes. Patrols sent from p3 and p4 searching for isolated enemy units. Finding nothing, both groups directed across fields to join attack at p5,p7.
Hidden infantry team cut down approaching p9 VL from Vickers ambushing in church tower and AB Rifle team in area flanks them.
Enemy HT MG42 drives to stop advances from several directions, but its crew are overwhelmed at p7 by assaulting infantry ... capturing the vehicle.
Combined efforts squeeze last units at p6.

22. Tailleville June 7, 07:00 - 9th/3rd Cdn
Allies top priority is capturing the exit VL to Hermanville at p7.
German force is still seven teams strong, including two MG42's and a 5cm ATG. Allies main attack comes from area 1, and proceeds to hedgerow and forest near p4. Vickers MG teams in buildings at p2 help cover other infantry moving to p4 from the North. Once in positions, Infantry rush the p4 building while smoke is placed and an M-10 enters area from driveway.
Rifle team at p3 takes fire from enemy at p5 and eventually is destroyed. An M-10 17pdr, with orders to stay behind cover, tried to help desperate soldiers ... but got knocked out behind edge of corner from ATG ambushing in clever position at p6. German infantry sensed weakness in the line and infiltrated North recapturing VL's.
Meanwhile, infantry captured p4 building ... having to enter. A fierce battle followed as soldiers converged at p7. Then units rallied to knock out the 5cm Gun and destroy MG and infantry at p6 ... but unable to reach enemy further back.

Again top priority is the Hermanville exit VL.
153rd attacks, while 185th/3rd waits to advance through their captured ground.
Enemy infantry defend intensely at p1,p2 ... and 88mm spotted at p3 as units move in from South East. Artillery sent to p4, but a determined and costly effort still required to knock out Gun and capture p4 VL.

24. Bieville June 7, 07:00 - 8th/3rd Cdn vs KG Oppeln I./22/21 Div
KG Oppeln's powerful Armored Battle Group aims to stop the Allied advance.

Germans send infantry from red p3 into building at p2, but find Bren team ambushing  and Churchill AVRE at p1 ... forcing their retreat. Churchill blasts several buildings which enemy is using to attack East.
An unseen German tank further West sends rounds into p1 hedge, although not able to hit Allied tank.
Two MG42's and a Northern area tank fire at p2 Bren unit and soon all are KIA ... allowing German infantry to re-enter p2.

Another assault into Allied held buildings from p5. A distant South East MG42 supports with suppression fire.
A German tank appears as it plows through hedgerow at p6 ... at same time as PIAT Group gets alongside haystacks at p7.
Churhill tank sends an HE round towards the Panzer, but is knocked out before PIAT sets up. German crew spot AT infantry and swing turret to fire, but PIAT gets it first shot.
Further fighting completely wipes out Vickers, Rifle, and Bren teams.
P8 German tank moves to support infantry fighting at blue p3, and is destroyed by waiting p9 Cmd Sherman.

25. Benouville June 7, 07:00 - 1st Special Service Brig
Commandos with supporting tanks are tasked with carrying the fight forward quickly, in an attempt to establish connection across to the Airborne sector ... as well as secure as much ground as possible before full German BG's arrive.

Infantry push hard along southern section of map and call for Artillery to hit buildings near bridge. After the barrage, several teams attack ... while another group further up the road spots a Marder waiting in ambush. Infantry track its movement, while a Sherman sets up for a side shot at T intersection.
Could have gone either way, but Sherman destroys it as shots are fired.
Outnumbered German infantry fight hard to the end, and keep control of several key positions.

26. Thaon June 7, 07:00 - 7th/3rd Cdn vs KG Meyer 352 Div

7th/3rd Cdn entered from Tailleviile after fighting through Static BG's.

KG Meyer 352 Div fought its first battle at Creully and then moved inland into Thaon to protect a gap in the German line, until reinforcement Battle Groups reach the front. Losses at Creully left KG Meyer without much anti tank capability (except AT infantry), until next turn ... when a StuG and a PaK 40 7.5cm enter its Force Pool ... through reinforcement.
Although German command seemed correct to defend Creully and now Thaon with Meyer ... it's obvious this Battle Group needs to re-establish connection to friendly territory.
KG Meyer is effectively cut off from supply, but with several options still available:

1. Capture exit VL's to Rauray or Hermanville, and move into friendly territory.

2. Capture exit VL to enemy controlled Bayeux and enter alone next turn, or together with 12/12 SS Armored Recon, which could simultaneously move into Bayeux (from Tilly) ... and have the benefit of a large shared deployment zone, due the close proximity of entry VL's.

3. it's also possible to combine efforts at Thoan with a German BG which can arrive through Hermanville next turn, but gaining ground further south during this battle would be important for this strategy, so as to have joining deployment areas.

26. Thaon June 7, 07:00 - 7th/3rd Cdn vs KG Meyer 352 Div
Allied commander doubted KG Meyer could be completely destroyed in one battle ... so planned to separate enemy controlled ground between Meyer and the southern most VL of Hermanville, and then attempt to capture all VL's.

Two Churchill AVRE's and Rifle team, starting at p1, attacked North.  An AVRE exchanged shots with Infantry Gun at p6, forcing its crew to abandon ... while single German team destroyed nearby.

Some German infantry quickly got into defensive positions, while other teams captured all top left quarter of map area, including Bayeux and Rauray VL's.

Infantry attacking towards p5 from p2 were stopped immediately by MG 42's and enemy infantry ... in p5 church tower and surrounding hedgerows.
Sherman drove up road near p10, but knocked out by Panzer Shreck's moving among buildings near p7.

P3 group of infantry patrolled south and met enemy fire at p8. German infantry had captured this VL, along with others further North.
An M-10 was sent to help recapture.

Churchill at p5 ordered to take p9 VL, but AT infantry ambush destroyed it just before reaching its target.

Allies then attacked p5 church from several directions, but couldn't get past MG 42''s. Another Churchill destroyed trying to support this action.

As battle neared its end, both sides were spent ..  still combat continued for ground at p10. A  Rifle team sent from p6 moved fast along upper road and caputured p9 VL to Bayeux.
Allies had three tanks knocked out, and heavy infantry losses. 7th/3rd Cdn will need rest next turn to rebuild points, after the extreme combat conditions experienced. Therefore, a nearby Battle Group will take over frontline duties against KG Meyer ... now surrounded, but highly motivated.

27. Bavent June 7, 07:00 - 3rd/6th AB vs II./125/21 Div
German infantry and a 10.5cm Assault Gun begin attack at position 1, and while advancing towards p2, get held up as a PIAT fires numerous rounds at Armor, and infantry fires MG and Rifles. AB holds temporarily, runs out of PIAT ammo and gets hits hard with HE and MG's.
Germans run into second line of defense further East and from p4. Units at p4 also help stop infantry advancing to middle field, but p3 does come under German control.
Another Assault Gun begins firing from among trees South of p1. Artillery sent, destroying some infantry ... later an Air Strike immobilizes one SPG, and the other is tracked against a tree.

AB soldiers keep fighting ... some fall back and others loop around South to North at Eastern edge of map to defend against a German breakthrough. German soldiers reach p5, but retreat back as Allies regain p7.
Germans also move into building at p6, although can't advance further due to heavy crossfire. Three Vickers MG's played a big roll overall in helping stop infantry ... packing a big punch.
Airborne does well to hold some areas, but could have been much worse if SPG's kept mobility.
Well executed attacks by German commander.

June 7, 15:00 Strategic moves

Looks like this (red line), is where the front has been established ... Allies attacked the beaches, pushed through Static forces, and have now collided with German reinforcement Battle Groups rushed forward to stop the invasion.

All German BG's available at this date are shown, but Allied BG's behind the front line have been removed in this image ...  fog of war, since this is a H2H online Grand Campaign.

Changes made in version 8.0 help simulate the panic and confusion German commanders faced getting their units to the front, and also make it possible for the Allies to advance past Bayeux. And as seen in this specific case, have meeting engagement battles at Lingevres, Tilly, and Rauray. This is the fastest both sides can get to these maps ... Allies maybe one turn earlier at Rauray.

Note: it is possible for Armor Recon 12/12 SS to attack into Bayeux, instead of arriving at Lingevres ... but that would have left Lingevres unoccupied for one more turn.
Also, KG Meyer had two chances to fight and then retreat back to Bayeux.

In our GC, neither side has attacked using connections between Basly -Buron or Ranville - Colombelles ... due to the attacker's deployment zone being exposed.

Germans start attack with group of infantry from p1 buildings quickly moving across field towards p2 supported by PzIV in hedge at p1.
A Bren Section and M-10 hold them back, but an MG 42 in building sites Bren team ... very soon team is only half remaining and forced to preposition.
Pz IV seen in field near p3, so M-10 17pdr enters hedge, taking aim. P1 Panzer gets an immobilizing shot ... next one knocks M-10 out.
A third Panzer with infantry, from Southern area, cuts through crops and gains p6 VL , and other soldiers alongside fighting into p7.
Germans advance with strength, forcing Allies back and shifting units to weak points ... trying to stop a breakthrough.
VL at p8 nearly lost also, as Germans enter buildings with support of MG 42's further back.
Germans field five Panzers, a couple of 88's, and infantry teams. Allies back on their heels.

31. Benouville June 7, 15:00 - 8th/3rd Brit. vs II./22/21 Div
Brits have Sherman front facing North at p1 and Vickers beside in building. Seconds after battle begins ... a 5cm ATG, hidden in hedge at p2, opens up. Shot misses or bounced ... initiating return fire. Rifle team at p3 sent to engage and finds more infantry embedded with Gun. Accuracy of 5cm and Sherman diminished with the effects of suppression, after several shots exchanged ... but Sherman gets the knock out.
Rifle team fires from p4 as infantry assault hedge with Sherman HE and MG support ... trying to root out enemy soldiers.
MG42 from Western buildings is able to target assault troops in hedge, making it difficult to finish off enemy.
Germans send more infantry across field from West to support, but many are cut down or suppressed by crossfire from Southern area ... although some are able to get into hedge and continue fighting.
A PzIV arrives at p5, guns blazing and weakening Allied teams along hedgerow. A PIAT Group, near site of destroyed 5cm, sets up for shot ... but Sherman gets knock out side shot by maneuvering close to hedge.
Southern crossfire helps Brits prevent break through into field where bulk of action takes place.
Germans also attack to p6 but retreat quickly under fire. Allies attempt over wall counter attack, resulting in retreat ... as MG42 defends. A PIAT Group loops South into driveway finding a waiting PzIV at p7. Tank fires and backs to cover, with PIAT Group pursuing into building. German soldiers seen running to support tank as time runs out.
A gritty battle, with Allies getting the upper hand.

32. Thaon June 7, 15:00 - 9th/3rd Cdn vs KG Meyer 352 Div
7th/3rd Cdn continues advance inland into Rauray leaving behind neutral ground except for arrival deployment at p1 where 9th/3rd resumes fight against KG Meyer.

Allies field mostly infantry in order to neutralize Schreck teams and prevent more tank losses.  Only two M-10's support, with order to stay further back.
Canadians launch a three pronged attack: M-10 and Rifle team takes p2 and finds enemy fire from p5. A group of infantry moves into positions surrounding p7 church, while a third group, with M-10 moves to p6.
M-10 gets fired upon while crossing road at p3 from Stug at p4 ... sends back one shot then thinks best to cross road to cover before StuG can reload.

Allied infantry stalls moving North getting hit from various enemy positions around p9. M-10 methodically sends HE to buildings allowing infantry to move forward.

Church at p7 is taken by infantry converging simultaneously, and enemy seen retreating North from p9 as action heats up there.

Two infantry teams get hit hard as they move North through buildings West side of road ... and M-10 in close support is knocked out by Schreck. Two other teams run through field from p7 towards p4. And at same time Rifle team and M-10 arrive at p5.
Choas erupts as Allied Cmd team enters p10 building from West and engages enemy in hand to hand combat ... p5 M-10 sights StuG but somehow StuG rotates and gets knock out shot first. Rifle team at p5 fires into p10 building, and remaining central group soldiers press into building beside StuG at p4.
p10 VL turns half Allied with less than 6 seconds remaining. German BG is routed.

Saved game inspection revealed Meyer was low on Battle Group Points, after fighting two previous hard fought battles. The result left the commander with choice of all infantry units or StuG and several less infantry teams.

33. Hermanville June 7, 15:00 - 185th/3rd Brit vs I./25/12 SS
German 88mm at p2 spotted quickly and destroyed.
Allies attack from arrival deployment area p1, fight hard ...and successfully gain ground up to p5, p6, and capture p4 VL.

Momentum waned sharply due to well positioned MG42's and infantry that formed a strong second line of defense. An Allied Armored Car at p6 helped even the odds, until a PzIV knocked it out from p7 ... followed by a flanking movement of Sherman at p8 which enabled a knock out side shot.
Second screenshot, of in game action, depicts this time of battle.

Further actions became careless and too aggressive: Infantry moved to p8, but were cut down quickly, leaving the Sherman exposed to a soon to come PzFaust counter attack which destroyed the Sherman.
A similar fate consumed an M-10 and Rifle team rounding the corner at p9 ... from a ambushing ATG in hedge at p10.

Brit infantry looked for cover by retreating to p5, some were KIA from onslaught of enemy fire.
Sherman at p3 set up defensive position in expectation of counter attack ... which came in force, as German infantry rushed across road and into buildings around p4. Germans gained the VL, while Allies desperately attempted to contain the counter attack.

Allies captured important ground, and got taught tough lesson during second phase of battle.

34. Rauray June 7, 15:00 - 7th/3rd Cdn vs 25/12 SS Div
Meeting engagement - Allies arrival deployment is center East, Germans - South West.

A vast, complex network of hedgerows, fields, and roadways prompted extra thought for movement and objectives. Canadians therefore sent scout teams ahead spread out and advancing simultaneously ... until enemy contact was made.
German infantry in p1 hedge traded fire with approaching Rifle team. Panzer at p2 sent suppression fire, but companion Bren Section was able to find a route behind cover, then flank and help destroy enemy infantry team.

Panzers at p3 and p4, along with infantry between in buildings, locked down the main road towards Brettville. Shermans moving in and out of cover at p5, p6 exchanged frontal shots with Panzers, while infantry and MG's had brief skirmishes.
Bren Section at p7 wiped out completely by defending infantry with MG42.

MG42's again demonstrate their lethal potential

35. Lingevres June 7, 15:00 - 231st/50th Div vs Pz.Aufkl.Abt 12/12 SS
Meeting engagement, German Armor Recon Battle Group enters at p1 ... Allies deploy at p2.

Allied intelligence reports large enemy Armor formation moving towards this area ... arrival within next day. Therefore, main objective ... secure ground North of river and prepare defensive positions to restrict enemy access across bridges.

Group of infantry moves quickly West to p3. Stuart, Flame tank, and Sherman open up on enemy infantry spotted at p5, as they approach p4 ... German infantry hit hard and seen retreating.
Rifle team scout South of p4 covering Armor's flank against possible AT infantry.

Arriving at p3, infantry engage enemy across road in p6 hedgerow. Stuart gets line of sight from p4 and together flush Germans from hedge ... they retreat West into buildings. Immediately infantry pursues across road to p6, Stuart heads North up road, and Flame tank follows.
Stuart blows up Half Track Inf Gun at p7, while Croc moves to p8 ... surrounding German infantry in building. Infantry assault clears building, then split West and South. South heading units with Croc destroy infantry holding VL at p8.

Meanwhile, combined force scout group heading South arrive at p9 crossroad area. Rifle team under fire from HT Gun in field at p10. Stuart and Sherman realize opportunity and quickly each take alternate routes to flank ... Light Tank aims first and gets knock out, with Sherman nearby and ready. Infantry lead way into hedge around Southern most VL, while tanks get back onto main road. Stuart destroys HT protecting VL, but Allied Rifle team wiped out by MG42 team ... Sherman and Stuart together destroy MG. Sherman sets out towards p11, knocks out an ambushing HT en route.

Flame tank and infantry from North West converge at p11 with intense fire from multiple directions. Flame tank stops short of road leading towards p1, seeing a waiting HT at West end of road. Position is good though to unleash fire into church across road which supports Rifle and Bren team attacking from North fields. Sherman cautiously moves closer to support.
Cmd team infiltrates orchard from North after crossing stream and captures p1 VL. Germans re position units to compensate causing confusion in their effort to defend p11 area.
German HT gained position on Flame tank and destroy it.
Cmd team at p1 suppressed and then destroyed by Flame Thrower.
Brit tank support was deciding factor during the intense infantry battles at p11 buildings.

Allies able to sweep through area capturing VL's due to advantageous fire power and several fortunate line of sight opportunities ... as well as, a couple of missed first shots from German Guns.

36. Tilly June 7, 15:00 - 69th/50th Div vs II./902/Lehr
Meeting engagement: Allies enter at p1, Germans at p2.
Brit infantry gets across to p4 in a hurry to find Germans moving into buildings there too, and thus a tough fight begins. A Stuart and Croc support action there, and a roaming StuG nailing infantry from cover West of p3.

German infantry at p6 forced to retreat as fire from p5, p6, and p4 overwhelm. Flame tank and Rifle team enter hedge at p9 and exchange fire with hidden p10 ATG. Gun hit but keeps firing as Croc backs out due to Schreck shot,  then moves towards p11 to clear MG embedded in hedge.

Another Stuart and two infantry teams advance to p8, but get stopped by MG42 across field. Stuart moves to p11 taking aim at p10 ATG, gets immobilized by Schreck. Flame tank moving along hedge gets knocked out by Schreck, but Brits keep control of p9, p11 hedgerow.

M-10 and Stuart accompanied by infantry attempt to force engagement with StuG, but clever maneuvering by German commander results in loss of M-10 ... Stuart with good position as battle ends.

37. Bavent June 7, 15:00 - 6th Air Landing/6th AB vs Pz.Aufkl.Abt 21/21 Div
6th Air Landing Battle Group takes over duties and brings much needed Light Tank support to the fight ... while German side deploys a Recon BG.

German infantry attack from p2, p3, p4 and send HE rounds from p1. AB hold up well initially, but re position when Half Tracks move along p4 road ... helping their infantry recapture p3 area.

Airborne counter attack with infantry moving into p8 buildings and two Light Tanks behind ... which trade shots with p9 HT Gun and SdKfz 232 2cm (heavy armored recon vehicle) at close range. Light Tanks back to cover to rethink positioning, but Bren team already moved into p9 hedge. Light Tank tried flanking on road but got destroyed by a waiting Sd.Kfz. 250/10 - 3.7cm waiting at p10. Another 250 variant (250/7) menaced infantry throughout the battle with mortar rounds, which also hit an ATG crew. German vehicles everywhere.

Rommels HQ
report from the german front....

superior german troops have stabilized a front line and stopped the allied advance. tough fighting with few A/T assets up to this point. no word from KG Meyer for the last few hours....fear he was destroyed fighting for the fatherland.
PZ Lehr starting to reinforce the front line BG's with strong armour support, and 12 SS tank units arriving also. 21 PZ armour units causing havoc at Bieville and Benouville, driving a wedge between allied AB units and supply, and leaving brit and Canadian BG's reeling and taking heavy armour losses.... the end is near for the AB Red Devils.
German heavy armour to arrive soon and punch thru to the sea.

PANZERS MARCHE!

38. Bieville June 8, 07:00 - 8th/3rd Cdn vs KG Oppeln 1./22/21 Div
Canadian rifle team scouts south at p1, finding no enemy tanks ... draws MG42 fire from p3 building. Sherman plows through hedge at p2 to support infantry, but unable to get line of sight past trees. PIAT team follows Sherman to p4 to engage PzIV at p5 ... other side of hedge.
Shots exchanged ... Sherman gets the knock out.

Other infantry attack p3 MG from side at p6 ... both Allied teams cut down. Sherman goes forward to take shot at 88mm ATG in p8 hedge from p7 ... round hits but doesn't destroy Gun. PzIV on road pursues Sherman at p9 ... gets kill while Sherman reloads.

M-10 drives to p6 to finish the 88, but misses first shot ... then blown up with 88mm round. Fire Fly was right behind M-10 though and knocked out the Gun.

Earlier version PzIV at p10 exchange rounds with Sherman advancing to p11. Sherman destroys the Panzer ... ends up immobilized on hedge, but stil in position to support infantry to recapture p10 VL.

Two PzIV's move down road at p12 with infantry clearing buildings ahead. p12 PIAT Group gets hit hard, surviving three retreat to West orchard. Second FF enters p13 cross road to sight p12 PzIV, but German tank in better position and gets first shot kill.

Allied infantry push West along central road, prompting one PzIV to leave p12 towards p14. PIAT crew in ambush get side shot kill with second shot.

39. Benouville June 8, 07:00 - 8th/3rd Cdn vs II./22/21 Div
Allies decide to hold back attack during this battle and set up to defend against German attempt to break through their lines.
Main objective, to keep exit VL to Bieville open (North East) ... in order to move reserve BG there next turn, so as to gain ground during deployment and link up with Allied territory on Bieville map.

Therefore, only small skirmishes occurred ... since Germans didn't launch a significant attack either.
Sherman heading West along Northern area found German infantry team behind aircraft and opened up ... survivors retreating for cover.
MG's and PzIV hammered buildings from central hedge area, but not advancing.
Allied Bren team scouting South around wall at far South West building complex ... completely wiped out quickly from heavily defended buildings.

Brit infantry attack enemy held building in wooded area. Sherman advances to hedge with supporting fire into building, having desired effect. PZIV counter attacks from Western hedge ... gets knocked out by 17 pdr ATG waiting in cover across field.
Allies take control of building after fierce hand to hand combat and Sherman following up.

40. Hermanville June 8, 07:00 - 185th/3rd Brit vs II./12/12 SS
Tank commanders see opportunity to get line of sight on PzIV simultaneously, and move forward to get shots. PzIV blows up M-10 first shot as it rounds hedge. Other M-10 has PzIV in its sights, but fails to get direct hit. PzIV swings, fires, and knocks it out too ... first shot.
Allies keep control of important VL as time runs down ... German infantry seen rushing forward to counter attack.

41. Rauray June 8, 07:00 - 7th/3rd Cdn vs 25/12 SS
Germans set up a line of defense along hedgerows outlining the numerous connecting small fields. Well placed MG's, quickly stopped Canadian infantry ... forcing them back and re positioning. When Allied tanks moved to support, they were hit with ATG fire at one location and enemy tanks at another.
Germans knocked out an M-10 and two Shermans ... and virtually no ground gained by the Canadian attack.

British able to keep strong Lehr BG contained for most part. Artillery hammered German infantry, blunting the sharp edge of their attack.
Allied tanks supported infantry and knocked out a Pz IV. Pz Schreck teams got at least two Allied tanks near end of battle, and a Tiger I brewed up a Sherman. Four British Armor lost.

43. Tilly June 8, 07:00 - 69th/50th vs II./902/Lehr
StuG gets near miss from 17 pdr round as battle begins ... wisely backs to cover before second shot loaded.
British infantry pinned in central area by MG 42 cross fire along with StuG support from further back. Both sides attempt several small attacks, but overall line tough to move either way.

Schreck brewed up a Sherman moving to support infantry in central buildings area.
Seems there is nowhere to go without fire from an MG 42 or a Schreck.

44. Bavent June 8, 07:00 - 6th AirLanding/6th AB vs II./125/21 Div
Germans determine to occupy North Eastern building and launch attacks South. Allies send Artillery and follow up with a counter attack.
Eventually two infantry teams get into house, but hit hard by HT's, MG's, and HE from several directions ... some KIA, others surrender.
AB light tank helps hold back Assault Gun in corner field ... and together play cat and mouse game with hedge and trees betweeen.  LT gets knocked out by 37mm HT by narrow line of sight further back along road.
Airborne attack also in the South towards West with small gains.
Really tough fighting

45. Ranville June 8, 07:00 - 5th/6th AB vs KG Luck 125/21 Div
Two German BG's move into Ranville from two directions in order to maximize deployment area.
Allied commander makes regrettable decision to place ATG's in Gun Pits surrounding German deployment and also put several infantry units near center of German deployment.
German MG's get into buildings and hedges ... are then able to pick off ATG crews. With Guns abandoned and center group infantry destroyed ... Germans move Armor, HT's, and infantry across field towards bridge VL. Remaining units overwhelmed ... and disband.

1st Special Service Battle Group will attack this map next turn ... and attempt to recapture the lost ground.

I am doing an overhaul of the small arms. in what detail did you look over the small arms in GJS 8 ? a bunch of values seem to be historically off and other seem to be random.

also in the weapons text there are some entries named open. what are those? are they obsolete entires?

Hi TWJunky,
A methodology was developed to help simulate small arms in a way that represents their expected combat effectiveness based on in game performance. Changes were made after GJS 6.0 ... and extensive play testing followed.
The data you see is intentional.

since you did extensice testing and tweaked the values:

No Jam or Break Quality, Heat Rate, Cool Rate

I am sure that you can explain to me what they do, because i did extensive testing myself and couldn´t get any differing results by temering with these values.

yes i am was aware of the discsription. I tried playing with those stats but i could get any overheating/ breaking of the weapon. I even dumped wepan durabilty to 0. but nothing happend, the mg 42 gunner team blew their 1250 rounds super fast because i also tweaked the aim and fire round from clip to 1. since you have more pratice with this maybe you could try it also and see if you can come up with better results. if it were possible to overheat/break a weapon, there would finaly be a drawback to high rate of fire weapons which in turn produce a lot of heat. so no more unrealistic buffing brens and low rpm weapons giving them more killing power with range damage modifieres. do you see what i am trying to get at here?

Hi,
I think a MG jamming should be a rare occurance...
and isn't a first choice method for balancing weapon types.

What is it that you are trying to accomplish?

#86: Re: GJS 8.0 AAR Author: TWJunky PostPosted: Sun Mar 26, 2017 1:29 pm

have you every shot an MG? I served in the austrian army (mandatory service :/). the personal carrier i was driving had a MG 3 mounted ontop. this weapon jammed on a regualr basis. every coupple of bursts it had to be manually reloaded and then was firing again. that wasn´t a long procedure but something like that does reduce your rate of fire.  so jaming is a thing. i recon that gets especially bad when temperature rise in and the internal metal parts start to expand, changging the dimensions
Regardless i dont think that these stats matters at all in game, as I said the i didnt get any results when temering with: No Jam or Break Quality, Heat Rate, Cool Rate. they look like dead stats to me.
since you have more experince than i do, maybe you can confirm by tryin it out yourself Smile?

I don't know if you did this already, but try the modified weapons with poor troops. In Stalingrad I get "repairing" lots on mounted and crew served weapons.

A lot can go wrong with machine guns whilst doing heavy duty... Ammo feeding mechanism problems, problems with the barrel overheating or obstructed chamber by torn off cartridge... Sometimes they can jam very heavily, you need to kick the weapon to unjam it. So when using an mg, you certainly will need to be prepared to fix any problem with the weapon. Inside vehicles it can be even more difficult to fix a problem since there is less space to operate.

And thx for this fine AAR.  Cool
