Wow. Cant stop reading about this news. This story has more twists than a Luna Park coaster.
Now that the US has belatedly grounded the planes the conspiracy theories are coming. Like Mitch McConnells wife is head of the FAA, so there is a political angle as well.

Talking points......

1) - Government regulation versus private deregulation. We know where the Republicans stand on this.
2) - Computer controlled planes vs pilot flown planes. Computers are scary, but proven to be safer. Ever watch Air Crash Investigation?
3) - Boeing vs the world. They waited too long to react, the rest of the world acted first leaving the US behind and looking bad.
4) - Engineering vs Profit. We can design and build a perfect airplane, but it would cost too much. There is always a compromise. We see this in the games industry every release!

Most important - We can argue over the details, but dont forget that 157 people died on Sunday  Crying or Very sad

I had to take a business trip right after they announced grounding & ticket showed I specifically had that model.  They swamped-out the plane for different model no delays, got lucky.

You were spot...profit was placed before life.  The sensor to help verify automated system controlling direction was additional charge.  So airline carriers naturally declined to pay.  Boeing may soon regret that decision as many Americans were among the dead.

The McConnell's trophy wife FAA puppet leader won't be able to save them

https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/companies/source-boeing-whistleblowers-report-737-max-problems-to-faa/ar-BBWkZJ1?ocid=spartandhp

Quote:
Among the complaints is a previously unreported issue involving damage to the wiring of the angle of attack sensor by a foreign object, according to the source.

Boeing has reportedly had previous issues with foreign object debris in its manufacturing process; The New York Times reported metal shavings were found near wiring of Boeing 787 Dreamliner planes, and the Air Force stopped deliveries of the Boeing KC-46 tanker after foreign object debris was found in some of the planes coming off the production line.

Other reports by the whistleblowers involve concerns about the MCAS control cut-out switches, which disengage the MCAS software, according to the source.

Reminds me some classic novels by Arthur Hailey, especially 'Wheels'

I dont think it is as simple as that. All machines are built to a profit / safety curve.
If you make it too cheap it will not be reliable. If you "gold plate" it with safety margins you wont be able to sell any.

But, kids toys are at one end of that curve and airplanes need to be at the other end!

One article recently talked about the complexity of the aircraft and that a late decision was made to make the single sensor a safety feature. If the original engineers knew it would be used for this they would have made it redundant.

I've seen this same thing happen many times in projects (Industrial automation) I've been involved with.

The ethical way to have factored-in the costs would have been to add as mandatory standard feature added to the overall price.  Instead of making it as optional feature.  Rather just factor it into the base price if lives depend on it.

Of course the wife of McConnell has not done a thing about it.  Her sister is on board of Bank of China and father owns Chinese-govt subsidized shipping company.  So much for conflict of interest laws.

I was shocked that in a room full of a couple hundred mostly senior engineers we were being told that we weren’t needed

BTW, don`t forget about Russian threat:

Quote:
Boeing has also expanded a design center in Moscow. At a meeting with a chief 787 engineer in 2008, one staffer complained about sending drawings back to a team in Russia 18 times before they understood that the smoke detectors needed to be connected to the electrical system, said Cynthia Cole, a former Boeing engineer who headed the engineers’ union from 2006 to 2010.

Typical of Big Corporate America to farm-out even critical development that lives depend on to slave labour and not even use U.S.-based company.  Re: smoke detectors - not sure they even bother to check those work, almost every flight I take the cabin reeks of exhaust fumes.  Too cheap to even make sure we breath safe levels of oxygen.

I already on dangerous flight on return home from business trip that almost didn't make it. They had to make emergency return back to runway only minutes after take-off.   So the weight was too heavy with fuel so soon after take-off, they had to dump aviation fuel over the ocean to reduce the weight before we could safely land.  Hope someone wasn't fishing below.

Saw the video of that terrible flight in Russia that caught on fire.  I heard that one too had to make emergency landing shortly after take-off but I don't think they dumped the fuel?  So was too heavy and possibly contributed to the fire.

Scheduled 7 hour flight suppose to on 737.  Airlines decided to ground 737's until November yet the ticket still shows 737.  What a cluster

Yes but no country in the world exists purely on capitalist system not even the USA.  We literally have a Socialist running for President but what we call Socialist in USA is what Europe would call Conservative.

The Soviet propaganda is kind of true but not every company is ran this way but definitely getting much worse the last 20 years or so.  We call this Crony Capitalism which is sheer corruption, profits aheads of lives.  To save a nickel they will cut corners on critical safety components or fire workers and outsource them with sweatshop immigrant workers.  Then to pretend they comply with US soil workers they just bring them onshore on Visa passport sponsor.

Boeing CEO just scapegoat for the Board and their executives to mask no accountability.  I'm not happy with Corporate America Boeing is just the tip of the iceberg.  Executive compensation has gone up over 1000% in last 40 years while average workers got only 12% more (adj for inflation).

And that is very disturbing statistic cited in the article.  To think that Weasel presiding over Boeing's worse scandal in history helped himself to $80M on way out...almost double the compensation funds paid to families of victims (of his ruthless greed).

Silence from Moscow Mitch's trophy wife.  She is suppose to be the head of the Transportation agency.  So predictable might as well go ahead and hire her already as the next CEO of Boeing.

I fly that flight every now and then to Murmansk.

and yes there is no problem with Superjet, there is a problem with pilot quality in Russia unfortunately...
