Then out of hasty desperation to build the urgently needed airstrip they had to use mass graves. The battle at least taught U.S. military some painful lessons about tactics and probably helped saved lives later knowing how many casualties would be sustained for future island offensives. And decision to "hop" or bypass some islands altogether to avoid such phyrric victories.
