What is a sand box format?

TBF is mod-friendly and open to sand boxing. Editing battles and maps is easily accomplished in the editors. Ops and camps are strung together with commented text files rather than created in a strat layer editor. Changes to unit structure, allowing access to more unit types in any given battle, are done in a spreadsheet according to the TBF workbook.

Curious what you mean by 'mess of a game'? After a rough launch, a year+ of continued development has polished TBF considerably. Steve has cranked out patches at a rate of more than one a month, 1.19 being the latest, so specific complaints will get considered. IMO, in my brief quarter century with the series, TBF's feature set blows classic CC away.

still not convinced , still cant get past the first day i viewed it , i would need to see some screen shots of the sand box , or a least have a free demo before i part with my cash !!
when they sell it for what its worth £5.00, maybe i will give it bash .
to much other stuff out there that is far better .

"...still cant get past the first day i viewed it..."

I interpret this to mean you were disappointed when you first "viewed" TBF screenshots. Unclear if those pics you saw were from an alpha years ago, or what. TBF was a mess at release but its dev, the very same Steve 'TheBlood!' McClaire who rose from the player ranks to code all the CC re-releases, has since given TBF a steady stream of updates.

The golden days of free game demos are long gone. However, you might take advantage of Steam's 'two hours of playtime' refund policy to see if you can get past the first day without TBFs new AI kicking too much shortbutt. Heavy metal enthusiasts might be disappointed at the lack of panzers in the first operation but they'll soon arrive, along with double-gunned M3 Grants and tin can M3 Stuarts.

Plenty of TBF sandbox examples on the Matrix/TBF forum if you care to look. Nomada_Firefox did a full Normandy mod. That in itself is evidence TBF can be sandboxed.
