They had been married a year...

Asako followed Tetsuo to Manchuria about one month before their kamikaze flight. Later, the invading Soviet Union assaulted and massacred Japanese women and children in the territory. Infuriated, Tetsuo and 10 other air unit members refused to surrender, and formed the Shinshu Fumetsu special attack corps.

"Upon learning about her husband's resolve, Asako probably begged Tetsuo to (take her with him), saying she'd rather charge and die with him, instead of being humiliated by the enemy," Toyoda speculates.

Seems war brings out the worst in some no matter which nationality....
