On January 20, 1942, Japanese Navy submarine I-124 found its final resting place 53 metres below the waves of the Beagle Gulf, north-west of Darwin.

Key points:
A 3D map of the sunken I-124 Japanese submarine off the NT coast has been completed
Researchers hope it will help solve long-standing questions about the vessel
The site, roughly 50 metres below the sea surface, is a war grave
It was struck by depth charges deployed by the Royal Australian Navy as the two sides competed for control of waters to Australia's north during World War II.

Quite a story with savagers trying to sell the wreck after the Australian Government gave them permission to do so...

Common sense prevailed and it is a designated war grave.... though one salvager threatened to blow it up... Shocked

In the meantime, I-124 also had arrived in the area and she fired a torpedo at Deloraine at 13:35.[4] Deloraine turned to starboard and the torpedo passed 10 feet (3 m) astern of her, broaching as it passed through her wake

It was very stupid move by japan sub commander. Bathurst-class corvette listed as had less than 3m draught...virtually impossible target to hit by early-war torpedoes. He just exposed his sub to hunters. No surprise, that no one RAN corvettes was sunk by japan submarines during whole war.
