Today is 5/1 - that's a communist holiday, if that means anything to anyone - maybe if you're obsessed with the eastern front. OK, just FYI! Very Happy

It's the 300th anniversary of the Treaty of Union today. Hence the change of avatar.

The May day holiday in England was first celebrated by the Romans whose goddess of fruit and flowers Flora was honoured on that day.

It was to a time of celebration of the coming of the light after the winter darkness to a lot of pagan religions. This continued in England, at any rate, throughout the middle ages, where various rites took place all over the country, including the tradition of May Queen where the prettist girl of the region would be crowned with a flower crown (much as the image of Flora once was) and presided over the celebrations and feasting. At the end of the day she would be carried around on the 'throne' by a group of eligable young men, one of which she would chose on the following day.

Needless to say all this frivolity for the lower classes was frowned upon by the strait-laced (in public) Victorians and the established church, who did their best to supress it in their usual caring manner.

So I guess adding the Communists to the mix of Paganism and liberation of the labouring classes must put the lid on it for the Holy Joes Laughing

Interesting how this tradition has remained with the world over the centuries.

Cheers
Ronson

Well... May Day is a holiday dozens of other places, too... I merely wanted to point out that Communists go crazy over it not as a celebration of spring, but to celebrate communism or some rubbish like that.

Hey man, Communism is not rubbish, and May the first is celebrated by the communists because the working class fought for it's rights, and communim displays it as the strenght and determination of unified people. And about communism, it's not, and it has never been bad, however people ruined the real Communist dream, equality, unity and wellfare. It's West propagenda that communist are evil, and repressive. But tell me something what is better, unbalance of finances like in capitalism (poor people, and those filthy rich) or equality. Did you know that Communists said: Work as hard as you can, and we'll give you as much as you need. Communst or not this is a great holiday, when workers shown the world how much they are worth.
