I suspect that which hardcoded explosions are chosen by the game engine may be determined by the blast size in the weapons.adb but haven't confimed that yet. Heavy mortars and artillery seem to use a sequence of 3 different sounds.
I've made up a test sound.sfx file to make identfying these a bit easier but it is too large to add as an attachment. If anyone is interested I could upload it, or send via e-mail.
