Greetings from the 29th ID,

In case you haven’t heard, the newest version of Darkest Hour: Europe ‘44-‘45 has just been released on Steam. As one of its largest communities, we’re happy to pronounce that it is the most realistic World War II first-person shooter on the market! We’re posting here to make sure you get the chance to try it out.

For those of you who haven’t tried it yet, Darkest Hour consists of:

• Realistic Infantry Combat
• Realistic Tank Warfare
• Massive 200 sq. km. Levels
• Para-dropping/Airborne landings
• Various Transport Vehicles/APCs
• Squad-based Combat & Proximity-based Communication
• Live the D-Day Invasion of several beaches
• 64 Player Server Capacity
• Controllable Artillery Strikes
• Amazing Graphics

There’s so much more. The new mouth-watering trailer speaks for itself – definitely check it out. We’ve also put together a short page on our own elaborating on these features.

Darkest Hour is built on the game Red Orchestra, which is a similar game between the Soviet and German armies. Darkest Hour is free, but in order to play it, you must have Red Orchestra installed. Normally Red Orchestra costs fifteen dollars through Steam, but it is on sale until Monday 15 June to promote the release of DH.

That means that if you get RO before Monday, it will only be $4.99 – you can then download DH through Steam (it’s free). As far as I’m concerned, five bucks for two games is one hell of a deal.

Just to be clear, we are not affiliated with the developers or Steam – we are a 140+ member realism unit who want to get the word out about the release because it’s a great game. We’ve been playing the earlier versions for a year now and we look forward to you guys joining the DH community.

So while it’s still on sale:

• Step 1. Watch the trailer: http://store.steampowered.com/app/900873/
• Step 2. Get Red Orchestra for $4.99: http://store.steampowered.com/app/1200/
• Step 3. Get Darkest Hour (free): http://store.steampowered.com/app/1280/

See you in Normandy!

Is RO (and now Darkest Hour) still a strictly online-only FPS or can you play solo with dumb bots also?

Yeah its multi only. Theres an SP mode where you can practice with some bots. I just spent the night playing... was alot of fun. Not as instantly crazy as Medal of Honor multiplayer though. More detailed and a bit slower with all the realism effects.

CSO_Talorgan, yes there is a map editor. It's the UnrealEd map editor, if you've ever used that.

Looks solid, I mean for 5$ looks great.

Got to admit that for any FPS playing online vs others is the way to go. For my Xbox 360 I have Call of Duty 3-5 and Halo 3 and on Exbox Live they are incredible fun.

Yeah, its not CC, but even with CC, playing vs others is the best. But even multiplayer CC is a drag unless everyone playing has a solid machien to play it on. With the 360 your all basically in the same boat so its very fast.

At first I was a little miffed because of all the kids that play and jerk around, but if you knwo good lobbies/people to play with, you are set.

So how is the online play for this game incidentally? Decent following? Hows the hosting?

Hi guys.
I have been playing RO + DH for about 1 month. Alot of fun.
Ok, there are the regular kiddies who go beserk and shoot anyone.
I think it would be great fun if we make a Close Combat team.
You have to be a CC member to join us!
With our superior tactics and team work I think we would be a tough match!
Most of the time the game play is, 1; throw a grenade real far
2;Start spraying the area in front of you with lead.
3: Do your kamkazi charge! killing 1 or 2 guys if your lucky!
4: 3 seconds later get shoot or blown away...as you hear your death scream!
I am sure if we do CC style of gameplay it would be really fun and effective!
Mooxe is already doing a site! It looks great.
We can't go wrong with a Mooxe site!
What do you guys think of a CC team on RO + DH?

Can it create large top-down images with no fish-eye effects in the corners? (The correct word for this may be "orthographic".)

I usually try and get the 30cal MG. On a few maps I have found some superb positions to mg from and rack of massive kills without being detected/killed. Its alot of fun.

There is a Darkest Hour server running right now on CCS, using new and beta maps only. There is a web interface to mix up the rotation. Currently, its empty, along with a pile of other public servers. If any DH or RO players out there want to manage it I can set that up, along with a RO server.

Eek, I don't know - I'll ask Theel to reply with that as he's our lead leveler

Did anyone get this? Does it include an editor?

Here is a link to a mod that includes Romanian voices which could be used in some of the Eastern Front CC mods maybe....

http://www.carpathiancrosses.com/

I downloaded the mod but could not open the sound files with any tool I currently have. Based on this link supposedly Unreal Tournament can extract the voice files from .uax sound files included in the mod;

You'll gather that I seek that mythical beast - the Close Combat map graphics editor.
