It can be complex, but after exploring the following programs and some trial & error, you should be able to figure this out:

I use these programs.

1) SFX Pack (use this to unpack the Sound.sfx file: in the process, a wave folder will appear that contains all the individual sounds (wave files from 0000 on up). The sounds are then changed or modified in this wave folder, then repacked. The completed file will appear in the window where Program files is found and will show as Out.sfx. The name of the Out.sfx file then is changed to Sound.sfx)

2) QClone (use this with the Weapon.txt or Weapon.adb files. Once the file is opened up through Qclone, you will be able to see the assigned wave file number attached to each weapon)

3) Goldwave (load wave files onto this program to modify and save sounds. there are many programs out there that can be used in the same manner as Goldwave, so you have options to this)

The basic steps would be:
a) Unpack the Sound.sfx with SFX Pack. This will make a wave folder in the LocalFX folder.
b) Open the Weapons.txt (or Weapons.adb) file with Qclone and scroll all the way to the right to find the 'Weapon Sound' column.
c) Modify the desired wave files (in the wave folder) with Goldwave or replace them with other wave files of your liking. You'll become familiar with which sounds are weapons, explosions, death, ambient, etc. All can be modified or changed.
d) Pack the wave folder up with the SFX Pack program and an Out.sfx file will appear inside the 'Program Files' window. Rename this Sound.sfx.
e) Backup your original Sound.sfx file and move the modified Sound.sfx file into the LocalFX folder.

Have someone show you how to make a plugin or 'D Switch' with your sound mod for convenient installs and uninstalls.
