Just re-installed Game after years away and I seem to remember you could force higher resolutions then 1024x768 by editing something ?:

Anyone remember how this is done ?

Yes....  its a registry key.  Edit as such:
                                                                                                                  Name        Type       Data
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft Games\Close Combat\2.00\ScreenX    REG_SZ   1280
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft Games\Close Combat\2.00\ScreenY    REG_SZ   1024

This is an example of 1280x1024 resolution.
