Hello and welcome.

Interesting problem. Hopefully all these get solved before I change from XP to W7 or Vista.

CC2, CC4 and CC5, CoI, CCTWAR and CCTLD works fine on my Win7 Ultimate x32 machine.
Can't install CC3 though...can't get past the install restriction screen.

I would think they can be persuaded to work, if not without some gremlins.  I am running Cross of Iron on Win7 with no problems at all.  Compatibility Mode is XP SP2 and run as Admin.

I have got CCIV to work using the Compatibility Troubleshooter, and accepting it's recommendations.  The Game loads and plays fine, but crashes on Exit.   Minor inconvenience.

The Videos can screw things up when loading some CC.  Launch CC with the [Ctrl] key held down, and it will take you straight to the Options Dialog.  Switch off the Videos.  See if that gets you a bit further...

Just installed CCIII on my Win7 Box.  Run the cc3setup.exe program in XP SP2 Compatibility.  Installation completed with no gremlins.

Run the cc3.exe in XP SP2 Compatibility, and the Game runs fine, with the same issue as CCIV, that is crashes on Exit, though Win7 traps it and tells you it's looking for a solution, which there probably isn't.

I have found the Compatibility Troubleshooter to be surprsingly effective.  Look for it in the Right-Click Menu when selecting a program to launch.

When you launch the Game, go straight to the 'Options' Dialog (F8 key) and switch off Video (if it isn't already).  Alternative is to launch CC holding the [Ctrl] Key down as this should take you straight to the Options Dialog.

Make sure you are running the program in Administrator Mode.

Also, Right Click on the cc3.exe file and select Compatibility Troubleshooter and follow the prompts.  Accept it's first recommendations and see if that helps.

Another thing you might try is changing the Computer's Graphics to 16bit colour (as it's probably defaulted to 32bit).  CC runs in 16bit, and changes the resolution for the purpose which is fine with Win95/98 which it was developed for.  I know it can cause problems in certain situations.  It can be a pain if you have to switch colour modes every time to start and finish playing, but if that's the way it works, don't knock it  Wink

Windows 7 (or Vista) does not like to let any program work in full screen (as opposed to a maximised Window), so any program that wants full screen control is likely to have issues.  I think Win7/Vista is much fussier than previous releases of Windows about this.

As I said, I ran the Compatibility Troubleshooter on CCIII (cc3.exe) and let it make the settings, which worked.  The only issue being when exiting the program, Windows traps an error (probably a GPF of some sort) and tells you that it is not responding, when you can then close it.  I haven't found it to have any negative effects on the game in any other ways.  I don't get that with CoI, just CCIII.

I think CoI is a better version of CCIII.  For a newcomer, I would say don't bother with CCIII at all, just get CoI.  You can still play the classic CCIII Grand Campaign(s), Operations(s), and Battle(s) anyway, and you get an extra Campaign ceated for CoI which I think is excellent.  Read the Operation and Battle Briefings from battle to battle!.  The AI is better in as much as it forces you to be more cohesive with the way you command your Force.  It is debatable whther the Tactical AI is any better.  Probably not much on the whole, but I think it is an improvement.

CC3/CoI is fairly unique out of all the Series in the way it allows you a far more initimate experience with your Battle Group.  Do you still have ANY of the original force which set out in 1941 at the end in 1945?  It can be hard enough getting them to last an Operation sometimes...  This is one of the reasons it is my favourite, quite apart from the excellent Custom Battle creator (Scenario Editor), providing limitless 'what if's' and just messing about if the fancy takes you.  Ever lined up 15 Tiger II's against 15 JSII's on on eof hte open Kursk Maps and let them slug it out?  Who normally wins do you think?  It was not quite what I expected, and the results are pretty consistant.

Normally done using the utility DXDIAG.exe which can be launched from the 'Run' option in the Start Menu.  If your Win7 doesn't show this, change the Properties of the Start Menu so that it does.  Also, ATI usually has some Control Panel which you could look at to tweak Graphic Settings.

Before changing any Acceleration Settings, you might try disabling DirectDraw and see if that helps.

p.s. Look in the Event Logs to see if anything useful has been logged there.  If an Application hangs or crashes, there should be something logged.  It may or may not prove useful, but anything that helps us identify why they will not run on your System while it does on ours would be useful.

The Blue Screen means (99.9%) that there is an issue with a Driver.  Make sure that all your Drivers are up to date, especially the Graphics, as this is probably the most likely source of the problem.

Can you make a note of the hex strings shown on the Blue Screen?  i.e. the 0x00000000 or similar, as they can sometimes be used with the MS Knowledge Base to identify specific issues.

Can you get into the Game Options at all?  For example, it might help to set the resolution in the Game to the same as the Desktop, as this would prevent the game from trying to change the PC's resolution which could be causing the failure.

Clutching at straws a bit, but if we hammer enough possibilities, we might just crack it.

p.s. those Dumps are unlikley to be very helpful except to an MS tech.  You may get better Intel from the Event Logs if you know where they are.  They are part of the Admin Tools accessed from the Control Panel as I recall (sorry, I am on my XP box at the moment).

Just checked on my Win7 box, and the Event Viewer is available from the Administrative Tools in Control Panel.  Look in the Windows Logs for Application and find any entries marked as Error.  For example, my CCIII crashes on Exit and there is an entry that shows:

Log Name:      Application
Source:        Application Error
Date:          21/04/2010 01:10:38

Faulting module name: CC3.Exe, version: 3.98.12.902, time stamp: 0x366edb3b

Amongst other stuff, although with me, CC3.exe does not Blue Screen.  As it is not a show stopper for me, I have not bothered to try and research this in more detail, but with you, it is rather more severe, so is maybe worth more persistence.

Checkout Schreckens Link above.  'Cannot access surface for lock' is not an uncommon problem especially with older CC's on newer PC systems.  However, I haven't heard of anyone not being able to fix it, so I think (X fingers) you are only moments away from playing the game at last!

Disabling DirectDraw should solve this.  Please double check.

Bizarre...  How did you get 2 different DXDIAG Diagnostics to appear?  That indicates to me that there are issues with your Graphics Drivers.

It looks like you are using the Microsoft supplied ATI Drivers.  I recommend you use the ATI Catalyst Drivers:

Checkout www.ati.com

Here is the Catalyst Driver (assuming you have the 32 bit edition of Win7):

http://support.amd.com/us/psearch/Pages/psearch.aspx?type=2.4.1&product=2.4.1.3.2&contentType=GPU+Download+Detail&ostype=Windows+7+-+32-Bit+Edition&keywords=&items=20

This is the 64bit Driver:

http://support.amd.com/us/psearch/Pages/psearch.aspx?type=2.4.1&product=2.4.1.3.2&contentType=GPU+Download+Detail&ostype=Windows+7+-+64-Bit+Edition&keywords=&items=20

I also found this related to your Adapter, but would be cautious about applying it unless all else fails:

Generally, working with the Microsoft supplied Drivers is a good idea, because they have been tested with the OS, but they can be a bit old.

Also make sure you have ALL the Microsoft Critical updates applied and the latest DirectX (unless the Graphics Drivers state otherwise).
