Was looking for some intel on KG Krafft at Arnhem when I found this:

"...but also had its own integral HQ Defence Platoon, Anti-Tank Section, Flamethrower section, 2 x reconnaissance sections, a Heavy Mortar section and a Trench Mortar."
Source: http://www.defendingarnhem.com/SS-Pz-Gr-AuE-Btl-16.htm

-What the h**l is a "Trench Mortar"?!?  Confused
Been searching info for hours today, it can't be a 5cm mörser (Wouldn't been mentioned then, the site didn't even mention the number of 37mm PaKs in the Kampfgruppe.) Is it one of the monsters here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:World_War_II_German_mortars ?

Pleezzzz help!  Wink

A trench mortar normally means light mortar, the name comes from its use in the trenches in WWI. Just google trench mortar.

Google it yesterday, before posting.  Confused
-If I didn't missed something, all I found was references to mortars in general.

I'm on the same track as you papa_whiskey, it should be a light mortar, but why mention a 5cm leGrW 36 when;
A) they had a section of (four) 12cm GrW 42 and probably a platoon of (six) 8cm sGrW 34 (since they had a heavy company these 81mm mortars should be precent)
B) they don't mention the access to or numbers of 37mm PaK 36

I think it's something quite a bit heavier than a 50mm guys.

Have a look at the 17th Sept log entry about para 7 starting with "as the 9th  Company". It specifically talks about the Bns' mixed mortar section and then specifically speaks of "the Hvy Trench Mortar". Given that the regular mortars are not referred to as "trench" mortars and a 50 mm is anything but heavy I think it must have been a WW 1 leftover put back into service. It also refers to the Hvy Trench mortar bombs ripping into the 3rd paras - not quite how most writers describe light mortar fire. It is possible it was one of the monsters though 7A_Woulf.

I found of mention of it in "A Bridge to Far" (C. Ryan), after a translation from Swedish it should be:
"...a multi-barrel rocket-launcher who shot oversized mortar shells...", Ryan had not been able to confirm the use of this weapon, but according to Krafft he had several of the four examples of this weapon.

Any idea someone? I need to let the 'poor' Jerrys beat the Paras in Hoogley's mod...  Wink
