hello everyone

I am currently in the process of doing a Let's Play of Close Combat 5 Battle of Berlin on youtube.  I am having a real blast playing the game and creating videos of my progress on that difficult mod.

I wanted to share my channel for those interested in watching as I continue my campaign, and hopefully survive until May 2, 1945!

http://www.youtube.com/user/CloseCombat5

There you will find all the videos.  I will be posting more as I continue to play.  Any comments/suggestions are appreciated.

hope you enjoy my channel and have fun watching the videos

thanks

Amusing, i only had time to watch part 15(random choice) as of this post. Pretty optimistic placing of your halftracks there, lucky the king tiger came through for ya   Very Happy

If you want to see weapon penetration possibilities(you mentioned the tiger not coming under rocket attack) you could load a test game as the opposition vs a king tiger group(create a battle in the editor) then mouse over inbattle...as you know green on tank means killable, black cant hurt it...or atleast the AI wont target a black cursor unit

One thing im really excessive about is checking each units LOS\firing abilities pre battle...understanding elevations in this game is a PITA so you have to hold down right click on terrain to get a elevation number...not very intuitive(am i telling you what you know? probably, but anyway)

Thanks!

Yup, I pay attention to EVERYTHING.  Especially with the way I'm playing this mod.  Like I mention in the videos, I've added VetMod 3.5 by Salhexe and also the 03 registry change to Path folder.  This makes an already difficult mod almost IMPOSSIBLE....heheh.  But I am having an awesome time playing it!!  A great challenge!

When I preposition, I always take into account factors like: Cover, Ammo, Elevation, Escape Routes, Officer Rank etc etc.  For Battle of Berlin you definitely have to pay attention to all the details if you hope to last till May 2, 1945.

For those interested, the campaign has reached a critical point!  I'm posting 2 sample videos so you can get a taste of how fun/crazy the battle is.  I am continually uploading more, so stay tuned!

Thanks for watching guys, and hope you enjoy my Battle of Berlin campaign!

Thanks for your vetmod Salhexe!

Yes, before I started my current Grand Campaign, I installed your vetmod.  So I have been using it since the beginning!

You have done an amazing job! This is without a doubt the most ridiculous, difficult and yet enjoyable mod I've ever played!  Btw, in all my youtube videos, in the description, I give you credit for your vetmod Smile Did you see that?

Wow, you made it all the way to May 2?  That is incredible.  I hope to survive also! :)

Again, to those interested, keep checking this thread and also my youtube channel.  I play this mod daily, and will be updating and uploading videos as much as possible.

Thanks and as always, any play suggestions or tips or random comments on my grand campaign are welcome!

A quick update.

I wanted to let everyone know that I've been playing and uploading videos at a furious pace :)

It is April 21, 1945 and I am doing some serious preparation in anticipation of the coming Soviet onslaught into the heart of Berlin.  In the link below, I provide an update regarding the current status of the campaign.  Again, tons of videos being uploaded...so stay tuned!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5fZBMd-NsKQ

Down with the Communist scum! :)

**EDIT** Another day has come upon us.  Below is the status as of April 22, 1945 after heavy losses and fighting in Autobahn East.  The numbers are deceiving.  Even though I've killed more than twice the number of men I've lost, the Soviets continue to push and now have me almost surrounded.

The situation is desperate, but men of courage are born out of such situations.  To Victory!!!

The Soviets have entered Berlin!  Noooooooooo!

For the first time ever, they managed to enter Berlin proper, but they'll pay for every inch of the city they take.  In Dahlem we encountered some of the bloodiest and most inhuman fighting yet.  For now, we came out victorious and killed off the Soviet scum.  I curse the Soviets and the day they were born!  Mad

Again, I've uploaded a bunch more videos.  Below is the link to the latest video showing the street fighting occurring in Dahlem on April 22, 1945.  I managed to defend fairly well.  The Soviets will regret ever stepping foot in Germany!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q9UxsT1rlpI

And an image showing the final results.  The battle continues and the videos will keep coming, so stay tuned!

I said this because I was surprised by the loss of two tanks in the battle that you posted.
I usually have sacrificed my tanks outside the city where I had more chance of eliminating Soviet tanks.
In the city are not very useful because it is easier to stop.

Yup, BoB is incredible.  The CC5 community has definitely produced incredible mods over the years.  I can't wait to play some others!

And now back to the battlefield and kicking some Soviet butt!

hi buuface!  Yeah, played some H2H a long time ago.  I'll probably try it again at some point, but for now, I'm really enjoying getting my butt kicked playing these mods(with the additional vetmods on top).

If you haven't tried the vetmods yourself, I suggest giving them a go.  They pack quite a punch! Smile

hey guys!!

I'm back with another update.  From now on, I thought it would be interesting to post updates in the form of diary entries from different soldiers across the front.  Below is my first try at writing these, hope it's decent!

April 23, 1945

The Soviets have us completely surrounded.  We received word today that the 391 Sicherungs Div in Freienwalde willl in all likelyhood withdraw towards Spandau.  This will make the defense of northern Berlin extremely difficult.

The moral of the men has reached a new low.  Somehow, we had held out hope of repelling the Soviets, but I think we all realize the end is near.  What shape or form the end will take, we do not know.  But with every passing hour we feel the darkness approaching.

Last night, I had a dream.  It's strange, but I don't think I've dreamed in a long time.  I saw mama with a bucket of water down by the old village well.  She had a sad expression on her face.  I went to grab her, but she turned and walked away.  I wonder where mama and papa are right now.  If I ever see them again, will they recognize me?  Will they still love me?  I'm not the same person I used to be.  So many things have changed.

I can't think anymore.  I can't eat anymore.  I can't sleep anymore.  When I close my eyes or when I try to think about the better days of yesterday, all I hear are explosions.  The sound of artillery guns, mortars, and tank shells.  These are my existence now.  I hope this all ends soon.  I don't think I can take it much more.

Mama and Papa...if you still remember me, and if I am still your son despite all this madness, know that I always loved you.  I joined the army for you, I fought for you, and if I die, I die for you.

love always
Oldekop

So I've uploaded the latest campaign update video for April 23, 1945.  The link is below.  As Oldekop mentioned, things are not going well but we will continue fighting until the last man!!!  Again, stay tuned to this thread and my youtube channel as I update almost daily and new material is constantly being posted.

thanks to everyone who's watched and enjoyed my videos!  I appreciate all the kind words you guys have left me!

Very Happy

Hi Lost Temple.

I have enjoyed watching your videos and eccpecially like your commentaries?

Now that it seems your campaign is almost finished, which mods do you intent to try next?

If you are looking for a challange agaisnt the AI opponent, I reccomend playing the stalingrad trilogy as i believe they are also very challanging for the german player.

If you are looking for a human opponent, which will bring a whole new different kind of challange, I would recommend Utah or GJS as they are well developed and well balanced for multiplayer and are also the most common mods played online therefor it will be easier for you to find a regular opponent for these mods.

Good luck

@buuface
thank you for your kind words.  I'm glad you've enjoyed my videos!
well, the campaign is NOT over yet...heheh.  I still believe, maybe foolishly, that I'm going to make it to May 2!

I'm not sure what I'll do in the future, but I do have big plans for my channel.  I do know that at some point, I would like to document a H2H campaign.  But at the same time, there are soo many mods I would like to document before that also!  Yes, the Stalingrad trilogy is definitely high on my list.  I haven't seen vetmods for SDK or SOC, so I really hope Salhexe makes some.  There are many theaters that interest me, so I've begun my initial research so I can choose another badass/fun/difficult mod to play.  Call me a sadist, but I've enjoyed getting my butt kicked on BoB.  So for my next one, I want to feel that same intensity and difficulty Smile  There are already a few mods that stick out from the rest.

@yuma
thank you as well!!!

Always afraid of what people will think of my writing, but good to know at least one person found it interesting! :)

To everyone who's been following this thread or my channel, I want to let you know that April 23, 1945 has seen some of the most insane and entertaining fights yet!  Seriously, it's getting ridiculous!  I uploaded 3 videos yesterday which give you a taste of the chaos and total carnage, but tomorrow I will upload 2 videos that will blow your minds away!

:)

hey guys!

Sorry for the delay, I've been playing continuously and recording videos, but I haven't had a chance to upload until today :)

As promised, I have uploaded 2 of my most intense and favorite battles up to this point.  Be sure to check them out!  Things are getting bloodier and messy!!!...heheh.  I am having a blast killing russians!  Laughing

Here is Part 44:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6U9RQ3Ndvdg

And Part 45:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U3Fa5zBQWTA

I will be back with a soldier diary entry once it turns April 24, 1945.  I've also narrowed the list of mods I am considering for next my Grand Campaign.  I will definitely be playing one that has salhexe's vetmod for it....and hopefully next time....I also have some fuel for my vehicles!..haha.

ok...my German troops need me back on the battlefield....so I have to go....but stay tuned for more!!

Hello everyone,

I just wanted to give a campaign status update.  The following is the state of the campaign as of April 24, 1945 after the massacre at Moabit.   heheh, yes it was a genocide.  I suffered some losses, but I think I killed enough Russians to make Stalin proud.  We all know he liked to kill his own people  Very Happy

#32: Re: Close Combat Battle of Berlin game footage (Let's Play) Author: LostTemple PostPosted: Thu Feb 17, 2011 5:10 am

And now for a diary/letter entry.  This time from a soldier on the front lines in the northern sector of Moabit.

April 24, 1945

They killed Kuhl yesterday.  Heinz came up and told me a sniper killed him.  I tried to run to see the body, but Heinz grabbed my shoulder and stopped me.  He said there was no point.  I couldn't believe it.  Even now it seems like some cruel lie.  He was the only thing left for me.  The only friend I had.  Nothing matters now.  Nothing.

We expected the Russian advance across the bridge.  Like hyenas at a carcass, they came right on time.  God I wish they would just kill me already.  I want to die out of this nightmare.  And would my death even mean anything.  Will anyone cry for me?  Will anyone remember me?  No.  No they wouldn't.  But it doesn't matter anyway.  I died yesterday with Kuhl.

We can't hold them much longer.  The collapse of this sector is imminent.  The bridge will be theirs, and this entire city also soon enough.  I was going to share this with Heinz last night.  We were huddled around a small fire and I was about to open my mouth when he said "Don't say it".  I think he knew what I was thinking.  Was he thinking it also? Am I the only one who feels defeated? Am I a coward? I love my country.  I love my people.  But I think I've had just about enough of all this.

These may be my last thoughts.  These may be my last words.  And if they are, I will end simply with this: My name is Fendler.  I was a good man.  A decent man.  I was interesting once you got to know me.  And if you ever needed anything, I tried my best to help you. Until we meet again.

Yours truly
-Fendler

A small update.  I wanted to let everyone know that I've purchased a new microphone.  The old one was starting to have some issues.

Anyway, just to make sure no part of the campaign is lost, I will be continuing uploading videos once my new microphone arrives.  It should be here in 2 or 3 days.

hey guys

some bad news and some good news.

bad news is i had an accident and suffered a fracture of my left elbow.  the pain has left my arm basically useless.  i decided against having it placed in a cast due to some potential long term motion reduction issues.  i definitely dont want to lose any motion in my arm.

good news is i promise to finish my battle of berlin campaign.  it might be more difficult playing with just one arm....but i intend to forge ahead.  so dont forget to check my channel for more videos.

sorry to any vewers out there.  i was definitely feeling a bit down because of my injury.  the pain is excrutiating, and i haven't been able to sleep the last few nights.  but i believe things happen for a reason, and we all just have to make the best of it

thanks again

happy to hear you're enjoying my videos.  I'm absolutely loving this mod and the current campaign I'm playing.  I've come a long way with my boys and my soldiers are performing admirably.  We still have a long ways to go however, so we have to stay positive!

Also wanted to give an update.

We are approaching April 25 VERY soon and things are going from bad to worse.  Check out the latest video(link is below) for some of the heaviest and aggressive fighting.  The Russians are placing IMMENSE pressure on my troops, and we may have finally reached a critical point!

Things are getting outrageous....heheh.  If you haven't seen the previous videos, make sure you watch those first so you get an idea of the state of the campaign.  It'll help you understand the insanity that's about to come!!

hey general_solomon,

thanks for following the videos on my channel.

hmmm...I am already thinking of what mod to do next.  I have several ideas, so we will see which one I ultimately choose.

Also, I don't have CC3, but either way, I want to stick with Close Combat 5 Invasion of Normandy for a while.  It has a lot of mods, so I get the chance to fight almost anywhere in the world, and that makes it the most interesting for me.

:)

sounds good, what about the stalingrad trilogy? i believe it is called stalingrad , stalingrad der kessal  and stalingrad der kessal (something something). these are cc5 mods so it will be very interesting now that your a seasoned commander.

this would be great to see how you do as the Germans.

by the way i am only on the 20 video for the berlin campaign. i'll tell you, its better than whats out there on crap tv.

so glad you recorded every battle.

@general_solomon.  Yeah,  Stalingrad is definitely a mod I want to check out.  I played Stalingrad Der Kessel for a bit a long time ago, but never finished it.  It was also a very painful mod....heheh.

I've shortened the list of potential mods to about 3 or 4.  But the other thing I'm considering is doing a H2H against someone.  I guess what I'm trying to say is....I haven't made up my mind yet in which direction to go   Laughing And honestly, right now I'm just trying to concentrate on surviving Battle of Berlin  Very Happy

The arm's doing great.  Thanks!  I've been doing a lot of physical therapy, so that helps a lot.  The pain is almost all gone, and in fact, I've been using my left arm now while playing for the last few days

If I could only make the pain of those 120mm heavy Soviet mortars go away, that would be even better!   Very Happy

all you have to do is bait them to use on expendable troops. in your situation this may not be anyone but they unusually will have around 3 available to them.

this way they will not call them on the troops you absolutely need to keep.

What's next?  More Close Combat of course Smile  Still deciding which mod to tackle...

Also....once again...thanks to everyone keeping up with my Battle of Berlin campaign videos.  There are tons of videos...and I really wanted to do the first highly documented campaign in Close Combat history....so that is why I am showing you guys everything from beginning to end.  I've gotten a lot of positive feedback....so I'm happy many of you are enjoying my youtube channel.

I also wanted to provide an update right before we move onto April 29, 1945.  The image below shows the carnage, devastation, and absolute hellishness as of April 28, 1945.  As you can see, we are making the Soviet pigs pay for every inch of Berlin :)

If you've missed out on any videos....now would be a good chance to join my journey.  We're moving on to the final chapters of the campaign....and I anticipate things quickly approaching their conclusion.

As always....stay tuned to my channel for continuous updates and thanks for watching!

hey guys!!!

I'm back with a short update.  I've been having an absolute blast playing the Battle of Berlin campaign.  We have officially made it to May 1, 1945....which means we are less than 24 hours away from reaching our date with destiny!!!

And let me tell you....things could not be anymore critical and nightmarish.  We are down to only two maps: Moabit and the Reichstag.  Furthermore, we're out of men and fighting with our last remaining loyal group of hardcore German warriors.

After months of playing....it is incredible that it's all come down to this.  We are soooo close, but now the hardest part comes.
Will we survive? Will we reach May 2? Will my men live?  All these questions will be answered soon enough!

Stay tuned because the next videos are ones that you DO NOT want to miss!!

thanks again for watching...and I'll see you in Berlin

:)

hey fellas,

The Battle for Berlin is over!!!  I had an amazing time playing this mod along with the Vetmod 3.5.  It was an absolutely thrilling ride from start to finish.

I started playing my Battle of Berlin campaign back in December of 2010.  In fact, I uploaded my first video on December 15, 2010.  That means I played for a total duration of over 6 months!!!  Wow!  Who knew it would take sooo long to conclude the campaign.  But it was all worth it because in those 6 months, it became almost part of my daily routine.  I think I played almost everyday day for about 1 to 2 hours.  A lengthy campaign, but overall, one that I immensely enjoyed playing.

I also want to say THANK YOU to everyone who watched and followed along.  I hope you guys enjoyed the adventure we shared together, and I also really appreciate all the comments and feedback I received.  It feels  good to know the CC5 community is still alive and going strong.

I want to share below a snapshot of the campaigns final summary.  As you can see, it was a bloody affair, but I'm really proud and happy with my gameplay and the results.  I made those Soviet Communist Pigs pay for stepping foot inside Germany, and I achieved a 2:1 ratio in both KIA and WIA.

As you can see also from the picture, GERMANY WAS VICTORIOUS! I managed to hold Moabit up until May 2, 1945, so I'm really pleased with that.  I can't tell you how many times I feared total failure was upon us, but my trusty German soldiers held strong and in the end, we were able to declare victory.

Well guys, thanks again for watching.  I'll definitely be back with another Close Combat 5 mod campaign, but after playing continuously for 6 months straight, I need a little break...hehehe.  But stay tuned because more is coming up!

thanks! and see you on the battlefield!
