The World at War (1973–74)

http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrqf2vF5m-vmAVfndj0zWrpIbNVC_y5_p

Narrated by Laurence Olivier and first broadcast in 1973 when memories of the Second World War were still clear in people's minds and the war's veterans numerous, over 26 episodes this unique series assembled these recollections, together with archive footage, to create one of the most powerful and successful historical documentaries ever seen. The voices of those that fought, worked or watched during the war gave each episode a vivid sense of what it was like to be there and was the hallmark of the series.

Baker Boys, just screened on ABC here in OZ. Pretty down to earth on the mental state of troops during and after deployment. Which incedently is a staggering 14 months for US troops

In the final credits it stated that 5000 troops had lost their lives in IRAQ & Afghanistan.

More than this number have taken their own lives since returning to the US after deployment

That is a shocking statistic.

Anybody know of any documentaries of, say, World War 2 that would look at the war from an individual soldiers point of view? There are many good autobiographies of the war written by soldiers but I can't think of any good documentaries about these soldiers.

I know the overall history of WW 2 quite well so I'm not that interested in these "History of World War 2" - type things.

Good job on this Brake.   War of the Century is my favorite.  Commanders at War series is very good for a television series - really got into the specific details of strategies.

I am interested in view the Russian documentary Dima told you about.  Also wondering if the Germans or Japanese produced much?

not sure if its been mentioned already. (my dialup connection is shocking when it comes to loading all these jpgs)

i just got 'World War II in colour 4dvd set.
670mins into 13 chapters.

1. The Gathering Storm
2. Lightning War
3. Britain at Bay
4. Hitler Strikes East
5. Red Sun Rampant
6. The Mediterranean and North Africa
7. Turning the Tide
8. The Soviet Steamroller
9. Overlord
10. Closing the Ring

13. Victory in The Pacific

rare and unseen footage from the air/land/sea including pretty much every main battle and it looks at it from every sides angle. (mainly brit, usa, nazi, iti, red, jap but does also mention a little bit on other countries involved)

link here: http://www.yourdiscovery.com/web/world-war-2/ww2-in-colour-hd/

i must say watching the beautiful monastery at cassino get bombed was quite something.
i also was surprised to learn that at the time of the normandy landing, hitler was sleeping and wasnt to be disturbed so he didnt find out for some hours after but he wasnt too alarmed and didnt think much of it at all.

In Holland a new documentary is being released in a few weeks, "A heath too far" (Een hei te ver), about Dropzone Y (Ginkel Heath) during Market Garden, and why this drpp was doomed from the start (even before).
Looking forward to a broadcast on national television.

A translation thru Google:

A heath too far
Every year in September, on the Ginkel Heath in Ede, the spectacular commemoration of Operation Market-Garden in September 1944. But why here? And what has been written in that day in September is actually played.

The documentary "A heath too far" tells the story of the first day of Operation Market-Garden. Ginkel Heath was the landing area for the 4th Parachute Brigade on September 18, 1944 or the second day of operation, landed. The moor was on the 17th and September 18th will be defended against German counterattacks. That task was a battalion Scots, the 7th KOSB themselves with gliders on September 17 had landed near Wolfheze. Soon after the Scots had their positions taken on the moor, the German counterattacks. These were executed with varying success by a Dutch battalion of SS men from Amersfoort. If known, for the first time the story of the Dutch SS battalion told using original archive materials.

At the time of the landings on the 18th was an important part of heather, around the current restaurant Tok 'Auntie' in the hands of the Germans. The first task of the paratroopers was also opposition to the clean up.

Then after they left the English first spot had come up a new plan to advance to Arnhem. On September 19th the march was stuck in the woods around the Johannahoeve. It was already clear that the operation encountered many difficulties. With many Meit enabled the Scots and the English managed to the landing of the gliders of the Polish brigade in the Johannahoeve to succeed. The march finally ended around Hartenstein in Oosterbeek. It has never been in Arnhem.

The documentary is based on several books and records that are otherwise a diverse and sometimes contradictory picture. We used images of original while some parts are re-enacted, both in the surrounding areas, as well as the Ginkel Heath in England. The story is largely told by veterans and eyewitnesses.

A major advantage is that the current sites are largely still hove exactly like a small 70 years ago. Various buildings have hardly changed. The boards Wambuis, Aunt Tok and Long Mountain, Table Mountain, The Johannahoeve and the `White House 'in Oosterbeek, after seeing the movie first and foremost historical sites. This certainly applies to the fold on the Ginkel in the first hours of the landings served as an emergency hospital.

A (not so spectacular) trailer:

I am in the process of writing an article about "a Europe-wide Day of Remembrance for the victims of all totalitarian and authoritarian regimes" with the special emphasis on the date (23 August) that I consider to be a malicious implication by those [countries] directly responsible for not stopping Hitler during several years when they had a chance to do it...

Recently I bumped into some Russian documentary on that topic, with a few declassified diplomatic and/or ministry of interior documents that would be very helpful. The problem is that I missed the first half of the film, and teletext (of course) wasn't working that very moment.

It was aired on Viasat History and I think that it's title had something to do with "Stalin stopping Hitler". Can anyone help? The exact name would be of great help, not to mention some torrent or streaming site  Very Happy

Just scored the WWII Essential Collection documentary series from Borders liquidation sale.  List price is $150...I paid only $64.
It has complete DVD set for World at War, Victory at Sea and Century of Warfare.

You can really get some bargains still at Borders but they are down to the last of inventories.

I sometimes wonder what the leaders thought, when they pronounced war against Germany in those early days, knowing that at that moment they would struggle to produce an army to match the threat...

recently have read some of General Beaufre memoirs, who was captain then and part of the French mission to Moscow in August 1939, and he clearly states that the Anglo-French mission was not in position for a solid treaty with USSR.
In August he was also sent to Warsaw to help persuade the Polish allowing the Red Army to help them - was rejected by the Polish as they thought they could manage that themselves with a help of UK and France.
And that guy was never pro-soviet/russian, he used to be the chief of the general staff of the Supreme Headquarters, Allied Powers in Europe and behind the idea of a nuke attack on Moscow.

when they pronounced war against Germany, they had huge advantage in troops and war materials as the main German forces were around Poland.

Like Dima said, French army was large enough to deal with the Germans, and some helf from the Britain would make things even look better. German tanks were no match for French ones,, and were fewer in numbers. Combines franco-british airforce considerably outweighed the Luftwaffe, but as it was to show a year later, they lacked a will to fight.

But, why focusing on the outbreak of ww2? France could have, and if she lived to her INTERNATIONAL OBLIGATIONS, as per international treaty, should have beaten the Germans in the time of crisis in Czechoslovakia. Stalin stood by the treaty signed with Czechoslovakia, and was ready, in spite of the French bailing out on their responsiblities, to aid Beneš with first-line troops of the Red Army, but Beneš decided to give in when Czechoslovakia Agrarian Party declared that it will start a civil war if the Soviets were allowed to come in...

GB had no treaty with Czechoslovakia, but if Chamberlain held his ground and ran some other policy instead the appeasement one, he might have inflicted pressure enough of France to hold to her international treaties.

Those are the main reasons why I am against the date of 23 August being "a Europe-wide Day of Remembrance for the victims of all totalitarian and authoritarian regimes". Undoubtly it is a nice thing to remember the victims of Stalinism alongside those of the Nazis, but the ww2 didn't start because of Stalin-Hitler non-aggression pact, and it was only a tactical move on part of both sides, aimed to buy some time before the inevitable showdown. The much better date would be 29 September, as far as I am concerned.

There are many dates one could put forward. The 7th of december 1941 is another good one since the war really became global with that one. 22 june 1941 could be another good date if one is looking to commemorate victims, as most of the dying was done on eastern soil.

I also enjoyed the World at war series as well. Definitely the best series regarding the war, so much great photography - I especially recall the colour scene from Midway - but add to that all the great interviews from civilians and generals. Its easy to realise the budgets for tv-producitons were huge back in those days, compared to all the crap they produce now for a nickel or two.

Well it has always been a contentious debate as to who could have , should have or might have been able to prevent the ascent of Hitler long before Dima started.  My 2 cents is the Treaty of Versailles itself was the blame, which was basically an act of vengence by the French and English...also the failure of the League of Nations.  America was too divided internally to support it.

Re: War at War...I am really looking forward to my DVD collection from Borders on this series.  It has been shown rarely on U.S. television and I was a bit too young to remember it back in the 70's.   Victory at Sea DVD collection will also be a gem.  I do remember this (American) documentary from the 50's being shown on television here all the way until the early 80's.

Yes you are totally right about the Brit's.   The British are very much into history and documentaries...they take history much more seriously than anyone else it seems.  I admire their dedication to studying the classics, Gibbons on the fall of Rome, etc.  America is decent with the Smithsonian and strong college programs but the Brit's pretty much are the masters.

The thing that will make the world at war series last forever is the interviews. The collection of interviews was a great feat telling the story from all sides, these will remain a historical record in their own right. I watched it when it first came out and have the dvd collection. Its only weakness now is the amount of new information and historical research that is now available that has come out since that date.

Saw this doco on SBS or ABC recently, it was interesting.

Still, i think the Battle of Britain movie was BRILLIANT and is definately still in the TOP TEN war movies of all time (if not top 5), awe shucks, maybe its just THE best.

Pretty much a documentry re-enactment

Certainly a fantastic movie for its time

Highly recommended for all who wants to know EF without Cold War myths:

Episode guide:

http://www.militaryhistory.co.uk/shows/soviet-storm--world-war-ii-in-the-east/episode-guide.html#bottomOfHeader

Star Media’s CEO, Vlad Ryashin, said: “We are very excited about these deals and feel honored to be working with such a prestigious broadcaster as HISTORY. Our new 18-episode docudrama Soviet Storm: WW2 in the East will be presented at MIPCOM. The original docudrama was made in collaboration with Channel One Russia, and it was a huge success with Russian TV viewers. The series uses the latest state-of-the-art technology combining stunning 3D-animation with dramatic live-action reconstruction and historic library footage. Today’s viewer is not so interested in straightforward documentary newsreel, however, which is why we use it with limitations in our project—the main focus being on ‘modern imagery’ that made Soviet Storm: WW2 in the East so special and unique. We believe that it will be very popular internationally. Without any political themes, this docudrama deals, purely and simply, with facts about one of the most bloody wars in history.”

Shame on the U.S. History Channel for not airing this programme.  Soviet Storm is only scheduled to be shown in the U.K.  It's almost as if they want to keep us Americans dumbed-down on purpose and think that the entire war was won and lost at D-Day.  : )

Re:  "Apocalypse The Second World War"  I can not recommend anyone purchase.   Although the colourization and image quality is excellent...  The claim that 50% of footage is new, seems inaccurate.  Maybe they show a 1 or 2 second clips of civilian film footage that is new.  When they show actual military footage it is the same clips shown on every other documentary.  Not only that but they show only 10 seconds of footage on average for each major battle.  Crete was maybe 3 seconds and nothing new.  I do give them credit for the colourization and image quality...but otherwise not worth the expensive price at all.

The book written by Karl Marlantes featured in the film is Matterhorn, a fictional account based on his experience there.

Thanks a lot

A weird thing is that some videos cannot be seen in France. They are censored for inadequate content !

More vids from the same guy's channel that Recondo vid is from. If you check out his channel you'll find plenty more war - related vids.

A couple more from his channel about the Vietnam war.

In Desperate Battle: Normandy 1944
   Brian McKenna,
   1992,
   103 min 30 s

This documentary looks at the events of June 6, 1944, when a combined force of American, British and Canadian troops landed on the beaches of Normandy. The Allied invasion of occupied France was a turning point in the war against Hitler's Germany. From a tactical view, Canada's role was limited; strategically, it was pivotal. Part of the 3-part series The Valour and the Horror.

My opinion: excellent documentary.

53.59 minutes

This video is only in German, so sadly no subtitles, however, it is still quite interesting. A bit historical detailed information on the tank it self and some cool snippets as well. For instance at 14:15, a Tiger drive slowly through a building.

6 Parts. Really interesting video. You get a good view of the German held ridge line at the beach. Tuff area to assault. A killing zone.

Also, I found an additional link to a book on the topic, with a more detailed casualty report, involving;

1st Infantry Division (1346)
29th Infantry Division (1272)
V Corps/First Army Units (1568)
U.S. NAVY/Coast Guard/Royal Navy (539)
Eight Air Force (10)

Grand Total 4700 casualties at Omaha beach, thus not the 3000 as described in most books and movies.:

I found a part one to that MF_Church Thanks!

To imbed a Youtube; when in youtube select SHARE then OPTION select LONG LINK copy and paste using the YOUTUBE button here on a CCS forum posting page. Imbeding them allows you to see at a glace that it is still working link. When they are not working link they usually appear as a blank black screen.

Some of these clips get removed for copyright or owners removing them etc. I updated most of the posts on this thread last night so go back and check the older posts some are gone others added. A full version of Fog of War and a new Commanders at War is up as well. Enjoy, while they are online. Thanks.

USAF Spitfire pilot

This is a short story of a US airman from a photo reconnaissance pilot who crash landed on an airfield in France.

His unit originally flew camera mounted P38's but found they had mechanical trouble at altitude.

They converted to British Spitfires & found they were far superior.

These blokes flew unarmed missions over Germany! Guts effort... The 303 machine guns were removed and extra fuel tanks installed.

A great little story... the pilot who is over 90 and had never seen the film before... its worth it to see the look on the gentlemans face.

A short post war video about Romanian 1st Air Corps in action after 23 August 1944 when the country switched sides and began fighting against Germany; you could see Me-109G, Ju-87 Stuka, Hs-129, He-111, Ju-88, JU-52 in romanian colors. Also, modified Savoia Marchetti 79 and romanian built IAR-80/81 and IAR-39 (biplane) are shown. The IAR-80/81 was sometimes erroneously identified by allied fighters as FW-190.

regards,
m.

Has anyone ever watched that B&W WW1 documentary series with veterans that can be found on Youtube? I found it fascinating. Can post some links if want. Downloading most of them to keep for later years.

Agree Caruso.. World At War set the bar and Laurence Olivier (spelling( as the narrator was the most fabulous ever done to me. So many famous military people were still around.

The one part I recall the most, was when the narrator asked Mark Clark about his Anzio fiasco and it seemed to catch him off guard.. Later on in that same episode? One of Kesselring's generals (I forget who) was on the same episode saying the exact opposite. The funniest episode if that can be said of a documentary like that where human lives are thrown away.

Hey Caruso,

It's titled "The Great War"

youtube

There is the main search page on youtube with 6-7 of them of the 26 episodes made. Made during the 60's, they are a classic to me.

"US_Brake"

There are two documentaries that I have been trying to find unsuccessfully. If anyone is likely to know these doco's it would be you.

1 Is about mainly US POW's from Korea and Vietnam being sent to Russia for interrogation. They spent the rest of their lives in Russia - up to 20m plus years. Also while filming they uncovered WW2 POW's captured by Russians from Concentration camps but were kept in Russia after the War - after death they were buried with Russian civilians buried on top of them. The name of the doco was something like     MIA / KIA

2. Was about Churchill's betrayal of Cossacks captured at the end of the war and handed back to Russia. Some were German Officers serving into these Units. First hand accounts from some survivors mainly the Germans who were handed back to Germany many years later. Pretty sure the title had the word - betrayal in it's name.

Cheers

Good stuff Brake.  I bet there is a treasure trove of old film sitting in archives yet to be digitized.  The Russians probably have the most.  Due to secrecy of the Cold War and strict censorship, I wonder how much the Russians have yet to release to the West.  Maybe the Germans have some kept in private collections too?  The Germans are always paranoid of enabling neo-nazi's and maybe are reluctant to release war footage.

Hi DJ. That Battle Line series is pretty good. Yes, I love to watch obscure films of WW2.

Here is some footage from Kursk.

Just spent 30 minutes watching this video: Berlin July 1945 . Impressive images shot by a US military man of a postwar Berlin with its citizens trying to carry on with their lives in a completely ruined city. There is a lot see in these images.

On episode 7 now, I think its about Stalingrad.

You certainly are reminded of the scale of the East Front in this documentary. It goes into some nice detail on the battles. I have never really read or seen details on the siege of Leningrad so that was very interesting. Over 800 days in a siege. The heartbeat of Leningrad, a metronome broadcast over radio, when its slow it means all clear, faster means danger.

The battleship guns installed around Sevastopol. I went right to Google Maps to find them afterwards, and there they were. German HE-111 torpedo bombers in the Black Sea and Sea of Azov. All very interesting.

The title of the video means the Party of God Brigade against Daesh. They are an arm of Hezbollah who in turn is funded by Iran. It's not so much Iran is trying to take over. More that Iraq is being pushed to Iran through corruption and previous Baathist leadership - Saddam.
