I'd like to be able to play them from time to time, but do not know how to locate the proper CODEC to install.

This codec was shoot dead by Intel/LIGOS years ago and can not be installed on Vista+ OSes. But there are some open-source decoders capable with Indeo format, try FFDShow from xvidvideo.ru .
