For TLD and LSA it is the same -- 128 connection entries.

Note that a 'connection' in this sense is defined as one connection entry in Stratmap.txt, and applies both ways between two maps.  So if you have an entry in the connection list in Stratmap.txt like "0, 1" you have defined both a connection from map 0 to map 1 and also a connection back from map 1 to map 0.  So 128 is enough connections to support an 8 x 8 chess board sort of arrangement of the 64 maps.

Should a hex map be aimed at a specific mod; or should a "universal stratmap" be created which could then be applied to whatever mod you wanted?

A building block for other folks' mods could be kept deliberately plain with the focus on function.

Limited objectives make it far more likely that the task will actually be completed. We all have real world commitments.

Tactical maps are a distraction. For the connections the smallest and plainest tactical maps should be used. 64 blank pieces of grass big enough to mount six entry/ exit VLs and maybe a centre VL each would be perfect.

Systematically code six connections for each hex and let others delete what they don't need in their mods.

The advent of Panthers in the Mist is a distraction as it means that CC:LSA is no longer the latest, greatest and biggest. Unfortunately, it carries with it the threat of wasted effort.

Stwa's TOAW III picture is interesting but Advanced Tactics Gold is more pliable. OK, I confess, was trying to figure out a tie up between the two games.

First decision to make is whether to go for an 8 x 8 grid or a hex of hexes. Either has the potential to be part of something bigger. Start thinking of these 64 hex blocks lying next to each other.

The picture below has too many hexes but it gives you an idea.
