Sapa,

Seelow heights is post-war Russian thing, in WW2 all that area was called differently.
Main problem of first days in that area were arrigation system network - they actually didn't know about heights that time.
They were never taken but outflanked so the Germans retreated.

Those very old war movies are made a lot better than those with the hollywood stars!! They even seem very realistics, but sure, during the 50's in that part of the world, they still had a lot of original material  Smile

I remember reading that Sergio Leone was about to start making a movie about the siege of Leningrad, it never happened because Leone died.

I've always felt that a war movie needs to be accurate but it could have a certain feel, artistry that would make it great. And of course music, Ennio Morricone composed the music to a lot of Leone's films, IMO his type of music would suit a WW 2 film well.

Yea you're right the soviets used their armed forces to make fantastic battle scenes.

The one you mention is great, also the film Waterloo although western was made in Ukraine with the Ukranian army (can you see the similarity between the film styles?). The Polish communists also made some great films via similar method like "The Deluge" some great battle scenes using their armed forces for man power.

No way a computer can reproduce it.
