It's literally a useless waste of time. Just gets lit up by Crocodiles who can spot it for miles. |

Do not manually set targets for AT guns and you should be a lot better off.
Set them to Defend or better: Ambush - You will see they kill tanks very effectively that way and they are able to survive a lot better too. (Well, maybe not Front of Croc, but all other angles) |

True. A not well concealed AT Gun is useless. You can see in many instances, an AT gun gets killed as soons as the game starts (same for the tank, if it starts in LOS of AT gun) if it is so easy to spot and sits wide open. |

The new camouflage function for guns and tanks allows you to hide them almost anywhere.
Quote:
|
11.9.1 Camouflage
A Battle Group that spends an entire turn in control of a map, and which does not attempt to move, will have the ability to “dig in” and create a fortified position (see 14.2 Gullies, Foxholes, and Gun Pits). Tanks and guns have the added advantage of being in Camouflage. White text will appear over the unit indicating that the unit is camouflaged. These units must be set to AMBUSH to enjoy this advantage.
Tanks and guns in Camouflage are assumed to have had time to extensively prepare and disguise their positions with brush, and other natural materials. This gives then the ability to remain hidden much longer than normal. Once a tank or anti-tank moves or fires, their camouflage advantage is gone. The Camouflage option does not guarantee a tank or anti-tank gun will remain hidden, so if you set up a unit on a road, out in the open, or close to enemy infantry it may still be quickly spotted. If properly placed, Camouflaged units may be able to achieve the first shot or more before your opponent has located your position.
Note: In order for a Battle Group to “dig in” it also has to have been the frontline Battle Group for one turn. So if you have a reserve Battle Group that has never been the frontline Battle Group before it will not “dig-in” or be Camouflaged until it becomes the front line Battle Group for one turn or more.

To echo ScnelleMeyer - A unit will always remain unspotted longer, and usually perform more efficiently, if set to Defend than when issued a Fire order. |

Well there you go. In ambush mode, will it fire at all? |

Guns on ambush will fire at close range much like ambushing infantry will. Camouflage is lost after their first round, whether they fired on their own initiative (Ambush/Defend) or were ordered to Fire. |

Ok thanks. What's close range to an AT gun? |

I have found it best to keep the AT gun back so far in the cover that there is hardly any field of vision. It limits the targets but at least the gun lasts longer, many times even to the next round. Not sure in the newer games but in the older ones if the target is covered by a darker green instead of a bright green the target many times has trouble acquiring the AT gun or tank firing on it. |

Have seen the AI has problems killing guns when it has the dark green ring in GtC as well so I think its still there in the newer games. |
