Has anyone checked out Google earth recently? It literally blows my mind. Three weeks after my old computer died taking maps for several proposed mods with it i find myself in COVID 19 lockdown for a proposed 4 weeks and am getting bored. So I've started negotiating a new mod. With the loss of several gigs of textures, maps images and so on I thought I'd start again from scratch. Downloaded the new version of Google Earth to the new computer and started helping myself to imagery.
I see that many European cities have been 3-Derized. Not only has each and every building been 3d rendered but if you zoom in whole cityscapes have been rendered in 3D.
Mind
fucking
blown.
I can't even consider the computer power that drives this free product let alone think of any way that they've created this.
I'm reminded of a quote by the late Aurther C. Clarke "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." We're there!

I use either Google Maps, Earth or Streetview pretty much every week now as part of my job and for internet rabbit holes I go down. 3D views has been around for quite awhile, maybe over 10 years?

Yeah so some places I used to browse did not have 3D for years. I think they did the dense and highly populated areas first, like NYC, and branched out to smaller less populated areas afterwards.

I've been pilfering images off Google Earth for map making.
Made one huge .psd that I can magic wand buildings off while mapping
