Of course, better was not to waste resources and time for referendums. Great shining lights example: Golan Heights. Just grab and tightly hold what you think is yours, and wait for Trump (or Gorbachev), using UN resolutions as toilet paper meantime. Estimated 5,000 Russian soldiers encircled and cut off.  Again, unencrypted cell phone communications intercepted because Russian soldiers were desperate and wanted to say their final goodbyes back home.  They knew their calls would be intercepted but didn't care because about to be captured or killed.

Russia attempted to encircle Ukrainian forces many times but they wouldn't let it happen and retreat.  Ukraine however has been able to encircle Russian forces twice now due to dysfunctional command.

Russian sources said hitting Ukrainian 30 man squads with machine gun fire and they still continue to advance anyways.  Guessing these are special forces with body armor no other way to keep walking after taking MG hits assuming this is true.
