@ Kojusoki,
I like the idea of this type of Mortar Barrage (using a Forward Observer Command Team ... including: one fixed duration barrage per unit) to be indirect fire with varying accuracy related to distance away from target.
Direct fire would cause too many problems with setting up, seeking cover, aiming, seeking cover, setting up ...etc.
I still like the Naval barrages as is though, since it simulates (although compressed time wise) the softening of shore defenses before the seaborne invasion.
Although somewhat unrealistic, in that a player can govern its location of fire, ... there was Naval Support used in this way (aimed at a very specific target) during the invasion.
I think Air Support is OK now too. It's pretty much useless anyway (damage wise). During the invasion, it was probably more up to the pilot to pinpoint targets within a requested area, rather than communication with a Forward Observer on the ground.
The way it is now, it's kind of simulating a pilot's view ... seeing a target and shooting at it, via the Air Support target selection and click. Although targets are made more visible by ground units' LOS "in game".

Hey guys
Lots of interesting opinions here, I'll see what I use in the future. But some thoughts though:
Air strikes: I think they should stay as they are. Not sure about the exact mechanics around CAS, but the main procedure is that a unit (BG) is assigned CAS with an order to both the infantry as well as the planes that they are to attack, let's say; "targets marked by green smoke at Hill 112" (as well as opportunity fire.) My only question to more well-read peps is this: -Didn't the single-seated planes fly in wings of two planes? Or were the wing-man protecting his companion while he strafed the target?
Naval Barrage: Somewhere in a manual, probably the one to CC5, I've read that the naval barrage is portraying "a destroyer close to the shore, giving direct fire support" (or something like that.) The mechanism of pre-landing barrages, the rocket launcher barges and the preliminary bombardment of the RAF and USAAF are not a part of the CC game.
Also it would end the constant wrangling over guns, haltracks, and even in some mods tanks which are all damaged or destroyed by infantry mortars.
Maybe some method could be found not only to increase the amount of barrage fire from 'off board' mortars but of also firing a decent smokescreen. IIRC in the Omaha mod there are observers who can provide a long range smokescreen, possibly something along these lines might be adpted?. I know this would use a team slot, however slots would be freed up by removal of the med/heavy mortars.
I think this is ceratinly a radical idea and probably needs to be refined by discussion, but my first reaction to it was favourable. I can certainly see situations or reasons why mortars would maybe be part of a BG. However I think this is a great starting point for a discussion that just might bring about a real step in the development of this great game.

PS if theres an idea of the year award, I'll nominate Kojusoki:)
I can only agree on the 'idea of the year award', you have given us a great idea here kojusoki; -Allowing us to think outside the box! My first idea would be a forward observer team, I'm looking into 150mm arty (and 'humongous' naval barrages) already, easy to add 81mm mortars (and maybe 105mm arty?) spotters if I get it to work. In my honest opinion, I've been wondering what the med/hvy mortars have been doing that close to the front-line?
And finally, light mortars... Seems like I still don't know what to do!?
My first feeling is to leave the US and Jerry mortars as they are, giving the 2 inch direct fire and look into the accuracy and ammo-load of them all. But to complicate things a bit, what about the US M19 light mortar without the bipod? It was designed for use by airborne units, but was it used in WE in general, or by the airborne divisions during Normandy?
PS. "One step forward, two steps back." -I've been working with the original files of the game, just to upload the patched ones into Excel and start all over. Two months of work down the sewer, but at least I know how to do it now!! D.S
Cheers
