We take a tactical halt and consider our actions. Thus far, we have been successful in meeting our limited primary objectives of capturing the buildings to the bottom edge. Once battle resumes, we can shift more teams into the start line and push towards the enemy command HQ from cover. We have dealt the enemy heavy damage and kept our losses moderate.

Allies Germans
Soldiers 39 39
Losses 10 24
Remaining 29 15

4 hrs rest and we'll resume our fight.

We head back to Oosterbeek in an attempt to force open the LZ. We have the enemy on the run. We have taken light casualties in our previous battle and our momentum should carry us through in this one.

We'll push our Vickers MG team into the Cottage VL, which is contested. Once in place, the platoon of teams to the top half of the map will leap and bound forward till they clear the Farm House VL and the Woods VL, generally extending their line and sweeping in a counter-clockwise motion.

We keep our 6pdr gun team back in the reserve line, since there's only infantry work here. Our left flank will be defensive but will look for opportunities to advance when the enemy has been found and fixed.

We take the Cottage VL without contest. The enemy has left it empty and now we have an excellent vantage point to overlook the Woods VL as well as to cover our right wing advance towards the Farm House VL.

We'll need to take the Farm House to secure our right flank before moving on to the Woods VL.

PostPosted: Thu Sep 30, 2010 2:09 am Post subject: Oosterbeek LZ- Enemy Contact Reply with quote

There's alot to be said for the German commander's choice of bivouac points.

We first encountered the enemy in the Woods VL. And quickly manuvered our gun teams to bring heavy fire to bear while shifting our rifle teams to close with the enemy, taking the Farm House VL on the trot.

Suddenly, it seems that all the German SS teams are concentrated in the same area of Woods VL, with no supporting units at the flank. Our mortar bombs started to zero in quickly on the vicinity and aided by heavy automatic fire from 2 Vickers, 2 Brens, there was alot of suppressive fires converging into the Woods.

It seems we found the enemy resting positions.

We've ran another textbook infantry assault. With automatic guns taking excellent dominant points and driving the infantry elements forward to contact. Once we found the enemy, we fixed their position and continue to push our rifle teams into their flanks, ultimately destroying those who didn't flee in time.

Allies Germans
Soldiers 42 22
Losses 3 13
Remaining 39 9

We reopen the LZ just in time for 4th Brigade to make their drop at 10am.

Back at the beginning of XXX Corps's attack, we find ourselves at Eindhoven Sector. The enemy has organised one of their quick counter attacks, and intends to cut the road to block XXX Corps advance.

They have decided to strike at Schinjndel Op. If we can prevent its loss, XXX Corps is timed to reach Nijmegen Sector before sundown today.

In the previous day's fight, we had taken considerable losses in our over enthusiastic attack to clear the map. However, expecting an enemy imminent attack, we replenish our teams with more firepower.

In this map, we place our teams in positions to ambush the enemy as they move forward. We have a couple of teams on bottom edge to provide enfilade fire to their flanks. We will attempt to squeeze the enemy into a thin wafer along the edge of the town, by placing heavy fires into the sand dunes and having strong infantry presence in the centre of the town.

When the enemy is unable to either advance or retreat, it'll be easier to convince them to surrender.

The enemy BG was a combined armour with Heer and Fallschirm infantry. Unfortunately for them, they weren't very well-coordinated. The Fallschirm rushed ahead of the Heer and were cut down in cul-de-sacs, where we covered from dominant positions.

The Heer infantry cowered behind their armour which were destroyed as they tried to maneuvre in the narrow streets. Finally their attack bogged down and there was no forward impetus anymore.

Once the lull sets in, we turn our forces to the counter attack.

We switch our attention to our right flank where we can move directly and threaten their lines of retreat. As we push our teams forward, we notice the enemy teams breaking off contact to front and centre and trying to pull back. At this point, the enemy commander realises that any further action will only reduce his BG further and calls for a general withdrawal.

We continue where we left off at Nijmegen Bridge, a brutal street level fight.

Having sustained casualties in the earlier skirmish, we req. for 2 more Bazooka teams.

In the previous fight, we had managed to seize control of several areas on the map, which we can improve on. We subsequently place the bulk of our teams in the row of buildings to the bottom map edge. This assault force will push relentlessly upwards.

Another 4 teams have been tasked as a block force, placed in the cluster of buildings in the centre of the map (just above Hunner Park VL).

PostPosted: Wed Oct 06, 2010 7:55 am Post subject: Nijmegen Bridge- Enemy Infiltration Reply with quote

Once the veil of ceasefire rises, we found that the enemy has infiltrated several locations which we hadn't expected the enemy to be in.

The first surprise encounter was a rapid shoot-out between our .30 cal MG against a 8.8cm FlaK and Sturmgrenadr team near the vicinity of the K. Lodewijk plein VL. In the short and sharp exchange, our .30 cal MG destroyed both teams without suffering a single casualty. An excellent fight.

The next encounter was the enemy had moved a Schutzen team into the foxholes ringing the Hunner Park VL and managed to retake that position. They will cut off our blocking force and have to be removed.

A quick sit-rep tells us that the enemy has taken strong positions to oppose our main assault force coming from the bottom of the map. However, up near the block force, there's not much enemy opposition.

We decided to make a quick change in plans and shift the emphasis for assault to the block force. They will now take the initiative and push towards the objective, enemy command HQ, currently covered by MG 42 and Schweres MG. Our erstwhile assault force will instead attempt to occupy the enemy's attentions.

Our assessment was faulty. We had incorrectly assumed only limited opposition, and sent our teams forward too hastily. Here we fed 2 Rifle teams forward to clear the opposite houses, only to find a hidden Flammenwerfer. Both teams were unsuccessful in capturing the Flammenwerfer house.

We relook at our situation in the lower map edge. Here, the fighting seems to have swung in our favour again.

Having extended the line, we have found some space to work along the flank. We send a Rifle team to detour along the left, hook across the street and come in on the enemy teams by the flank and rear.

Once the enemy realise we've cut them off, they immediately down their arms.

PostPosted: Fri Oct 08, 2010 1:14 pm Post subject: Nijmegen Bridge- Final phase and End of Battle Reply with quote

We reconsolidate on the new line and push teams out to take the enemy team in the Hunner Park VL under fire. Converging fires from both directions quickly took its effect on the enemy.

Before the end of battle, we retook Hunner Park and the K. Lodewijk plein VLs.

It was quite a bloody brawl. We've pushed 5 yards more at relatively moderate loss, losing 2 Rifle teams. On hindsight, we've done some really heavy damage as well.

Allies Germans
Soldiers 29 52
Losses 17 39
Remaining 12 13

We take a 4 hr breather, maybe XXX Corps will reach in time for the final goal-line mouth scramble.

Gun fire erupts at the Arnhem West Approach once more. The 7hrs ceasefire is up.

During our lull, we managed to call up additional teams of 1 Recon and 1 PIAT.

The screen shows our starting positions, putting the new teams into the line. We'll try to use the Vickers to slow the enemy advance while we maneuvre the infantry teams (Recon and Rifle) along the top of the map.

The enemy's intentions are pretty straightforward. They seek to overwhelm our MG team by varying his assault teams, coming from different directions.

Here, a MG 42 and Aufklarer team breaks from cover. They don't last long in the open.

Finally, they manage to throw a Granatwerfer team into the mix and lob a couple of mortar bombs to suppress our Vickers and their movement was less harried.

Extending our line, they manage to push a Schutzen team in a flanking position. Our Vickers MG has limited traverse fire beyond that line of house. It's time to move them back to take a new line.

At the same time, the enemy AC makes an appearance and makes it pretty difficult for our Vickers to move away without taking heavy fire.
