Ok i'm not sure what region we are looking at... but I will try to analyze the photo a bit...

It seems lik there is some sort of army barracks In the upper left corner. A bit more to the south east of the map there is clearly a hill visible. It is defenitly a man made hill. maybe there was some sort of defensive structure on top of it. some more to the south is something i believe to be a Large Land House or something like it.

Looking at the photo in general... it doesnt show the bridge clearly. judging from its position i would guess that this was some sort of location used for an amphibious assault.

Judging at the number of boats i would say that this is a sort of touristic area in the present days...
I can't make much more of this. my first hunch would be maybe France or Itally or FYR

Cheers Buck

My observations:

The complex in the top left corner of the photo (it could be North East, but I would not put rotating the image past Mafi ;) ) could be, as Buck suggests, a Barracks, but it could also be a govenmental compound or university. There is a garden with what could be a chapel to the east and then a sports or parade field farther east. Odd dark patch/pitch at the top of it. No obvious football markings to gain scale from.

The hill to the south does indeed look man-made and is a preserved site. The tracings amongst the large trees suggests an old hill fort.

What Buck calls a Large Land House also has the outline of an old castle (with more modern sturctures north of it). Is the round object a silo or a bailey?

Up by the bridge, which has very old style pier protection is another old, preserved fortification. The sturcture below it could be another chapel. The two rows of grey (slate?) roofed buildings look like a barracks with a central parade field, though could be apartments today.

To the south, at what appears to be the mouth of the waterway is another complex that once could have been yet another fortification, but now screams "Resort!". Note the breakwaters and small structures on the center beach.

The boats on the river are small in comparison to those at the dock on the left side. While the is a lot of traffic on the water, scale suggests most are pleasure craft rather than shipping and transport.

The Google mosaic trasitions the water color, but what is notable is the lack of beach on the larger body of water and lack of a beachfront road or highway along the water front; only farm access tracks.

The port authority area south of the bridge shows several medium sized commercial ships tied up to the quay.

Everything suggests that this area has been heavily defended through many centuries.

Okay, here are the first hints:

- it is not WW2/WW1 and it is not American Civil War,
- the bridge and nearly all the buildings were not there during the battle, and the road was a minor pathway.
- What you probably identify are superstructures made after the battle or during modern times. Only one building from the time before the battle survived until today.

I hope this couple of hints will not make it too easy.

Good luck
Mafi

PS: @Mooxe: would it be possible to add a picture as a hint?

Wild guess: Waterloo?

No, never mind. Can't be Waterloo.

Could it be the site of a battle between the French and Germans in 1870?

It appears to have a European feel to it. The area looks fairly green that suggests more northern than southern. It appears the river is flowing south, which in fact greatly limits the choices. From the clue it suggests we are looking for an event 300 or more years ago. I wanted to say it was in Brittany but I could not find it. I can't make out the style of buildings. Presumably the building let standing is close to the bridge and would have been placed there to control the mouth of the river.

Hello Sirs,

so quiet here? Too difficult. Okay. Some minor hints:

- the picture is North-up.
- the "blue" area you are seeing is indeed water. But it is no river, no wide ocean, no lake. Water flow direction (if there is one) is depending on the position of the moon. A little bit.
- Yes, it is Europe. Anything else would be too difficult for you to locate.

Next week I will give another hint if really needed.

Good luck
Mafi

Yes hard one. Can we tell from the pic what side of the road people drive on?

From Mafi's hint thw water body may be some sort of resevoir with a dam or something.

Hi Mooxe,

- NO lake,
- no WIDE ocean,
- no RIVER
- something similiar (4 possible locations in Europe)

I think someone will locate it within 2 hours.

Cheers

Hi Buck,

yes, you are right: left (East) "is Sønderborg in Denmark".
West of the water is the battlefield of Dybbøl (1864), later the Prussians constructed the new fortress over the old Danish walls. These "three man made hills" on the pict are the inner circle of this Prussian fortress of Sønderborg.

See:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_War_of_Schleswig
http://www.1864.dk/tysk-index.htm
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sønderborg_Castle

Congrats!
I think the next pict will be also really hard.

Cheers and have a nice weekend
Mafi
