  Player's News: CC5 Karelia 2 Review
Posted on Wed Sep 06, 2006 8:15 am by webmaster
Close Combat 5 Invasion Normandy In early June, 1944 the Russians commenced with a powerful counter-offensive that included Guards Brigades and elite Soviet infantry. This offensive was meant to coincide with Operation Overlord. The offensive broke the Finnish defence at Valkesaari and advanced all the way to Viipuri. Only a short battle took place that yielded the capital city to the Russians. One of the most notable battles took place around the Tali - Ihantala area. The Finns succeeded in halting the Russians here by staging a staunch defensive. The Russian were stopped at the North West part of the Isthmus along the river Vuoski. Finland sued for peace on June 21st but was rejected by the Russians. Subsequently, Finland vowed to fight to the end. The Russians were ordered to break the Finnish defensive line and keep on fighting. Sapa's mod, Karelia 2 covers this battle.

Karelia 2 was primarily aimed at single player campaigners, playing as the Finns. Sapa has concieved some good ideas to make the AI tougher. The first one being a more rigid strategic map. You can view our Strat Map guide which will come in handy planning your moves. Map names, values, road network and supply deports are all included. The road network is structured in such a way that the AI must follow certain paths to attack. The other component to helping the AI was to group VLs closer together. Although this is a good concept, many of the maps have large portions with no VLs which in turn have little or commanding features. Only very wide flanking moves would ever make use of some of these areas.

Keeping true to history, the Russians outnumber the Finns in every way. Heavy KV-1s, T-34s and even some Churchills are divided across 3 armoured battlegroups. Dont be suprised when you see all the MGs and main guns firing. It creates quite a firefight. Russian infantry have expanded teams also that go beyond the standard 7 man section. The Finns have a small number of T-34s and T-26s in thier 2 armour battlegroups. They do have a moderate amount of ATGs, and the maps have many bunkers and hiding spots in order to make best use of them. Russians will also dominate with thier swelled ranks of 120mm Mortars and wide assortment of ATGs. Cleary the Russians are meant to win, but the real test is obsorbing the Russian onslaught while playing the Finns. Many of the vehicle graphics have been redone by Russ109. The tanks look very nice, and are highly detailed, but a bit dark. Airstikes will consist of Blenhiem's, JU-87 Stukas and IL-2 Sturmoviks. All aircraft carry a standard payload of 500lb bombs. Have a look at our airstrike guide.

Southern_Lands 44 maps are highly detailed. Each maps has realistic looking villages, streambeds, wrecks and forests. Some maps have large water obstacles effectively cutting the maps into sections. The obstacles do make some very difficult bottlenecks for the Russians to fight through. Bridges and small causeways will create natural battle zones. The thick forests are hard for the heavy tanks to get through. There are some very interesting buildings on some maps. The church at St. Johannes is one. Its one of the larger churches you will see in any CC5 mod. It also provides good 4 story LOS. The lighthouse at Kyskyla is another unique feature. Its adds scenery to the map but overall is a useless feature. A 2 point VL was inserted on it. The lighthouse is surrounded by deep water, the only way to capture it is possibly by a morale collapse. If you play with morale off, only endless direct and indirect fire will ever clear the tiny island. Kyskyla also has one of the narrowist bottlenecks. A knocked out tank could easily cause frustration in crossing it. One of the more unassuming features of the maps are all the sheds Dima owns. In all, Dima has been granted 5 sheds on various maps. Mats (sapa) and Shane (Southern_Land) also have a few places of thier own.

Karelia 2 is one of the few CC5 mods which boast a new strategic map, all new units and 44 original maps. This is definetly a mod to try out. For more info on this mod please visit our Screenshot Gallery and our Karelia 2 Forum. You can download the mod in our Karelia 2 Download section which will also provide a French and English installation tutorial. Enjoy the mod!

**************************************************************

Bon amusement!

I seemed wrong when I was writing it, but I was having trouble finding the real information. I have changed it now, hopefully to the correct version of the battle. Thanks for letting me know!
