First of all i can't tell you what location this is but here is a shortlist of what I believe to see on this one:
First of al there are 6 oval shape's on the photo from the top left to the bottom right. Suggesting that this might be some sort of defence line.
In the south there seems to be some sort of greenzone. with some small streams.
In the centre there is a black patch just north of one of the oval shapes. it looks to me something was bombarded or exploded on the location. Maybe some fuel truck's or a military collumn.
If I would have to take a guess i would say this might be afghanistan or Iraq.
Know mafi's choice of aerials. he always took photo's of battle fields where germans where involved.
He also stated in his last post that the next challenge would be very hard to find.
At the moment my feeling tells me we might be looking at the location where german armed forces orderd an airstrike on 2 taliban captured Fuel Trucks.

perfectly, you made it! Congratulations!
Yes, south-western defence perimeter of Tobruk (with the remaining parts of the "British boxes" ?), where Rommel made his first (unsuccessfull) attack agianst Tobruk.

I too, first looked over Afganistan and even parts of the Sinai. A few weeks ago I was looking for a good area for a Tobruk challenge. I was ready to select a portion farther to the east where the hard outlines of the anti tank ditches and trench lines still exist, but thought it might be too easy.
There was something about the left side of the positions in your challenge that kept niggeling in the back of my mind..... turning north.... where have I seen that before..... something familiar about that area. I looked around Tobruk and got it within a few minutes.
I'm not sure, but I believe that the area in the challenge photo is just a few kilometres west of where the Germans threw the weight of the armored attack. These positions must have received a tremedous amount of suppressive fires in order to mask the attack coming around from the south and then up through the British lines in a breakthrough attempt.
This line was later abandoned during the second assault in 1942 - The Siege of Tobruk. |
