Re: Terrain Challenge #57 (Score: 1) by kvido on Wed Apr 04, 2012 2:31 pm (User Info | Send a Message) | this crossroad is quite unique to be recognized - for Prague native :). Due to construction of a new highway it looks quite different from the situation in 1942 You can see the difference on this page:
http://www.ceskatelevize.cz/porady/10350893065-heydrich-konecne-reseni/5196-misto-atentatu/
it clearly shows the difference between than and present. Finaly, small statute has been placed nearby in order to remember heroes who killed Heydrich:
http://www.praha.eu/jnp/cz/home/budoucnost_historie/praha_historicka/pomnik_pripominajici_atentat_zdobi_prahu.htm
this May we will celebrate 70 years from this unique operation, please give a small memory to all, who gave their lives in order to eliminate such creature as Heidrich. |

I would of never got that. And i though some larger battle happened here because of the crossroads.
Too bad the memorial is so small and difficult to access. Hopefully there's a bigger memorial near the church where the assassins and other partisans died. |

PS: Oh well, I can understand how a Prague native would recognize this location. But what are the chances that this exact location would be posted, and there would just happen to be a local online at the time who would recognize it? |

??Operation Anthropoid was the code name for the assassination attempt on SS-Obergruppenführer and General der Polizei Reinhard Heydrich, the Nazi Germany Deputy Reichsprotektor of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. The operation was carried out in Prague on 27 May 1942 after having been prepared by the British Special Operations Executive with the approval of the Czechoslovak government-in-exile. Although only wounded in the attack, Heydrich died from his injuries on 4 June 1942. His death led to a wave of vicious reprisals, including the destruction of villages and killing of civilians, by German troops. |
