From Jan 21 to Jan 39, 1945 the Lincoln & Welland Regiment of the Canadian army fought a garrison of German paratroopers for possesion of this small ferry slip (Kapelsche Veer) on the River Maas. (The slip has since filled in). Despite a heavy preliminary artillery bombardment a canoe-borne water assault and dive-bombing by Spitfires, the Canadians suffered nearly 300 casualties before finally subduing the defenders. |
